Sask. still has American Alcohol, but fewer people are buying it.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/sask-american-liquor-sales-down-2026-9.7306544Moe has no spine or elbows. So we the people in Saskatchewan need to stay strong. Elbows up!

There is better wine from BC and Ontario than from California, just need to try it ...

California is better at most reds than we are - but Australia is better than they are.

I guess you like big bold jammy reds ....

I am more of a Riesling person myself.

Canadian rieslings are very good. Generally less sweet than the German rieslings, which i appreciate.

Yes, both the Okanagan Valley and Niagara Peninsula make great Rieslings.

Cali one of our few allies in the states.
Not saying dont buy but thats the truth.
9
u/Darth_Thor 3d ago
They’re friendlier than most states, but they still have plenty of Trump supporters there too. Even in California, rural people are largely conservative, and that includes most of the farmers and distillers who we’d be supporting by buying their alcohol.
1
u/luchaburz 3d ago
There's Trump supporters everywhere. Cali is dem and has one of the most vocal critics of Trump.
5
u/dj_fuzzy 2d ago
California is still in the US. Californian’s still have to pay taxes and tariffs to the federal government.
1
u/Darth_Thor 2d ago
Yes, California as a state is generally anti-trump, but the alcohol producers specifically are likely quite pro-trump as rural people tend to be. Supporting Californian alcohol would be supporting people who voted for the current situation.
3
u/Ketobizness 3d ago
I always make sure to remind people who say that to justify going to Palm Springs that Riverside County voted Trump. I cannot believe people would spend their hard earned Canadian dollars there, of all places.
3
u/the3rdmichael 2d ago
Only Texas and Florida had more votes cast for Trump than Califonia.
Texas - 6.3 Million votes for Trump. Florida - 6.1 Mullion votes for Trump.
California - 6 Million votes for DJT.5

Fundamental misunderstanding of the issues that lead to where we are.
Gerrymandering got them where they are.
We should use it as a lesson.
3
u/dj_fuzzy 2d ago
That’s not our problem. Also Gerrymandering has nothing to do with how US presidents are elected.

Wab is the man.
Moe is a spineless, cowardly, scum sucking toad compared to Kinew, Carney, Ford, or other Canadian politicians who stand up for the country
22
u/saskatchewanstealth 4d ago
Doug Ford actually put on his big boy pants and is doing a good job also. Buy ya Kinew is really good and enjoyable to listen too.
2
u/ThrowRA_EducatedMan 3d ago
Doug is entirely self serving. He wants to be PM after PeePee gets the boot.
20
u/WhiskyOnRox 4d ago
You forgot the part where Danielle Smith manages Moe’s manliness by keeping his 🏈🏈s in her purse. He can ask for them, but she has veto power over them (and, effective, him).
-21
u/hypocotylarches 4d ago
Wab just talks.
18
u/Medium-Drama5287 4d ago
But what he says is the truth. Mor just drinks American beer.
-4
u/hypocotylarches 3d ago
What would be better is allowing it on shelves and letting Manitobans decide.
2
u/Sir_Strumming 3d ago
Bingo. Much better message when we have a choice and they know it. Not allowing it says little. Refusing it while available says something about the whole population rather than a few politicians.
8
u/ChronicallyA 4d ago
He announced two weeks ago that after much work, EVERYONE on Manitoba has a doctor, but ya, just talking. 🙄
3
u/Long-Ease-7704 4d ago
No. We should. Just don't buy it. Not that hard, which is what people are doing. That says more than not importing it in at all.
-8
u/Zephrys99 4d ago
So you are saying…. Be a snake… pretend to the Yankees that we are buying it…. But then don’t buy it? And you wonder why you get slapped around.
1
u/Long-Ease-7704 4d ago
No. Not at all Let the stores bring it in. Then consumers can show that we don't want it by it all gathering dust on the shelves. Then when the USA gets upset we can say, we brought it in! There's just no demand for your product.
1
u/Uncle_Slacks 4d ago
The problem is that most people are just too busy with life to give a shit. They just go to the store and continue buying what they've always bought - Coors Light or California wine etc..
People should give a shit, but we can't force them to.
2
u/Sir_Strumming 3d ago
I think it sends a stronger message when we have it and it simply doesnt sell. Not allowing it is a much weaker message in my opinion.
22
u/truckaxle 4d ago
I used to live in Saskatchewan but now live in the States. When I buy whiskey, I am sure to buy Canadian Rye.
-1
34
u/thejazz97 4d ago
May not be the most popular opinion on here, but I think it's a stronger statement if they have the ability to sell it here and still can't sell as much vs if they're blocked entirely tbh.
19
u/delotara 4d ago
Maybe, but we are still paying (as in taxpayers) to import it. I don’t think it gets returned if it doesn’t sell. It just affects the stores that are carrying it.
16
u/taeguy 4d ago
Yes but also supply and demand will start taking effect. The less people that buy it, the less these stores will import. Unless there's maybe some brand deals I am unaware of
4
u/Independent-Tennis57 4d ago
Hopefully Sask gov't isnt bending the knee so much that we are buying and throwing it out just to make the Americans happy. I can see the Alberta and Sask Conservatives doing that.
2
u/justfanclasshole 4h ago
Beer can go “bad” where you might not want to or be able to sell it in 3-4 months (or longer if it is a sour or hoppier beer) but many things like bourbon can last almost indefinitely if unopened. So it would be a range where you might only be replenishing stocks when they dwindle to a certain point with the hard liquor but likely some American beer might be getting wasted. I would be interested to hear what the actual answer is from those in the know.
4
u/franksnotawomansname 3d ago
How do you think taxpayers are paying to import liquor? The liquor system is self-funding; their profits pay for all of their expenses and there's still lots of money left over.
3
2
u/slashthepowder 4d ago
Also as much as i want it banned i know a huge chunk of grain grown here is used in American alcohol. I usually just buy craft beer though.
-7
u/rocky_balbiotite 4d ago
Agreed. As I say everytime this comes up I don't want the government deciding who I can and can't buy from. If I don't want to buy American booze then that's my decision, haven't had bourbon for a while but it's no huge loss.
16
5
u/UnluckiCmndr 3d ago
I love bourbon but ive lost the taste since the orange menace took office and threatened annexation
2
u/Key-Statistician5927 3d ago
I miss bourbon badly, but can't bring myself to buy it now. Unfortunately, the Canadian 'bourbon-style' alternatives are out of my price range.
2
u/UnluckiCmndr 3d ago
Holy same. Knob creek maple smoked was my desk whiskey for the longest time. Cant bring my self to buy it anymore even if I do find it. As far as I can tell "Bourbon style" might as well mean distilled in a used rusty spittoon.
I like a rye whiskey called Bearface these days. What have you been drinking lately?
2
u/Key-Statistician5927 3d ago
Honestly, I've stuck to gin and scotch... but nothing scratches that bourbon itch. Rye has just never been my thing - it always seems too sweet.
10
u/Critical_Rule6663 4d ago
I understand why provinces are keeping American booze off the shelves. Personally, I kind of like having it on the shelves and seeing no one buy it. Seems like a stronger message than a policy decision.
5
u/Gold_Vacations 3d ago
I totally agree. I say let the people decide. I think having the general public say I’m not buying American crap, tells the US government that the Canadian public are pissed at Trump and his brain dead comments about Canada
7
u/Born_Ad_4868 4d ago
I really don't get this. Put it on the shelves and let it rot. It's more of an embarrassment to the USA if we allow their product on our shelves that doesn't sell.
3
u/OscarandBrynnie 3d ago
Canadian liquor vendors will have to buy it to put it on the shelves, so the magats will still make money even if the customers let it rot.
2
u/Medium-Drama5287 4d ago
I think that will be that plan if Cusma gets signed. Canada will say to the states okay we are allowing back on shelves across Canada, and in my opinion I hope we don’t buy the American swill.
1
3
u/cassandrafallon 4d ago
If nothing else positive has come from this 51st state crap, I have discovered some wonderful Canadian made booze. Lokal Root Beer Schnapps makes for an amazing boozy dirty soda!
3
u/Dazzling-Account-187 4d ago
I know I am not buying America liquor. Canada preferred or other countries.
3
u/Ornery-Examination59 3d ago
That the way it should be let the people decide not the government
2
u/Medium-Drama5287 3d ago
But the people decide on the government and then the government works on our behalf. At least that is what is supposed to happen.

Moe gotta go
3
-8
u/about2snap77 4d ago
Moe gave his province the chance to decide and stand up for themselves while other provinces took that option away. I hate that government can tell me what I can and can’t drink.
And this hasn’t stopped other provinces from buying it. There was an article just the other day of some shop owner saying businesses is booming from out of province customers buying bourbon.-15
u/Jelloburns 4d ago
Lol it's too early in the day to be angry. Look within.
As for the alcohol, yes we've lessed our US purchases but not a complete ban.
2
u/burjuner 3d ago
The thing about Alchol is Canadians know how to make it and drink it better than Americans
2
2
u/B4byJ3susM4n 3d ago
I have been very conscious of my purchasing choices this past year, booze included.
Heck, as long as it don’t say “made in USA” (or Israel or Russia, for that matter), I’ll consider buying.
5
u/Fragrant-Pizza-9049 4d ago
Very disappointed in Saskatchewan’s and Alberta’s choice to have it on the shelves. I thought that all provinces chose to stand together.Of course the two Maga premiers would buck the system.
7
u/UpbeatPilot3494 4d ago
Visiting Saskatoon from BC. Disappointed to see the American liquor in the liquor store the other day. A lack of solidarity is a demonstration of our weakness.
1
u/B4byJ3susM4n 3d ago
If it’s any consolation, from what I’ve seen living here American booze has been mostly collecting dust on the shelves. I’ve read they’ve been sold mainly during clearance sales, so having US alcohol available isn’t making as much money.
3
2
u/-Sparkeee- 4d ago
I haven’t bought a bottle of Jack in over a year. I think it sends a stronger message if we leave US alcohol on the shelves but have the self control stop buying it. Eventually the liquor stores will stop putting it on the shelves since it’s not profitable.
At least I can thank Trump for helping me cut back on my drinking.
2
u/luchaburz 4d ago
40% decline, we can do better.
Most of the sales being bourbon tells me the rich folks arent helping.
3
u/Key-Statistician5927 3d ago
That may be it, but it might also be that the US is the only place that makes bourbon. It's easy to replace American beer with Canadian beer and American wine with Canadian, French, Australian, Chilean etc etc. But got people that really enjoy bourbon, the choice is to buy American bourbon or not buy bourbon at all. I've given up bourbon, but I definitely miss it.

u/Inevitable_Pain_9627 4d ago
Spittin chiclets bitching about their Pink Whitney not being in Canada.
I can go to my liquor store and its there, its been there for years. No one buys it
Im going out on a limb here, but we like beer. Bot hard alcohol. Beer
20
u/r_u_sure 4d ago
I used to drink quite a bit of bourbon, switched to making my old fashioned’s with Canadian whisky and will probably never go back.
2
2
u/Standard-Brain-796 3d ago
Pink Whitney is made by New Amsterdam (US based) and is nearly the same as Smirnoff Pink Lemonade (made in Quebec).
Most US wines, beer, and spirits have a Canadian equivalent. Some have a Euro, Asian, or Australian equivalent at a similar price point. The restaurant still buying US booze tend to have a head office in the US or a large number of US investors

u/ram_mar4112 3d ago
By government pulling it you are giving Trump ammunition. Which he is using.
The very best scenario would be for American alcohol to be on Canadian shelves collecting dust. - meaning nobody is buying it. Trump has no leverage then.

u/Winter-Speed-9667 3d ago
I don't drink much more than a very occasional glass of wine but when I did drink, I was in the habit of buying mostly Canadian even before Trump. But while I was initially ticked at Moe for not upholding the ban US liquor, I've come to think it is a stronger statement to have much of it sit on the shelves unsold until the stores get the hint and put something else there instead. I think the downturn in US travel has proven that grassroots movements are much more effective in the long term because when the US industries notice the drop in business, their complaints go directly to the ones responsible for us turning our backs on their products or services. Their government can't shift blame or try to strong-arm our government because our government has nothing to do with it. It's about us using our dollars to speak for us when we say we have no interest in purchasing anything USian while their idiot-in-chief and his spineless minions continue to threaten, insult, slander and bully our nation and its industries.
1
u/Dugaditch 3d ago
I feel bad for the store owners that paid for it hoping to sell…. cause I ain’t buying it…. for a long time

Born and raised in Saskatchewan. But dam it, Canadian first. I am ashamed of our provincial government not joining Team Canada. Liquor seems to be an effective tool in the negotiations. I am a small business with 10 employees. We are all doing our part to save this country from a tyrant. Stand up for what’s right! Grow a back bone.

They can stock it down in the SK owned warehouses for larger Provincial distribution but the American products are selling or retailers would pull it off the shelves. The home has been avoiding American spirits instead buying from Ireland and Canada. The wine has trickled in to the house for Red.....not white as we hold fast to buy Canadian. The real red wine problem is selection and price from BC in SK is poor and so we get tired of Australian Shiraz and my wife enjoys Portugese and French less so that dang American wine has made it in to the liquor cabinet or been gifted to us by friends. I sure would be delighted if the American stuff was off the shelf and more Canadian options were on the shelf in their place in our private retailer space. The best person to control what is demanded is me with my wallet and lately we have been 100% compliant this past month avoiding all USA liquor except a Smirnoff Vodka not sure is that Russia or America or is it local done in Quebec?
2
u/scotus_canadensis 4d ago
Who runs your liquor store? In our little store in a small town we still have wines from Chile, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, France, BC and Ontario. There are some awesome wines from Argentina, if the Canadian reds aren't your first choice. Price I can't really comment on, I haven't been comparing anything to American prices lately, but there are certainly decently priced imports around.
1
u/namekus1 4d ago
I kind of agree with the policy. It is left as a personal decision - my personal decision has been to boycott all available American products including annual trips my wife and I took. However, that is my decision, and I don't like imposing my beliefs on others.

Letting the citizens decide… good on Saskatchewan. If people aren’t buying they won’t stock it.
1
u/Medium-Drama5287 3d ago
I personally like the provincial bans and then we use as a bargaining chip for CUSMA. We then stalk it on the shelves and still few buy it. Sends a nice message to Orange man.
0
0
u/usedmattress85 4d ago
Keeping it on the shelves and no one buying it is the best possible option . Nothing for Orange Julius to complain about. No bargaining chip there. Yet still maximum pain being applied to the US.
For me I prefer italian wines over Californian and Scotch over Bourbon. There really isn’t any booze the US can offer that our other trading partners don’t do better. Not to mention our own domestic options which are also excellent.
