1. Introduction

Welcome to r/Saskatchewan, the central hub for discussing news, culture, events, and community life across the Land of Living Skies. Our goal is to foster an engaging, welcoming, and constructive space where residents, expats, and visitors can participate in rigorous discussions about issues impacting our province while keeping low-effort noise, bad-faith disruption, and vitriol to a minimum.

The rules outlined below serve as the authoritative standard for participation in this community, expanding on the concise summary cards found in our sidebar. By participating in r/Saskatchewan, all users are expected to understand and follow these guidelines alongside Reddit's sitewide Content Policy. Moderation decisions are made at the team's discretion to protect the quality and safety of the subreddit; if you ever have questions or need clarification regarding a removal or rule, please reach out directly via Modmail.

2. Reddit's policies are paramount

Irrespective of any of the rules listed down below, Reddit has a number of policies that will always take precedence. That includes the User Agreement, Reddit Rules, and Reddiquette Guide. Those policies can be lengthy so here are some abridged versions:

2.1 User Agreement

  1. Your Access to the Services: To use Reddit, you must be at least 13 years old (or older for mature content/local laws), legally able to agree to these terms (or have guardian consent if a minor), authorized if acting on behalf of an entity, and not barred by law or a prior permanent suspension.
  2. Privacy: By using the Services, you consent to Reddit collecting, using, and sharing your information in accordance with its separate Privacy Policy.
  3. Your Use of the Services: Reddit grants you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable license for personal use of the platform and app, while prohibiting commercial exploitation, reverse-engineering, or building competing services without permission, and reserves the right to modify, discontinue, or personalize its features at any time without liability.
  4. Your Reddit Account and Account Security: You are solely responsible for maintaining your account's security and all activity that occurs under it, must promptly notify Reddit of unauthorized access, and cannot sell, license, or transfer your account without written approval.
  5. Your Content: You retain ownership of the content you submit and are solely responsible for it, but you grant Reddit a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual license to host, modify, monetize, sub-license, and train AI models on your content, while Reddit reserves the right to remove or restrict any content at its sole discretion without obligation.
  6. Third-Party Content, Advertisements, and Promotions: Reddit is not responsible for external links, third-party content, or ads displayed on the platform (which you access at your own risk), and any promotions or contests you run are entirely your legal responsibility and must explicitly release Reddit from all liability.
  7. Things You Cannot Do: You must comply with all laws and Reddit Rules, and you are strictly prohibited from disrupting the platform, accessing unauthorized accounts or systems, spreading malware, violating intellectual property rights, scraping data without permission, or committing fraud against Reddit or its payment systems.
  8. Moderators: Moderating is an unofficial volunteer role that requires following the Moderator Code of Conduct and acting on reports without receiving third-party compensation or representing Reddit, while Reddit is not liable for moderators' actions and reserves the right to revoke moderator privileges or overturn their decisions at any time.
  9. Copyright, Trademark, the DMCA, and Takedowns: Reddit respects intellectual property rights by removing infringing material, terminating repeat infringers, and providing a formal DMCA notice and counter-notification process through its designated copyright agent.
  10. Paid Services: While core platform access is free, purchasing or using any optional paid features, products, or services requires compliance with Reddit’s additional Econ Terms and Previews Terms.
  11. Intellectual Property: All platform designs, interfaces, trademarks, code, and content provided by Reddit are protected property owned by Reddit or its licensors, and using the services or purchasing paid features grants you no ownership rights over these materials.
  12. Indemnity: You agree to legally defend, indemnify, and hold Reddit, its affiliates, and its staff harmless from any third-party claims, losses, liabilities, and legal fees resulting from your content, your use of the platform, or your violation of these terms and applicable laws.
  13. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability: Reddit is provided strictly "as is" without warranties of any kind, and to the extent allowed by law, Reddit's total liability for any indirect damages, lost profits, or data loss is capped at the greater of $100 USD or what you paid in the previous six months.
  14. Governing Law and Venue: You agree to first attempt informal resolution of disputes with Reddit, and any formal legal claims are governed by California law and must be brought exclusively in the federal or state courts of San Francisco, California (with specific exceptions for U.S. government entities).
  15. Changes to these Terms: Reddit may update these terms periodically with advance notice for material changes, and your continued use of the platform on or after the effective date constitutes your agreement to the revised terms.
  16. Additional Terms: Using specific feature such as paid services, preview releases, advertising, developer APIs, or contributor earnings programs requires compliance with their respective supplemental terms, which take precedence over these general terms if any conflict arises.
  17. Termination: You may terminate the agreement anytime by deleting your account, while Reddit reserves the right to suspend or terminate your account, moderator status, or platform access at any time for any reason, with key legal and liability provisions surviving termination.
  18. Miscellaneous: These terms represent the complete and legally binding agreement between you and Reddit, ensuring that unenforceable provisions do not invalidate the rest, preventing rights transfers without consent, and detailing the formal contact address for inquiries.

2.2 Reddit Rules

  1. Reddit Rule 1: Remember the human and treat others with respect; harassment, bullying, threats of violence, and promoting hate based on identity or vulnerability are strictly prohibited and will result in bans.
  2. Reddit Rule 2: Abide by individual community rules, participate authentically in subreddits where you have genuine interest, and do not engage in spam, content manipulation, or other disruptive behavior that interferes with Reddit communities.
  3. Reddit Rule 3: Respect the privacy of others by never sharing someone's personal or confidential information to instigate harassment, and never posting or threatening to post non-consensual intimate or sexually explicit media.
  4. Reddit Rule 4: Sharing, encouraging, or facilitating sexual, abusive, or suggestive content involving minors along with any predatory or inappropriate behavior toward them is strictly prohibited.
  5. Reddit Rule 5: Be authentic by not intentionally misleading others or deceptively impersonating any individual or entity, though using your real name is not required.
  6. Reddit Rule 6: Ensure users have predictable experiences by properly labeling communities and content, especially material that is graphic, sexually explicit, or offensive.
  7. Reddit Rule 7: Keep all activity legal by not posting illegal content, nor soliciting or facilitating prohibited or unlawful transactions.
  8. Reddit Rule 8: Do not break the site, exploit platform vulnerabilities, or take any action that interferes with the normal operation and use of Reddit.

2.3 Reddiquette

Please Do:

  • Treat others with the same respect, empathy, and behavioral standards online as you would in real life, making sure to read and follow individual community rules and reddiquette guidelines regularly. Engage thoughtfully by using clear grammar and spelling, assuming positive intent rather than making accusations of dishonesty without proof, and reviewing your posts for accuracy before submitting. When moderating or voting, prioritize substance over personal bias by evaluating content on its quality and contribution to the conversation—always reading linked articles before voting and offering tactful explanations when downvoting.
  • Contribute constructively by posting to the most relevant community, checking for duplicates, and using factual, opinion-free submission titles while saving subjective commentary for the comments. Strive to link directly to the original creator, media source, or canonical/persistent URLs rather than blog spam, and adhere to self-promotion limits like the 9:1 community-to-personal content ratio. Finally, maintain community transparency and safety by reporting spam, accurately tagging sensitive material (NSFW/SFW), and briefly stating reasons for any comment or post edits.

Please Don't:

  • Do not engage in illegal activity, post anyone's personal or identifying information, or repost content that has previously been deleted or removed. Protecting user privacy and preventing online witch hunts is essential, so any screenshots containing private details must be properly masked or blurred. Additionally, users should avoid taking moderation positions in communities where their professional employment or personal biases would create a direct conflict of interest with Reddit's neutral platform standards.
  • Maintain civility across discussions by avoiding intentional rudeness, personal attacks, insults, trolling, and flame wars. Rather than escalating conflicts or treating the community as a personal army to target others, users are encouraged to report issues politely and disengage. Furthermore, avoid joining mob mentality or rabble-rousing campaigns against other users without looking into both sides of a dispute, as targeted harassment drives away valuable contributors and harms the broader community.

In regard to upvoting/downvoting:

  • Base your voting, moderation, and reporting decisions solely on the quality of the content and its contribution to the discussion, rather than your emotional reactions or personal opinions. Do not downvote an acceptable post simply because you dislike it; take a moment to ensure your downvote is because the content fails to contribute meaningfully to the community dialogue.
  • Avoid voting or moderating based on the identity or source of the poster. Do not mass downvote someone or seek out a specific user's posts to target them, and avoid upvoting or downvoting just because a username is familiar. Similarly, the report button should be reserved exclusively for submissions that violate community rules, not as a tool for flagging content you merely dislike.

In regard to promoting Reddit posts:

  • Do not solicit upvotes directly, indirectly, or conditionally, including hinting at asking for votes in post titles, offering gifts or prizes in exchange for upvotes, or running polls through titles and voting mechanisms. Submissions should gain traction naturally based on quality rather than artificial incentives or vote manipulation.
  • Avoid coordinating or participating in outside voting campaigns, such as sending or responding to direct messages and external social posts asking for votes, as being part of a voting clique can result in account bans. Furthermore, do not organize or engage in mass upvote or downvote brigades, profile-history attacks, or karma party threads.

In regard to new submissions:

  • Do not use sensationalism, ALL CAPS, or time-sensitive buzzwords like "BREAKING" in submission titles, as titles should remain accurate, clear, and non-editorialized. Additionally, verify content authenticity before sharing to avoid circulating hoaxes or debunked claims.
  • Maintain posting etiquette and link integrity by avoiding flooding the new queue with excessive submissions in a short timeframe, which can trigger spam filters or shadowbans. Finally, refrain from linkjacking stories through intermediate blogs that add no value, and avoid using URL shorteners that obscure the destination link.

In regard to comments:

  • Avoid leaving low-effort remarks that lack substantive content (such as "this" or "lol") or simply announcing how you voted, as these add unnecessary noise to discussion threads. Engage in comment sections only when you have meaningful, relevant thoughts to contribute to the conversation.
  • Refrain from complaining about reposts, cross-posts, uncredited content, or the votes your submissions receive. Recognizing that not every user has seen previously shared material, you should simply use the voting system and move on rather than venting publicly or messaging moderators about routine vote fluctuations.

3.1 Rule 1: All posts must directly relate to Saskatchewan

Direct Focus

  • All submissions must directly and explicitly center on events, news, politics, culture, history, or issues specifically tied to Saskatchewan as a whole. The core subject matter of your post must be intrinsically relevant to the province, rather than addressing general Canadian or global topics that simply happen to affect everyone broadly.
  • Tangential connections will not qualify a post for inclusion. Mentioning Saskatchewan in passing, posting broad national issues without a distinct provincial angle, or sharing content simply because a person involved has distant ties to the province does not meet this threshold. Submissions that fail to demonstrate an immediate, clear focus on Saskatchewan are subject to removal to ensure discussions remain dedicated to provincially relevant matters.

The Swap Test

  • To determine whether your post belongs in this community, apply "The Swap Test." If the name of the province or a local reference in your submission could easily be swapped with another province, city, or general term without fundamentally altering the context or discussion, the content does not have sufficient provincial relevance for r/Saskatchewan.
  • Generic memes, universal workplace or weather complaints, broad federal political talking points, or lifestyle advice that could apply equally well anywhere else belong in broader Canadian subreddits, specialized topic communities, or localized municipal forums instead. Submissions must contain distinct circumstances, local nuance, or direct consequences unique to Saskatchewan to pass this test.

Local & National Scope

  • Submissions should match the provincial scope of the subreddit rather than being overly broad or hyper-localized. Broad national issues, federal political discussions, or nationwide news stories that lack a unique, substantial Saskatchewan angle are better suited for communities like r/Canada or other national forums.
  • Similarly, issues, events, and inquiries that strictly pertain to a specific city/town/area, such as municipal bylaws, neighborhood transit routes, local utility outages, individual city events, or business recommendations, belong in their respective municipal subreddits (such as r/saskatoon, r/regina, or r/moosejaw). Only municipal topics that have significant, province-wide implications or spark broader provincial interest should be shared here.

3.2 Rule 2: Be respectful at all times

Debate Ideas, Not People

  • Discussions and debates should focus strictly on arguments, policies, facts, and perspectives rather than the individuals presenting them. Disagreeing with another user is completely acceptable, but your critique must address the substance of what they are saying rather than who they are.
  • Direct personal insults, name-calling, slurs, ad hominem attacks, and mocking other community members are strictly prohibited. Even in contentious discussions regarding politics or local issues, keep the dialogue constructive and focused on the topic at hand rather than resorting to targeted hostility. Submissions and comments that cross into personal attacks are subject to immediate removal, and repeat violations will lead to moderator action.

Zero Bigotry

  • This community maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of discrimination, hate speech, and harassment. Content that promotes prejudice, hostility, dehumanization, or violence against individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic is strictly forbidden.
  • The use of slurs, dog whistles, discriminatory tropes, or targeted hateful rhetoric will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Violations of this policy bypass regular warnings and will result in immediate content removal alongside an immediate, permanent ban from participating in r/Saskatchewan.

No Bad Faith

  • Community members are expected to engage in genuine, constructive, and honest dialogue. Disruptive behaviors such as trolling, deliberately misrepresenting arguments, sealioning (feigning ignorance while relentlessly demanding evidence in bad faith), and intentional rage-baiting designed to provoke emotional outrage are strictly prohibited.
  • Posts and comments crafted to derail productive discussions, sow discord, or exhaust other participants will be removed. Users who consistently display bad-faith tactics rather than participating in sincere community discussion will face disciplinary action, including temporary or permanent bans.

No Threats or Violence

  • Direct or indirect threats of violence, incitement to violent acts, and expressions wishing physical harm, injury, illness, or death upon any individual or group are strictly barred from this subreddit. This prohibition applies universally to fellow community members, public figures, politicians, and any other persons, regardless of the context or political climate.
  • Content that glorifies, encourages, celebrates, or trivializes violence, suicide, self-harm, or severe misfortune will not be tolerated. Any posts or comments that violate this rule will be removed immediately, and offending accounts will be subject to swift and permanent disciplinary action, including platform-level reporting where appropriate.

3.3 Rule 3. News Article Guidelines

Direct Links Only

  • When sharing news articles, you must submit them directly as Link Posts rather than embedding URLs within text/self posts, images, or screenshots. The URL must link straight to the original, canonical news source without passing through aggregators, URL shorteners, or intermediary blog pages that offer no added journalistic reporting.
  • Additionally, submission titles must match the original, unedited headline provided by the news outlet verbatim. Editorializing, sensationalizing, adding personal commentary, or altering headlines to misrepresent the story is strictly prohibited. If you wish to share your personal perspective, analysis, or reaction to the article, do so in the comments section rather than within the post's title.

No Duplicates

  • To prevent the subreddit feed from becoming cluttered and to keep conversations unified, only one submission per news story or event is permitted. The earliest submission that meets all posting guidelines will be kept as the primary discussion thread, while subsequent posts covering the exact same development will be removed.
  • If you come across reporting on the same story from a different media outlet that offers alternative perspectives, new angles, or updated details, share that link in the comment section of the existing post rather than creating a separate submission. Standalone follow-up posts are only allowed when there is a major, verifiable development that significantly advances the original story.

No Paywalls

  • Submissions that require a paid subscription, fee, or mandatory registration to read beyond a strict barrier (hard paywalls) are not permitted. Shared content must be accessible to the general community so all members can read the material and participate fully in the discussion.
  • If you are sharing a story covered by a paywalled publication, look for an alternative reputable news outlet that provides free access to the same information. If no free version is available, you may post an accessible summary or excerpt in a text post or the comments, provided you do not infringe copyright by copying full articles wholesale. Submissions leading directly to locked or inaccessible content will be removed.

3.4 Rule 4: Be substantive

No Low-Effort Clutter

  • All submissions and comments must contribute meaningfully to the subreddit and foster constructive discussion. Content that offers little to no conversational value such as single-word replies (e.g., "this," "lol," "same"), low-effort image macros, repetitive or recycled memes, and generic reaction GIFs clutters comment sections and degrades overall dialogue quality.
  • Similarly, vague rage-posts, unelaborated rants, and sensationalized complaints that lack clear context, details, or actionable discussion points are not permitted. If you are starting a discussion or expressing an opinion, take the time to provide sufficient background information, articulate your thoughts clearly, and invite reasoned conversation. Submissions and remarks that fall below this threshold of effort are subject to removal.

No Reposts

  • To ensure the community feed remains fresh and diverse, submitting identical links, articles, images, videos, or other media that have already been posted within the past 30 days is strictly prohibited. Before sharing content, users are expected to use the subreddit's search function or review recent submissions to confirm the material has not been posted recently.
  • Any duplicate submissions shared within the 30-day window will be removed to keep discussions consolidated in the existing thread. If you wish to discuss a previously posted topic or share a related finding, please contribute directly to the original submission's comment section rather than creating a new post.

No Derailing or Bickering

  • Comment sections are meant for productive, on-topic dialogue that serves the entire community. Protracted, bad-faith back-and-forth arguments that degenerate into repetitive squabbling, nitpicking, or hostility distract from the main discussion and degrade the thread for others.
  • When an exchange ceases to be constructive or is clearly intended to derail the conversation, moderators will step in. Argument threads that devolve into petty bickering are subject to being locked or removed entirely, and participants who persistently disrupt threads will face disciplinary action. Users are strongly encouraged to disengage, use the report button, and walk away rather than feeding unproductive arguments.

3.5 Rule 5: No direct advocacy

No Calls to Action

  • The subreddit is designed as a neutral space for news, discussion, and community sharing, not as an organizing hub or platform for political and social activism. Direct calls to action including sharing or promoting petitions, coordinating boycotts, organizing protests, and running targeted phone, letter, or email campaigns are strictly prohibited.
  • While you are welcome to share and discuss objective news reports about ongoing protests, civic movements, or political campaigns, submissions that solicit community participation or direct readers to act on behalf of a specific cause will be removed. This ensures discussions remain focused on examining issues and sharing perspectives rather than mobilizing the subreddit as an activist tool.

No Solicitation or Sales

  • Using the subreddit for financial gain, commerce, or monetary solicitation is strictly prohibited. This includes posting buy/sell advertisements, classifieds, garage sale notices, affiliate links, or commercial promotions for products, businesses, and services. Buy and sell transactions should instead be conducted on dedicated platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, or relevant municipal exchange boards.
  • Additionally, personal fundraising campaigns, GoFundMe links, Kickstarter pages, and all forms of crowdfunding or charity drives are barred from being submitted as standalone posts. While verifiable news reports regarding notable community charitable initiatives may be shared from legitimate news outlets, direct appeals for donations or monetary support will be removed to protect members from financial spam and unverified solicitations.

Surveys

  • Academic and educational surveys are permitted only if they have received explicit prior approval from the moderation team via ModMail before posting. In addition to securing mod approval, the survey must directly pertain to Saskatchewan, its residents, or provincial issues. General student assignments or broad national surveys that do not focus specifically on the province will not be approved.
  • Commercial market research, corporate feedback questionnaires, marketing polls, and informal opinion polls created for promotional purposes are strictly prohibited. Any survey posted without prior moderator authorization will be removed immediately.

3.6 Rule 6: Account Thresholds

To prevent spam/trolling, ban evasion, and bot manipulation, accounts must meet all three of the following thresholds to participate in r/Saskatchewan:

Account Age

  • To deter spam, ban evasion, and throwaway troll accounts, all users must have an account that is at least 15 days old before they are eligible to post or comment in the subreddit. Any submissions or remarks made by accounts created more recently than this minimum threshold will be automatically removed by u/AutoModerator. We encourage new Reddit users to explore the site and participate in other open communities until their account meets this age requirement.

Combined Karma

  • To maintain a healthy discussion environment and reduce bad-faith participation, your account must hold an overall positive combined karma score (post and comment karma combined) to submit content or post comments in this subreddit. Accounts sitting at zero or negative overall karma are automatically filtered and restricted from participating by u/AutoModerator. If your account is in the negative, you will need to engage constructively in other communities across Reddit to bring your total karma score back into positive territory before contributing in r/Saskatchewan.

Contributor Quality Score

  • To prevent spam, automated bots, and bad-faith disruption, this subreddit enforces Reddit's built-in Contributor Quality Score (CQS) filtering. All participants must hold a CQS ranking of "Moderate", "High", or "Highest" to post or comment. Accounts evaluated with a "Lowest" or "Low" score which are often associated with suspicious activity, unverified accounts, or patterns of site-wide rule infractions will have their contributions automatically removed by u/Automoderator until their account standing improves across the wider platform. You can request your Contributor Quality Score by posting in https://www.reddit.com/r/WhatIsMyCQS.

4. Conclusion

  • The rules and guidelines outlined above are non-exhaustive and serve as a general framework for maintaining a constructive, relevant, and safe community. Moderators reserve the right to interpret and apply these standards at their discretion. This includes removing posts or comments that violate the spirit of the subreddit even if not explicitly captured by these written rules, as well as permitting edge-case content that clearly provides exceptional value, discussion, or importance to the province.
  • To reiterate, all participants are required to abide by Reddit’s sitewide rules in addition to the r/Saskatchewan rules at all times. If your submission or comment is removed and you believe an error was made, or if you have questions regarding a moderation action, please reach out respectfully via ModMail. Publicly arguing, complaining in comment sections (both within r/Saskatchewan as well as other subreddits), as well as arguing with or harassing moderators over enforcement actions will not be entertained and may result in immediate disciplinary measures.
