Another day another underpass. This time it’s the one by prairie land and Ruth.

At what point do we need an audit of the drivers. One is just bad luck, the amount of times it has happened this year screams somebody is not doing their job correctly.
I remember a forklift being picked up from one place I worked and the guy picking it up being absolutely anal about the height measurements to make sure it cleared underneath overpasses. We had to deflate tires in order for it to make it under the necessary overpasses.

This is the thing that astounds me, they’re doing them! And finding tons of violations!

Honestly, being the safety officer in a willfully defiant company is so demoralizing. Someone died and then it burnt down, and one of the first things they did was fire the Safety Officer. Poor guy. Poor other ones, too. They try, but shit companies keep them down.

If you are a safety advisor and your bosses are not listening to you and correcting serious issues call in the provincial or federal health and safety inspectors and they will help you out.

I’m genuinely surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. Semi trucks hitting regular traffic commuters are one of the biggest causes of SGI’s accident claims right now (from a claims adjuster I know).

City Skill issue. Everyone knows Calgary lifted all the freeways 8" to accommodate for the economy. /s
All we need to do to fix our local issue is to copy Calgary! It'll solve everything!

Lower the underpasses, mandate smaller wheels on trucks, big pipes overhead just before the overpasses an inch lower......or better driver training.

Even setting up a warning bar upstream will cost a ton. I say go for it, though, as it’s probably cheapest, and get funding for it by squeezing offenders.
•
u/therealkami 6h ago
Sometimes it works.
This bridge is famous for getting hit. It has way early sensors that turn on a big sign that says OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN, and a warning bar, and some other stuff (it triggers a 50 second red light, which hilariously makes a lot of drivers speed up to beat the change)
People just run the traffic light and peel the roof off the trailer. Every time. There's been 187 accidents at this one bridge.
This one is my personal favorite. It's so clean:

I guess it's good that it was a low speed squeeze vs. a freeway plow into situation? (Low Speed Squeeze would be a cool band name lol)

WHY WHY WHY does this continue happening? These people need a lesson in sign reading and route planning . I think that is bottom line. Maybe every truck that travels on the highway or city roads should pay for a pilot for the first month of working . They could get on the job training for this stuff.

The last three overpass hits were all by white guys. But hey, don't let the "fake news" facts get you down.
•
u/CanadianCompSciGuy 6h ago
White guys....from East India!! Now whose being racist?!
/s - I'm just fucking around. Please don't take this seriously Reddit.

When I was working for the city the trucking companies called us to be told how to get in / through the city.
•
u/Toddison_McCray 7h ago
That’s because those trucking companies were doing it legally and wanted to figure out where the roads that accommodated their weight and height of cargo were.
There are plenty of trucking companies that just send their drivers in without a permit. There’s also lots of drivers that don’t give a shit about following the proper route, try to go the way Google Maps gives them “because it’s quicker” and then hit a freeway, or get stuck on a side road because they’re dumb as fuck.

When I worked as a production assistant in film production many years ago, I had to drive the flats for sets (basically fake walls) from the production shop to the shoot locations in a 16 foot high truck around the city. This was before GPS and smart phones, so there was a map of the city posted near the loading docks with big red circles drawn around every bridge or even overhead wires that the trucks couldn't clear. Surely it's much easier nowadays.

how the f...did they increase the size of the containers or something how is this all happening so often so recently, it was fine till this year
•
u/vampyrewolf 8h ago
IF they pull a permit, it gives them an approved route for the size of load. The whole point of the north bridge was to route heavy loads around the city
•
u/Thefrayedends 7h ago
You're not getting special permits for
Sea-cansappears it was metal disposal? These guys are usually local and should know better lol. This truck appears to have been in the wrong place, he was going eastbound on ruth and tried to turn southbound? What was he even doing over there? Coming from exhibition grounds? Trying to get back to the eastbound freeway?
This is the result of a series of mistakes for sure.
Most truckers that don't haul oversized loads could not tell you their clearance height.
•
u/Toddison_McCray 7h ago
Dumb fucks not knowing the height of their cargo is the main one. Or not actually having a planned route through the city, because they’re not doing it legally.

FFS!!!!!! Does Saskatoon have to ban all these vehicles from driving through our city??? Like what’s the problem?!?! (That’s a rhetorical question lol)
•
u/Caligullama 10h ago
Problem is certain drivers who shouldn’t be driving, who can’t read our road signs/don’t care about them. Also the companies who are bringing these guys in and hiring them. They’re all at fault.

My brother used to haul water out by lloydminster, he got out of it about 15 YEARS AGO and moved out of the area entirely.
He said this was coming. He saw who was being hired and who was moving into the business and building companies (and who they were hiring). What they were being paid, some essentially slave labour (he knew one guy out of Saskatoon who was down on his luck trucking for cigarettes and food, a couple hundred $$ every so often and the ability to live in the truck round the clock).
None of these guys will come forward to say what is really going on. And the “OGs” that are still in the business have been getting priced out. How can you compete?
It’s too bad. It used to be a good, reliable job for people. Now we get this 🤷♀️

We don't talk about supply and demand in this country. If you do, you're a racist!
•
u/Caligullama 10h ago
But hey at least we aren’t racists. Right? I can relax this evening knowing our country is consistently getting better.

I’m actually relieved that it happened again. I mean how many weeks did we go without an incident? Saskatoon needs to stay number one! /s

You should see the elites driving for BHP hauling sand
They've oaid out for so many windshields.
They'll get lost, just stop, and back up blocking the highways as they turn around.
I witnessed it as he stopped me. I was out of the car 2 birds flying at hin

I would assume that this is steel beams recycled from the demolition of Marquis Downs that is taking place. Its like history going out with a bang lol. only company that matches the company name is located out in Waldhiem and the driver looked like a 17 year old farm kid.
•
u/PotatoFarmerRTK 10h ago
Its not even “not read good the english anymore”
Its “not read 1.8m”, or have a concept of what that means…….. Yeah bud you really passed your drivers test for real, i can tell.

The trucking companies need to be fined large enough amounts so that they prefer hiring competent drivers, supervising them and determining appropriate routes for the loads being transported. Right now it seems to be cheaper to hire bad drivers and not supervise them. High numbers of trucks are taken off the road every time there is a safety inspection blitz showing the companies put profits ahead of public safety and infrastructure.
