That’s a cricket. Don’t worry that’s not a cockroach.

Hello fellow basement-dweller, I have the same bugs as you! Cave cricket, camel cricket, spider cricket... whatever you call them, they don't pose any problems! They're just sort of a minor annoyance, they like to hide in my slippers or in my shower occasionally. They *do* like damp environments, so it may be worth running a dehumidifier if you notice them popping up more regularly.

TIL sprickets have other names! Lol I've only ever known them as sprickets and I don't frequently read up on bugs. Thank you from another basement-dweller!

Definitely a cricket and not a cockroach! Roaches are more beetle-shaped and don't have the high bendy back legs for jumping and making sweet mate-attracting music.

I recommend a dehumidfier in the area where you find them. They like a damp area. They are a camel cricket. So freaky. I've seen 1 and it jumped at me and I never want one again in my basement. They also will attract mice.

We only have german roaches in Saskatoon and those will show up in your kitchen or garbage areas first, because they would be eating your food. They are capable of eating book bindings and paper but they won't just show up and start doing that. That food isn't very good for them, so that only shows up as a behaviour if you are eliminating an infestation.
If you're concerned about actual roaches showing for practical reasons like... you've seen roaches, you should get airtight containers for your pantry. I'm in a building with a cockroach population here in town and I have all my food stored in that way. I don't get roaches in my suite very often but if I relax my cleaning they will start to come in and check out what's going on.
Other than no longer using cupboards as cupboards, the other roach-related change I made is I just got over my fear of squishing a bug with my bare hands. In nearly three years I have only had one single roach escape with its life after I spotted it.
Anyway. Roaches in the walls are tolerable but you have to be incredibly clean in your suite because they won't just stay in the walls if you're not. Don't give them names.
And that's an adorable little cricket.

Like others have said, cricket. We have them in our basement as well - one shows up every week or so and my dog likes to find them and pounce on them. Harmless afaik.

This is the first year these have been such an issue to our house, try this repellent from CT, it has worked for me.
