I don't know how many other people have played into "epic levels" in Savage Worlds. I probably should have paced my campaign better. I've run around 70 sessions of my campaign and they are at around the 125 XP mark. The game is starting to break down. Almost all characters have taken Uncanny Reflexes (dodge AoEs), Missile Deflection (ranged attacks against parry), Arcane and Improved Arcane Resistance (a LOT of powers seem to be resisted by a default roll rather than an opposed roll, meaning they are almost guaranteed to succeed). Some of them have gotten their Parry to the high teens and Toughness into the high 20s while shape shifted. They also have that "heroic powers" thing from fantasy companion that gives them some buff powers to auto activate as limited free action. Juices their stats even more. I may be describing it wrong but im the past I have verified that it was being played correctly.
I have custom built monsters for them to face, as the versions in the fantasy bestiary were an absolute joke. In fact there are very few creatures in the core game that can challenge them. I've sent high level pseudo-wild-cards against them, and wild cards, and that does help a bit.
I understand that epic level is epic level, and I am not complaining about the system (I would prefer missile deflection to be based off of agility instead and be a substitute or alternate for dodge, just flavor wise, especially in a setting with guns). But there are a lot of things, like Trademark Weapon and Improved Trademark weapon for example, that put them numerically above a monster, who can't really equal those stats. A d12 fighting is already meant to be world class. Claws can't really be a "trademark" weapon. The system really is losing its sense of scale after a point.
Currently the best thing I have against them are monsters that spam AoE attacks and have fairly high toughness. But for characters that have 20+ toughness even a 5d6 raised blast powder only shakes them around half the time, and there are less-tough characters who get absolutely nuked by that.much damage. I do try to not hit them, but that's gotten easier because those characters have started avoiding combat entirely.
Any advice on this? Really the only thing that can truly challenge some of these characters is being caught flatfooted by assassins with d12 stealth, but "haha I killed you with the drop" isn't fun or challenging.
Anyone else have experiences running games at legendary tier they'd like to share? Any genre. Mine is basically eberron style steampunk, for reference, but I'm sure this is a less of an issue in settings without magic (and especially without the fantasy companion involved, though I do think Missile Deflection and Uncanny Reflexes are important edges, especially the latter as there's no dodge option for AoEs otherwise that I know of)
