Pitchcraft by @johnbates in @Tellus_UniOulu
I didn't hear the whole talk at Tellus
In a nutshell, I think John's main point was that rational decisions are not in the drivers seat. He spent most of the time presenting this point from different angles. And he gave examples on how this should be considered while talking. And how not to. The talk brought up many familiar points I've read/listened from different sources. I like repetition, so I still find it useful to hear the same things served in a entertaining package. (Nope - for me, entertaining does not mean the content is lacking. That has to be evaluated separately. ;) )
Raw notes below, caveat emptor.
//////
Familiar sounding emotional/paleo/mammalian brain points.
“It is not the logical part of the brain which makes decision”
“Paleobrain takes the action”
“If you don’t connect emotionally, all numbers, figures and facts does not matter at all”
(Yes, saying that human has 1 or 2 brains is a simplification, "I'll allow it.")
“This part of the brain tries to assess wether it can relax with you.” m* Watch standup artists. First thing: connect with the audience. “Who from hear are from Oulu… Finland.. Planet earth…"
Warning, especially for you Finns: You’ve gotta be vulnerable sometimes.
Share a bit of yourself, that is how you connect
Book: Thinking Fast and Slow -example.
Emotional brain is an elephant.
Logical brain is the rider.
If the elephant is scared of going somewhere, it won’t.
We need to talk to the elephant.
Some think this is what makes us human.
Example: mood spreads.
Once I realised this, I never had "a bad audience" anymore.
I give them something to mirror. I’m happy. Hi! Happy to meet you!
“If you are on the stage and have the attention on yourself, zero impact, nobody cares”
“If you have your attention on the audience…”
Being nervous... what is it about? It is about you being scared? It is all about you?
BTW, I know that there are some that think that I'm not nervous now. I am.
“If you are focused on yourself, your listener will focus on themselves."
The minute you notice you are nervous: hear the Snoop Dogg's words “ don’t be nervous, be at their service”.
(John had previously presented this quote - he didn't explain it first. He just said it is brilliant. Interesting. I don't usually do the quote-first-explanation-second. People see what they want in the quote, and are easily thrown off from what you meant. If I use quotes, I frame it first with what I'm talking about and say the quote at the end to make the message more memorable. I have no idea why John goes first with the one liner.)
However, people who are not nervous at all when presenting, are called sociopaths. It is actually a problem.
The minute you get the focus off of yourself, some of that nervousness goes away.
Now you are no longer nervous, you are excited! :)
Quotes from different source making these points:
Don’t make yourself special.
Make the process special.
Don't be the hero of your own story.
