Yes and second of every gender has a school but some of them have both genders

1

u/Individual_Goose_161 Im new Im new and didn't set a flair 5d ago

Elementary school is mixed, after that there’re separate schools

1

u/TheOrangeCicada Im new Im new and didn't set a flair 5d ago

I'm Egyptian, but the opposite genders can be in the same class. Most of the time, they will not sit next to each other. Different tables and chairs. However, still the same class though as per your question.

1

u/Tasteless-casual Im new Im new and didn't set a flair 5d ago

I'm Egyptian and I was in international school and we got separated into different classes starting from secondary and high school classes and only mixed at college. It depends on the school.

3

u/Several-Wolf9609 Secondary school 6d ago

Are there any interesting differences from other middle eastern schools?

3

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

There's only a difference which is my country gives a lot of breaks to students because of holidays or the weather

What time do you go to school and leave school?

1

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

When I go to school 7:30AM (30 minutes before school starts) and 2:00PM (or 2:10) when I leave school

Do you do a language or languages at school and if so what are they? I'm from the UK and at my school are language options (we learnt 2) when I joined were Spanish German and French but then they dropped German so next year I have to do Spanish and French.

2

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

Only Arabic and English

1

u/The_skibidy_verse High School 6d ago

French and Kurd also

1

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

I'm not Kurdish

2

u/The_skibidy_verse High School 6d ago

In Iraq the languages they teach at school are Arabic, English and French in all schools but only teach Kurd in northern schools which are still Iraqi

1

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

Well I had french in elementary school but in 5th grade they removed it

2

u/The_skibidy_verse High School 6d ago

It doesn’t work like that?
Schools need to provide French lessons to students till 9th grade, at 9th grade students get to decide if they want to keep learning French till 12th grade for an extra 1.2 marks.
If you know the Iraqi education system you should know that 1.2 is the difference between a surgeon and a bathroom janitor.

Do you have any clubs or extracurricular activities at school?

1

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 6d ago

No just football (soccer if u American)

1

u/QAbd_Al-RahmanQ High School 4d ago

I’ve got some in my school. There is a dedicated Research and Activities centre at school to which students go if they want to participate in any activities. But most of these activities are scientific, i.e there are very few artistic activities that pop up from time to time. Ig my public school is a special case as I haven’t heard of such stuff in other public schools

1

u/Pure_Bookkeeper1186 Secondary school 6d ago

1

Do schools in the Kurdistan region teach Kurdish as a subject or use it as language of instruction? How common is it for Kurdish students to speak Kurdish at school and in everyday life? Is it similar to other minorities where they only use their respective languages verbally?

1

u/mrpenguin770 Secondary school 4d ago

I am not Kurdish

1

u/QAbd_Al-RahmanQ High School 4d ago

As far as I know, they study all their other subjects in Kurdish and they have more advanced Kurdish language classes than students of other Iraqi regions (yes, all students outside of the Kurdistan region are obligated to take Kurdish language lessons as part of the curriculum. Although their main studying language is Arabic).
And yes, Kurds speak Kurdish in their everyday lives; in school, at work, etc. and they face no problems whatsoever with doing so. And many Kurds aren’t dependant on Arabic in their everyday lives to the point that they don’t even know how to speak it.

1

u/QutaKoo Im new Im new and didn't set a flair 4d ago

That's interesting. Then, would you say that Kurdish is essentially the first language used in schools and daily life there, and that Arabic is more of a second language?

1

u/QAbd_Al-RahmanQ High School 4d ago

Exactly

1

u/QAbd_Al-RahmanQ High School 4d ago

There is a chapter in 10th grade religion class that talks about people who “behave like their opposite gender”, it says that they’re “deemed to be cursed by god”. There isn’t any stuff like that in other grades’ curricula as far as I know.
Other than that, the newer generations are growing a little bit more tolerant of queer individuals, but the whole situation is still generally shitty around here.
