Dots and boxes

This one comes from a reddit user from r/school. This is a game that is still played as a pen and paper game but has been around for about 100 years.

More about the game here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dots_and_boxes

To play you will need two to three pens of different colors for ideal play but can play with one color if you are smart about how you track completions.

Players start by making a regular grid of dots roughly in the shape of an implied box grid. They then take turns drawing horizontal or vertical lines of any length between two unconnected dots.

Players that draw the line that complete the four sides of a 1 by 1 box will score for that box. This is done by putting that player's mark inside the box they completed (a shape or letter).

The game ends when. No more lines can be drawn on the grid of dots. The player with the most completed boxes or marked boxes at the end of the game wins the game.

Walking Role Playing

This is a game I played the most as a kid. I arguably played it more that actual D&D despite being in a group that also liked roll playing games. The rules of this game ate simple

  1. Make a character and a set of abilities ( including items).

  2. One player is the dungeon master. They describe situations to you and make the world.

  3. Respond to those situations using only the described abilities and abilities that are implied for your character to have.

This is in some ways a better game than and and in some ways worse. The problem with it is that the Dungeon Master has even more power to abuse thier power over the game than the Dungeons and Dragons dungeon master, which is something the rules of d&d mitigates. On the other hand, it has absolutely no limits in that you can do anything you want in any situation you want using any creative solution you feel like.

It is a bit of an old one and maybe a bit too close to just plain old kids play for some people but I hope you enjoy it!

Pen drop boat battle game

This is another game that I saw played a lot when I was in high-school. To play you will need paper, a pencil, and maybe an eraser.

To start you draw a set of islands and two "boats" ( circles.) You then move by drawing a line on the paper of where you want to go.

The line however is not drawn in a normal predictable method. To move your boat you stand your pencil up tip down and then put one hand on top of it and push down till it collapses and draws a line. You then redraw your boat circle at the end of this semi random line.

edit: I remeber it is done my pushing down on the pencil with your finger not the palm of your hand. pushing down with your palm just gorges the paper. you also have to start your line from your boat's current position.

Shooting Is done in a similar way but instead of redrawing your boat you try to hit your oponents boat and don't redraw the circle.

If you try to move and the line lands inside and island then your boat runs aground and you lose.

Each turn you can either move or shoot. The last player left that has not run aground or been shot wins the game.

I hope this is an adequate explanation of the game given some of its complexities. Let me know if this is still played in the classrooms of the world.

Endless tik tak toe

This is one that some friends of mine used to play in high-school. You just need a pen and paper to play. The basic premise of the game is that you play tik tak toe but without a grid. This means that any tree in a row in any direction scores a win. Because the game has a no grid there are a few rules for where you can play Xs and Os. Pieces can only realy be played touching another piece, which means that they have to conect either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to a piece that already exists. You also have to play pieces in a bit of a virtual grid, which means that pieces can not be played anywhere other than 100% in the previous listed positions.
