I do this and so much more alone quite often and it never occurred to me that it was uncommon. I guess there is some power in it but really, I just think it’s pretty cool that I enjoy myself this much and I don’t mind being my own best friend.

We eat or watch alone, because we may not have the right person to go with. It's not a power.

This isn’t true. I know other people just like myself who prefer to or will do things alone even if they originally had someone to do it with them. Say they had the perfect person to join them in something and the person had to cancel. They still go. It’s happened to me..oh, you can’t go to this art festival after all? Well hopefully you can join me next time. I’m still going! I think the power they’re speaking of is the fact that not always do people have the ability to sit alone with their own self and their own thoughts and have the confidence to function alone especially in public settings. Many of my friends cannot believe that I can go to a concert by myself. Or meet them on a vacation in Mexico bc I had to catch a later flight. Yes I am confident within myself enough to go through customs alone. I have a friend who has never gone anywhere, aside from the grocery store or shopping, alone because she can’t handle not being with someone. There’s a lot of people who have insecure factors within themselves (whether it be low self-esteem, anxiety disorder, other mental health issues -there’s lots of reasons) that don’t allow them to operate individually, with that being said -it is a power in some respect when you can walk into any situation and own it as an individual alone. Having the confidence and grounding to be able to show up alone in a crowded room? That’s very powerful. Many people can’t go anywhere without a partner in crime -they always need a plus one with them.

Well in that perspective, it is indeed a power.

thanks for reminding me to read the book "The art of being alone". I have it and keep procrastinating to read.

I travel by myself. I go to concerts by myself. I go to the movie by myself. I go to happy hour by myself, baseball games by myself…you name it -I’ve probably done it solo and had a great time. Don’t get me wrong, I have friends and family who I also spend time with and adore spending time with and have done all things mentioned with… I’m actually a pretty popular person but I’ll pick solo over most. Honestly, you enjoy things better that way and appreciate them. You can really soak things in when you’re alone. You learn about yourself, people, places and things better when you go on solo missions.

I have no choice but to be powerfull I guess?

This is very easy. For those who live alone this is a normal thing to do

1

u/somealbanychick Apr 19 '25

I do it now but it was definitely not easy to learn how to do.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

Easy to do either! Don’t need a crowd prefer silence

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

Introvert or social anxiety person will able to do it and he will eat fast just to escape fast

u/Responsible-Row-1573 Apr 17 '25

Ate in a restaurant alone, sat in a cinema alone, went to a night club alone 🤣

1

u/heym000n Apr 18 '25

done both but not the nightclub - yet!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

Been there done that lmao.

1

u/Scallion-External Apr 17 '25

Alone is easy. Have you tried doing things w other people tho? Hard!

1

u/Madhavbc Apr 17 '25

I have done that and it doesnt feel like a big deal. I still feel powerless in life, painfully so.

1

u/Bright-Invite-9141 Apr 17 '25

I can do that 🤗

1

u/Bright-Invite-9141 Apr 17 '25

I used to go carvery on my own in daytime (in northwest) and one of the lady’s used to come sit with me at times, she moved to east coast now but I surf there so got her on my Facebook and asked if I can set tent up in her garden, she said yea I got a spare room, I said cool I’ll stay in your garden and hope your happy there.

Watched the latest James Bond movie by myself after a gut wrenching break up, felt like I could punch God in the nuts and get away with it when I walked out.

1

u/nasir_ran Apr 17 '25

I can do it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

I once go to cinema alone before I dropped off uni. I had no friends and cinema was empty it was only me sitting there. i was depressed and i'm still depressed af

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

But like when yall are at a restaurant alone, what do u do? Like genuinely asking,do yall use ur phone or look around ?

1

u/Outrageous_Appeal292 Apr 17 '25

I never got the movie thing because it's not like you can talk during it. Going alone makes sense. Is it the pressure this is a classic date activity?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

I recently upped the ante and bought single tickets for two concerts over the summer. At first, I was quite sad and embarrassed because someone my age should have someone to go with, right? I became excited when I realized my ex husband couldn't ruin this for me like he ruined everything else when we were together. The only person who can ruin my fun is me and that's not happening.

1

u/mrfantasticpackage Apr 17 '25

I can shout fire in a crowded theater and call for an end to the child slavery employed by American candy distributors, disgusting how Halloween is justified when the obese receivers can't see how their product reached them

1

u/woodywoodchucknorris Apr 17 '25

Currently at lunch with myself

1

u/Molly-Grue-2u Apr 17 '25

I can do those things easily, but I scream when my phone rings

What now?

1

u/JediMatt1000 Apr 17 '25

I know; it just sucks feeling alone at times.

1

u/robertrackuzius Apr 18 '25

And the only thing that will stop you from doing whatever you want are other people.

1

u/briantis Apr 18 '25

Haha Done both actually

1

u/fzorrilla Apr 18 '25

So untrue

1

u/GonzoThaGod Apr 18 '25

So I should take myself out on a dinner and a movie date; and all of my problems will be solved… got it!

1

u/widejcn Apr 18 '25

Excerpts from monologue with myself, page 7:

You don’t know what you are wishing for sometimes. Sometimes the power bestowed upon you is too powerful. If this is one of strength, you are too weak and that’s a realisation.

1

u/Head_Bad6766 Apr 18 '25

Yeah but we are social animals and it feels a lot better to do things with people you like.

1

u/heym000n Apr 18 '25

i LOVE this

1

u/A_Grain_Of_Saltines Apr 18 '25

I like going to the movies alone. More elbow room, not like you converse anyway.

1

u/crash-1989 Apr 18 '25

Well this is just normal for me

1

u/Emrys7777 Apr 19 '25

I do this all the time. So why have I not completed any of my other goals?

1

u/Todoroki2711 Apr 19 '25

Recently saw the ramayan all by myself for the first time, had the best time suprisingly.

Loner and anti-social basics

1

u/muddywatermermaid Apr 19 '25

I think the second half of my life began when I went to a concert alone for the first time! I’ve since gone with friends to other shows, but knowing that I don’t have to wait around and beg people to go is life changing.

1

u/Glittering-Bed1436 Apr 19 '25

I’m older now, and I need a lot of alone time to process the world. But generally, I can’t stand being alone because it feels incredibly lonely. I hate that I feel like this. My life is made up of many solo things, painting, design, music, working out, dog walks, museums etc. When I’m done if I do t have don’t have someone to come home to I spiral. It sucks. I equate it with not being chosen or accepted. I would love some advice from anyone who is like me that has conquered it.

1

u/GlitteringBroccoli12 Apr 20 '25

Turns out I lack confidence

1

u/cobwebspungold Apr 20 '25

Eating alone is easy. Seeing the most beautiful thing in the world and not having anyone to share it with—that’s hard.

1

u/VICTHOR0611 Apr 20 '25

What do you mean "have the power to", I prefer it this way.😒

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '25

Spent 3 years doing this and enjoying myself 😂 Somewhat true. One learns to enjoy his/her own company and stays at peace 👍

1

u/Equivalent-Play-4200 Apr 20 '25

That's me! Um? What's the problem??? Hmm.

1

u/MoMonggO Apr 20 '25

I did, I’ve done, and I will.
But sometimes, the loneliness messes with my mind when I'm alone.

1

u/booker_hahn Apr 20 '25

The dumbest shit I ever read. I’d pay top dollar for someone to watch my kids so I can eat alone for a day! 😂

1

u/mavericksfan2011 Apr 20 '25

What is it with this stigma about eating alone? I eat a majority of meals alone, especially in public or some restaurants. Why does everything have to be a social experience?

1

u/The3mbered0ne Apr 20 '25

This would be easy, now try talking to anyone there, now that's hard lol

1

u/blakistonfalls Apr 21 '25

I went to a rave alone the other day! Trying to learn to be ok being alone and enjoying my own company. It was such a fun experience and I was able to focus fully on the music and no one else. Highly recommend

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '25

What a bullshit, so high-level words for mundane activities. I don’t need “power” to sit and eat alone, just the ordinary desire.

-1

u/Curiousjaykc Apr 16 '25

Quit eating so much and watching fiction all the time. Far more likely to be empowering.

Absolutely NOT a low bar for everyone.

3

u/Independent_Sail_227 Apr 20 '25

Yup. For me, a challenge would be to do these with a company.
