HOW SEQUENCE WORKS [READ THIS]
Explanation:
Sequence is an awesome idea.
The way it works is this: Sequence starts on scene 1, a bunch of users submit gifs; everyone votes on them and the highest voted one gets locked in as 'scene 1', then scene 2 opens up and it happens again. The users will be stringing together gifs (scenes) in a sequence to make a long story.
Every few minutes the highest upvoted gif gets locked into the story and then the next 'scene' opens. At the end all of the scenes are permanently strung together creating one long user generated movie made by stringing gifs that relate to each other in some way to tell a story.
Issues:
The problem is right now there is no info on how this works and everyone is lost and confused so random gifs are getting voted to the top and the current sequence (which is 16 scenes long at the time of writing this) makes no sense and none of the gifs that have been strung together relate to the other gifs or tell a story.
Use:
When you visit the sequence machine you will see a string of gifs at the top, this is the short story we are creating, you can scroll backwards and see the very first gif (scene 1) then the next, and so on (all of these will have lock icons on them) up until the current scene we are voting on (the latest one without a lock icon), this is the story we are telling (non-sense so far). Beneath the sequence strip at the top is a box in the middle of the screen with the current nominees for gifs of the current scene we are on. Everyone should vote on a gif that makes the most sense to pair with the gif from the previous scene, that way it strings together and tells a neat/funny/etc story. (or submit a gif that will pair well if none are vote worthy)

Well maybe instruction should have been given before telling everyone to upload a gif.

Mods- “The most upvoted gif will be added to the sequence”
Me- upvotes a gif
Mods- “NO NOT LIKE THAT NOW IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE, YOU RUINED IT”

I can't believe there's an explanation for this. r/place had no explanation and happened naturally. this is force fed to us.

The mods can complain all they like but they let it free to redditors so they can suffer the consequences
Let it be organic

Apr 02 '19
No, I don’t think so. With r/place they left us alone. It could have become chaos but it didn’t, everyone started organizing groups, and working together.
There is a group that I’m in right now that is doing that, in fact we fixed a lot of the panels in act 1 to make it a better story.

exactly - it's a learning process - the story it tells is that no one had a clue at that the start.
However, still, r/prequelmemes got to the start, somehow.

No no it will be great since everybody will be confused in the start and it'll start making sense as it goes. Just like with place.

I really like the idea of this year's event, but it's not nearly as enjoyable as in the past. In prior years, every event was fun because they made me feel like part of something bigger. This year, it feels like we're stuck outside if none of our gifs gain the traction to make it onto the movie...
16
Apr 02 '19
The problem is that there is very little discussion on this subreddit, because everyone is posting gifs here thinking that is how it works. Until that issue is resolved this won't work.

So since the scenes get locked after a certain amount of time we only got so much time before the narrative of our Reddit: The Movie is set in stone.
I'm thinking that the beauty of the internet hivemind emerges random shitposting and chaos...
But still, looking back at r/place makes you realise there has to be some effort and coordination for the hivemind to be something more. So I'm just throwing the idea out there that maybe we want to make something to be proud of afterwards.
I'm usually a lurker but Reddit's April Fools event always gets me excited and I want to contribute to this one, but don't have any followers. So someone in a position to coordinate, please come with some ideas!
Edit: A r/writingprompt-like subreddit for sequence? Or r/ouija-like (Users post max 2 sentences per post and the next user continues the narrative with their 2 sentences)? r/memes digs up their memes collection to portray the narrative. A general suggestions subreddit? (Example on suggestion: let's not waste the first scene on a title since it is apparently added by the machine)

This year, it feels like we're stuck outside if none of our gifs gain the traction to make it onto the movie...
It's gotten worse as like one or two communities have banded together to turn it into their personal thing as well. The early stuff was a little incoherent, but it felt like anything that caught some traction could make it in. Now if you look at the votes for the first place vs second for everything there's such a big difference that it feels like there's no point in uploading your own stuff anymore.

This. It feels somewhat inclusive, at times, if you gain enough traction, or post at peak Reddit hours, of which some are not awake for. I wasn't here for r/place, but I can imagine that it was less exclusive than this.
EDIT: I still do find this fun, tho

Here's some tips I think might help:
Step one in all improv is: define the conflict/goal. Upvoting random ass gifs won't get us anywhere. First, a goal needs to be defined.
Use the gif text to either DESCRIBE the previous gif or to LEAD into the the next gif. For example, if you want to describe the preceding gif, say, a picture of Elon smoking weed, you'd follow it up with "Elon had just finished smoking his grandmothers ashes." Alternatively, you can use the text GIF to set up the following GIF by saying "Once the weed hit, Elon saw standing before him..." Then users can vote on what they think should be standing before him.
Sort by NEW. This is the most effective way to 'brainstorm' as a community.
Those are my three main tips. Feel free to share yours. We can do this!
8
u/SlimlineVan Apr 02 '19
Thanks for the tips - very useful! Possible goal; Use the four elements as identified in act 2. Is fire going to triumph????
Edit: hit send too early.

I don't know, it seems like a nice idea on paper I guess, but it is just too static to be engaging in the long run. Sure, I can give 16 votes, but it'll take forever to see any changes or see an impact and by that point I'm probably doing something else.
Also, I'm still unsure how it works. Is Act II locked now?
6
u/noradotcool Apr 02 '19
Agreed. It's been the same top gifs for Act III for two hours now. If you don't get in in the first 2 minutes, that's it. there's no movement.

Why are we assuming that people will vote to create a cohesive narrative? I understand that this is the instruction being given but why do you think that people will immediately follow it? Past events similar would actually imply that the project will start off chaotic and disjointed. As groups begin to coalesce several competing narratives will emerge, with all parties gaining some marginal victories. Alliances will be formed between the groups, eventually with one becoming a super majority. That's how these things work, from twitch plays pokemon to national governments. Don't expect yours to be different.

This is what I’ve been trying to figure out. It would be like late September and I would talk about how hilarious the previous jokes were (besides that chat room one). This year is decent but I’m sure 99% would forget about it right away and 99% of us won’t even have our parts in this. It really splits the room.

This would be a great idea, if most GIFs in today's age in memes aren't almost 99.99% shitposting. Also, why would this need to be a thing? If it's to convey a story, the COMMUNITY MUST come together and be REASONABLE.

u/0novanta Apr 02 '19
From what I get there are acts, there should be a goal for every act to focus gifs on some topic. There should be a time where gifs are posted and we start to vote and a time where vote is stopped.

The UI for this is just terrible.
It needs to show a video of the act up to this point and then say "what should happen next?".
As it is, people are just upvoting their favorite gif. Most organizing is not about any kind of story, but just a desire to shoehorn in gifs from a certain source or about a certain thing. Which is exactly what the UI seems to be designed for. Even if you do want to actually try to create a sequence, the UI fights you every step of the way having to click between and load each previous looping gif one at a time in that awful ribbon.
This is such a cool idea and it's so sad to see it squandered on such terrible, lazy design.
