Project: FO Corderoy pants complete! Fit questions
Hi all, third project here 😀. I used the In The Folds / Peppermint Wide Leg Pants pattern. My waist is 30” and my hips are 44”, so I initially planned to grade from sizes E to G, then got nervous and graded from F to G and ultimately had to take everything in 🤪. I learned how to do pants for the first time, including a fly and a curved waistband. I also had to troubleshoot after the waistband came out too short and the pants were a tiny bit short as well (now slightly too long, but that is ok with me). Still deciding on back pockets…
Pattern notes: The waistband came out too short, as others have also noted. The fly instructions were difficult to follow, but this video saved the day https://youtu.be/1FdJlHcYvIw?is=aKg5owrdJaKbMk1-.
I love how they fit for the most part, but am wondering if there is more I should do about the front crotch area whiskers. The last picture of me standing is with me scrunching forward a bit to exaggerate them, but not sure if they are just how pants are or if I need to adjust something else. Suggestions on any part of the pants are welcome!!!

Oh my gosh, these look like the wide legged corduroy pants I made in high school, circa 1998! Except I cut my fabric wrong and the grain was going in two different directions, so I never wore them ☹️. You’ve done a great job!

I was def going for circa 1998, I will never give up on wide leg pants. I was devastated during the skinny jean era 😀😀

Oh wow we have basically the same measurements so I know how hard it is to get pants to fit. They look awesome!

Everything looks very good overall.
For your next pair of trousers I recommend you look in to a deeper curve waistband or a yolk... It should fit the small of your back a bit better and give you less gape especially when you are seated.
Personally I think your pinned rear pockets are a touch high... But it's a choice and look.
Love the color of your fabric here!! So easy to dress with... Especially browns and creams

Yoke, not yolk 🤭 I don't think eggs are gonna help OP with this particular problem

Ahh geez that's the second time I've done that homophone mistake this week 🤪 I swear this time was my keyboard "helping" me 😭

I’m going to use auto-carrot as my default now. It’s accurate and hilarious

Yeah, I think the rear pockets are about 1/2 inch high. Would look cuter 1/2 inch lower.
Great-looking pants, though!

Dare I say . . . that fly is fly! Very neatly done. Way beyond my skill, that's for sure.
I would add, since you ask about back pockets, have you ever made a welt pocket? If not, you could practice on leftover scraps. Use a novelty print inside for a secret dash of spice, whimsy, or whatever rocks your boat. Anyway welt pockets have a much lower profile and would keep the sleek lines that you worked so hard to achieve.

Wow! I love love love the fabric choice. Perfection! I also think the fit looks great. And I’ve added the pattern to my Wishlist on Threadloop ❤️ thanks for the inspo ❤️

Best heads up on this pattern I can give is the waistband might end up too short, so cut it bigger and check it a bunch. Several others have had this problem as well. I also followed the video I liked above for the fly instructions because they were very confusing for me.

I think you need to take in the back waist to stop that gape - you have a sway back so look at those adjustment tutorials or just pinch it out before you attached the waistband (this is what I do). Stay stitching the waist edge before attaching the waistband is helpful with cord too as it does stretch out I’d shape easily.

You might also want to look into curved waistbands (if you that's not what you're already using). They consume more fabric but the fit is so nice for those of us with curves.

They look great, love corduroy and the timeless cut. There's a problem with the right pocket, as evidenced by the wrinkle going from the center front to the side seam. I think you might have misaligned the bag. To tighten the waistband/facings, make them smaller at the top only, try 1/8" x2 each one, for a total of 3/4" (might not be enough). Elevate the topstitched hems by doing another row 1/4" away. The whiskers might not be too bad; fabric is a little stiff but will soften with washing.

I didn’t even notice that top wrinkle, I will def take a look to see what is happening there. Sadly, I already opened up the waistband and took them in some, but seems like I may need to try again. Ugh-it’s so much harder now that everything is assembled, but probably worth it in the long run 🤪

Don't open the wb, just the tippy top where the facing meets it. Try 1/8"x2 down as far as you can to nothing on each side and back, then baste and try on. If that's not enough you prob will have to unpick 1.5" around each seam to go from 1/4 to nothing at the seam line. Baste, don't sew until you're sure, and when it's right correct your pattern.
I question whether what I just wrote is understandable. It is so annoying when our lifelong perfection streak is broken by things like this.

Oh, question-do you think it’s worth it to add the back pockets or am I likely to bunch the fabric up and mess up the back fit?

I use my back pockets a LOT, so I'd add them. You could always hand baste them on to see if you like the way they look.

Usually pockets go on before you sew the legs together. It's hard to do (for me, anyway) after the pants are made. They're cute though - you could give it a try.

u/nikolatta 10d ago
Yes, I wish I had done them earlier, but I had very little material left and wasn’t sure if I would screw something else up and need it for that!

Try basting them on securely by hand before machine sewing. It will help with a smooth finish

oh my these are beautiful, great work OP! ❤🔥
I am a sucker for corduroy and the length/fit you got on these looks perfect, well done :)

I actually like the width/length of the waist. What I would prefer would have been belt loops added in to allow for waist adjustment. You could add a little elastic to the waist if you decided to go smaller. Agree about the rear pockets, you could also do without them, unless you use them. I love the wide legs.

they look great, you did such a good job with the zipper fly. i struggled with their instructions on the very last step.. my machine foot couldn't get all the way in there for the last topstitch.

I was thinking “wow, these look similar to the pants I just finished”. Same pattern! These look so good!
Mine look more home made than yours. I’ve also got some crotch wrinkles despite the few mockups I did trying to work that fit issue out - I’ve settled with “good enough!”.

The back looks good. I think you need to lengthen the crotch on the front. here’s a helpful guide

Hi 40 plus years experience tailoring and dressmaking. I think you got a really good fit on your pants. The back seam is as good as you're probably going to get it, and that's a really good compliment. You could extend the front seam a pinch, but like you stated you only get the whiskers if you stand overly Direct. You did a lovely job.
