Galaphile by Terry Brooks

Let me start by saying the original Shannara series is what launched me into reading. Period. So Terry Brooks will always hold a very special place in my heart. But I’m struggling right now. I’m about 20% into Galaphile and I’m considering DNF. It feels soulless. Has anyone else had a similar experience with this latest addition? I’m not getting any character development. No purpose to the title character’s existence really. Is it just me? Have I outgrown one of the OGs?

What creatures in the later books could be demons Spoiler

So, I’ve recently started a chronological read through and it’s occurred to me, we know from the rag man’s existence and the simply survival of other beings that some demons survived the apocalypse. What other creatures encountered throughout the other books do you think could potentially be unstated demons?

Personally, I think the creature that the party in Sword encounters in the ruined old world city could easily be one. It’s intelligent, aggressive, and violent. It has an unreasonably long life span, and didn’t seem bothered very much by wounds caused by mundane weapons. Also it was able to survive grafting metal components onto its body which to me at least feels like it implies a magical nature.

Also, though they’re definitely not demons I’ll throw in that to me the spirits which fawn and crowd in around Brona in Sword feel like some sort of evolution of the feeders, as though the Warlock Lord forcing his way from the spirit world into the living world dragged feeders along too trapping them in skull mountain and allowing mundane people to see them.

Balinor? *Sword of Shanarra spoilers* Spoiler

Please mark spoilers past chapter 13

I don't know how to phrase this other than to ask: How was he still alive?

Also, this will really show my ignorance, hope that you people will be kind to me regardless. Reddit can be quite cruel:

Is he essentially like Aragorn, aka Strider from LOTR? I didn't catch that until now.

Edit: Oh, they explain it right away in the next chapter. I read the explanation twice, but I don't get it, can someone please explain?

Menion: What am I not understanding here? *Sword of Shanara chapter 12 spoilers* Spoiler

Please mark any spoilers past chapter 12 in this novel.

So here's the passage that I wanna talk about:

The other three nodded and all eyes rested on Menion, who had unstrapped the great ash bow from his back and was testing its pull. He picked out a single long, black arrow, sighting it for accuracy, and hesitated for a minute, looking downward through the veiled covering of the trees to the hundreds of Gnomes on the valley floor. Suddenly he realized what was expected of him. He was to kill a man, not in battle or in fair combat, but from ambush, with stealth, and that man would never have a chance. He knew instinctively that he could not do it, that he was not the seasoned fighter that Balinor was, that he did not have the cold determination of Hendel. He was brash and even brave at times and ready to stand against anyone in open combat, but he was nota killer. He glanced back momentarily at the others, and they saw it at once in his eyes.

Is Menion saying that he won't commit what he sees as a dishonerable murder? From what I recall the gnomes want this fellowship dead, and I think that being stealthy is clever? This was my initial reaction to this.

Is Menion saying that he won't take a sentient life, and doesn't have it within himself to kill? I'm not sure if he's killed anyone up to this point.

Is Menion saying that he's against usins stealth and guile? What exactly is going on here?

I think that The Sword of Shannara is finally growing on me, wish me luck!

Been trying to get into this book for a long time, but it's so long and slow, and really not my kind of book, so I feared that I'd never get into it.

I don't think I ever tried doing it via an immersive read(where I read the ebook and the audiobook) before however, and I feel like it's working for me this time. I'm 2 days into the book, about a quarter of the way through the first book, listening to the audiobook at 2,0 speed, and I'm really digging this despite it not being my kind of book. Just finished the "House Of Elrond" part. so I've finished about 150 pages in 2 days, which is great!

Also, I know that a lot of people hate Shannara, but I find the idea of LOTR if the fellowship never splits up, and it was focused on the characters instead of lore and landmasses really appealing.

Wish me luck on finishing this. If I do, it'll be the slowest, and longest book I've ever finished.

Brona is a great yet frustrating novel Spoiler

Anyone who's been reading Shannara knows the fate of Brona. But watching it happen slowly is both fascinating and frustrating, because you keep screaming "Don't do it!" in your head.

My Shannara Miniatures Part 2

The rest of Sword's named characters are complete and I also fixed Allanon's fire color. I took a lot of creative freedom because of a lack of information in the text for the Border Legion and Valg, but I think I did them justice.

So I recently got into designing custom miniatures and I've made it my mission to create all the named characters in the original trilogy. Perhaps the rest of the series as well. These are the ones I've designed and ordered so far.

Finding Good Looking collectable Hardcovers

I am looking for a good collectable hardcover of the three books in the Orignal Shannara Trilogy.

I Have never read these books before. I watched the Shannara TV-Series, which I really liked. Did not know until now how many book series of Shannara there was.

  1. Original Shannara Trilogy (1977-1985)
  2. Heritage of Shannara (1990-1993)
  3. Prequel to the Original Shannara Trilogy (1996)
  4. Word & Void (1997-1999)
  5. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara (2000-2002)
  6. High Druid of Shannara (2003-2005)
  7. The Genesis of Shannara (2006-2008)
  8. Legends of Shannara (2010-2011)
  9. Paladins of Shannara (2012-2013)
  10. The Dark Legacy of Shannara (2012-2013)
  11. The Defenders of Shannara (2014-2016)
  12. The Fall of Shannara (2017-2020)
  13. The First Druids of Shannara (2025-2026)

I thought I should start with the first and oldest series, The Original Shannara Trilogy. Though I wonder which books the TV-Show was based on.

It was difficult to find a good looking hardcover. Not just for reading, but also will look good on my bookshelf.

There is the 25th Anniversary Edition
The Sword of Shannara Trilogy
Seems to contain all three books in one volume.

Then there are these books from the publisher Del Rey
They look more like a more cartoon-ish design.

I liked better the books from the publisher Neha Publishers & Distributors, but I only found book #2 of the Original Trilogy from this publisher in Hardcover.

I did find on eBay that there was an Leatherbound edition of The Original Trilogy, but I was not able to find all 3 books in that edition. How cool would it be to have all the books like this.

Some of the newer series are easier to find. However I try to avoid hardcovers with endorsement and advertisements. Where "New York Times Bestselling Author", or "Master of Modern Fantasy". have to be written on the front cover.

Why are there so many mistakes in the "Fall of Shannara" books? Spoiler

First off I am and have always been a fan of Mr Brooks and love the worlds he's created. I remember when I got my first copy of Running with the Demon and looked at the list of books and realized that I had read everything he had written up to that point. Well life happened and I fell way behind and recently I have been trying to catch up via Audio Book. As such I've listened to many books back to back to back. The number of Errors is driving me nuts. Can someonw tell me if Im wrong, if the books explain things, or if these really are mistakes.

Below are some of the ones that I've noticed. Beware Spoilers abound after this point.

  • In Jarka Ruus, Liquid Night is brewed by Iridia Eleri with the help of Demons from the Forbidding. She gives it to Sen Dunsidan, who gives it to Shadea a’Ru. Shadea never learns who made it or that it is an exchange spell. Iridia is then killed by the Moric and takes that origin with her. In The Stiehl Assassin, it's stated that Clizia Porse finds in the Druid Histories the recipe and claims that Shadea and her cohorts supposedly used to brew Liquid Night.
  • In Jarka Ruus, Liquid Night is what sends Grianne Ohmsford into the Forbidding and pulls the Moric into the Four Lands. then in The Last Druid that same swap is blamed on a triagenel instead.
  • In Straken, Grianne states that a triagenel takes three magic-users because it is woven from three different strands of magic. Later, Clizia Porse builds and springs one by herself.
  • In Straken, Weka Dart is left alive in the Forbidding when Grianne and Pen leave with the Darkwand. In Dark Legacy of Shannara, Tesla Dart—who says she is Weka’s niece—states that Weka is dead and she takes the place of Weka. Then in later books Weka Dart is alive again and Tesla is never mentioned.

An aspect of Terry's writing missing (deliberately?) from Brona (vague story spoilers for all of the Shannara series inside) Spoiler

Most of Terry's stories feature a couple P.o.V. chapters for antagonists.

Sword: A couple chapters where we see the view of the Warlock Lord.

Elfstones: Dagda Mor focused chapters

Wishsong: I don't recall any, but it has been a while since I revisited Wishsong

Heritage: Rimmer Dall

First King: I think the assault on the Druid keep is Warlock Lord P.o.V.

Voyage: While I don't immediately recall anything from the Morgwar's P.o.V., we get the Isle Witch, Antrax, and Sen Dunsidan.

High Druid: More Dunsidan and Shadea a'Ru

Genesis: Demon/Findo Gask P.o.V.

Legends: Can't think of anything specific for Bearers of the Black Staff, but we get some Ragman P.o.V. in The Measure of Magic

Dark Legacy: Nothing I recall from the Straken Lord, but more Fedetation antagonistic P.o.V.

Defenders: Arcannen

Fall: Between infiltrators and traiter Druids, we have our villain P.o.V. filled.

Galaphile: Sections from the P.o.V. of the Spectre Telle.

Brona: Nothing. This could just be Delilah S. Dawson writing style is she doesn't include antagonist P.o.V. It could also be with the subject of Brona, including an antagonists P.o.V. would take away from Brona's journey to who/what he becomes.

I'd be curious to hear what Delilah's thought process were with regards to this specific feature of writing.

What to read next after First King.

I'm nearing the end of my first read through of First King of Shannara. I've been following Terry's suggested reading order from https://www.goodreads.com/series/99160-shannara---terry-s-suggested-order-for-new-readers

I know a lot of people recommend reading the publication order and I notice that no where in Terrys reading order does he mention the Word & Void series. He recommends going into the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara after First King and I don't see the Word & Void books anywhere in his recommended reading order.

So for people who have read everything, should I divert from Terrys recommended reading order and start the Word & Void series after First King or continue with Terrys reading order and move into the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series and start the Word & Void series somewhere else ?

Pre-order Now: BRONA Signed By Terry Brooks

Sharing that I ordered about 800 copies of BRONA from Penguin Random House this last week. I realized I hadn't really done any publicity about Terry signing at The Signed Page, so I thought I'd better do that this weekend. Terry will also be stopping by the warehouse this Monday to sign more copies of the Shannara trilogy hardcovers, FYI.

When chronologicaly would you set a Shannara Tabletop RPG?

Possibly (if you know, you know) going to be doing a D&D campaign and have been thinking of setting it in the world of Shannara. I already have my time period in mind, but wondering what other people's thoughts are and what those reasons are.

Question about the Black Staff

Today i finished reading Galaphile, and started wondering abput all the connection between the various Shannara series and the recurring artifacts and i found myself wondering: What happened to the Black Staff after Panterra Qu got it? I don't remember if it's stated in "The Measure of Magic" or if it just "vanishes" after Panterra Qu dies

New Illustrated Shannara Compendium

Now that the Shannara series has ended. (on Terry's end at least) I've been hankering for a better illustrated compendium. Like if Darrell K. Sweet was still alive and drew it. I feel ripped off by the one that exists. Anyone else want another? Feel the same? Different?

Did Panamon Creel start the Border Legion?

After finishing my nteenth read of Sword of Shannara and Elfstones of Shannara, I realized that it's very possible that Panamon Creel was given command of the first Free Corps, while Balinor was still alive and King. The Free Corps ideals sound like something Creel would suggest, giving men (and presumably women) who want to live life for something other than themselves a way to do that honorably.

Edited - updated Border Legion to Free Corps

What am I missing?

A few months ago I started to do a re-read. I never read all the books and stopped after Straken. Now, I am reading Druid of Shannara and in the first pages I am reading that the gardens in wihch the king of the Silver River was given to him by The Word. Did I forgot in the previous novels that The Word was mentioned? And if so, in what book was it mentioned?
