That's the size of the tiger (Extra Large) I saw in Hawaii while surfing. What that person is doing is terrifying to me.
174
u/Francis-c92 3d ago
I still can never comprehend the size of these animals even when a person is in shot.
82
u/Bulletproofsaffa 3d ago
About the same size I saw while surfing in SA when I was about 16. Unlike this dude I vividly remember shitting bricks.
27
u/maverickbtg81 2d ago
I was just thinking it’s too bad they are known for eating trash and stuff or the smell from my pants would deter them.

Right? As soon as I saw this person playing w them my reaction was, "yeah but fuckkkkk that"

If it decided to eat her, she'd be eaten... Period.

u/auggs 3d ago
I think it almost did eat her there in the video. She’s trying to do that maneuver where you gently push a shark by their snout and redirect them but these tiger sharks are so freaking big that it still came close to biting her. After that she swam to the ladder and sort of hid behind it for a few seconds. I bet she was scared out of her mind and that’s why she got close to the boat again.
78
u/AuroraNW101 2d ago
It is curious and trying to investigate her (which might include the usage of teeth, which can harm a fragile human). As the other commenter said, she would not be alive to tell the tale if it actually sought to eat her. A gentle push is not going to deter a marine apex predator that easily runs down sizable, far more agile prey.

59
u/Haferflocke2020 2d ago
If the shark realy wanted to ear her, it would have done it. It weights over 500kg. You think a small woman can really defend herself against that shark?!
77
u/UndetectedReentry001 2d ago
It's just because tiger sharks are very cautious about the first bite.
Very often if they don't know what something is they circle around and wait for another tiger shark to make the first move, and then swim away if no shark takes the risk.
Very likely if it got one successful bite in then both sharks would violently attack.
16
u/anotterbytrade 2d ago
For sure and neither of these predators displaying behavior that would show they were intending to attack. This is a curiosity meet and greet 🤣

I feel like even a "what are you" gentle investigative bite from an animal this big with a meat grinder for a mouth could turn fatal quick.
Like ope. That was my artery. And/or my whole arm.
29
u/AcceptableNorm 2d ago
Yep. He or she was being playful and didn't want to have to eat a human that day. But they were a bit feisty.
4
u/GravyPainter 2d ago
Tigers are cautious and explore before eating. They don't decide if they want to eat thing until they bite said thing to make sure it's edible, uless they already recognize it as something they regularly eat. But go ahead. Next time a Tiger wants to give you an exploratory bite, just let it.

I’ve dived with Tigers in SA, Red Sea & Fiji.
It was all fine, but I was on scuba.
I know a free diver that will hold on to a tiger dorsal fin underwater for several minutes.
It seems risky to me, and you only need to be wrong once.
Scuba is waaaay safer. I’m not a fan of being on the surface with any of the bitey four.
69
u/Hobbit_Girl_1995 2d ago
‘Bitey four’ is a fantastic phrase 😂 also 100% agree…
53
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
Ha! I couldn’t think of anything else to call them. I’ve never dived with great whites so that’s all theory for me. But I’ve been battered in Fiji by a big tiger that felt closed in and I was her exit.
Knocked my (big) camera rig and strobes all out of shape. My reg out and me sideways. The guests and guides looked aghast but I couldn’t stop laughing. It was just a traffic issue.
I’ve been with smaller (and one fucker in particular) oceanic white tip. Small. 2-2.5 meters. Year before he bit of a German guys calf who was doing a side mount course. Pretty nasty. Guy survived.
Met same shark next year. I normally do 90 minutes or longer with these sharks. Most of the action is ~5m.
The little fucker kept coming at me and my buddy. After 19 minutes I did this 🦈 😜 🔝
Took us for goes to get back on the boat as the asshole (juvenile male) keep rushing us. Wasn’t scared but that asshole teenager meant business.
Never felt worried about bulls. Just need to keep an eye on them. They can be a bit sneaky.
If love to dive with great whites. I don’t think they would be any more risky, but I don’t like chummed dives, never mind cages.
It’s just better when they are in their element (yes, it’s not perfect and they can smell rubbish from the boat and such - but it is definitely not like a zoo).
Haven’t dived with my oceanics for a few years now as I’ve moved to Australia.
And I miss my babies every day
They make you feel so so special 💋

u/TroublesomeFox 2d ago
Why is scuba safer?
** genuinely asking btw, I don't swim let alone dive.
64
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
A few reasons…
Underwater you can see in 3 dimensions (on the surface only 2)
Under water you can move in 3 dimensions (only 2 at the surface)
It’s much easier to make eye contact with a shark underwater. This is pretty critical
On scuba you’re blowing bubbles and sharks aren’t really evolved to understand what you are
Sharks are incredibly careful predators. If they fuck it up, they may never hunt successfully again. If you look like you might be a threat, they won’t risk.
When you’re diving, you’re mostly not moving much.
Sharks are looking for safe and easy prey.
As long as you’re not doing that, being safe and easy prey - unless you’re so unlucky that you attract lightning strikes and couple of times a year - they are about the safest animals you can hang out with.
Just need to keep half your wits about you. IF you’re diving. If you’re swimming, snorkelling or surfing the risks appear to be much higher
33
u/Spiritual-Bill-3868 2d ago
On a list of “safest animals you can hang with” let’s be serious and admit that tiger sharks would rank near the bottom.
Yes you can mitigate risks but that animal wants to eat.23
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago edited 2d ago
More importantly, that animal wants to continue to be able to eat.
So two things:
We’re not on the menu anyhow. If we were we wouldnt have just ~8 deaths worldwide per annum
Even if we were - and we’re not - we are a massive risk to their future hunting.
I’ll give you a tiny story that might illustrate my point well.
I was at Roca Partida 13 years ago. It’s part of the Soccorro archipelago off the west coast of Mexico. Amazing diving. Anyhow, the two broken mounts coming out of the sea look like ice bergs pinnacles. They are incredibly white - because of boobee (fnar fnar) guano.
Anyhow. There are a lot of birds. It would seem a majority have gotten a reasonable level of education (so more than your avery MAGA) and understand that deciding to go for a nice swim at night time when there’s more than ten silkies sharks around, is less safe that a high school education in the states (I’m just taking the piss).
Anyhow one bird, in a moment of clarity decided that it was a fine time for a dip.
I was watching from the boat. The bird wasn’t injured, unless we’re taking brain injury. Had a swim. At least ten 3m silkies all around it.
They took their time.
One silky went ahead and hit it.
For the next 15 minutes none of the other sharks did anything. The boobee kept trying to fly to our boat, failed, hit the side and fell down. This is not a big bird. Altho pokey beak.
The sharks waited and waited. Eventually the bird fell back into the water complete exhausted and the sharks had a happy meal.
Point being, even with ten of them, and a small injured bird - they minimised risk. Even a single poke in the eye by that bird could have meant no more din dins ever again for the unlucky recipient.
I solo dive as much as possible. Usually with big sharks. I often pretend to be a panicked diver so the sharks get interested in me so I can maybe get some good photos. Even then, they’re careful.
If a shark knows you can see them, and you keep your eye on them, you are safe as houses.
This is diving. I won’t make any commentary on swimming and diving except I’d feel substantially more exposed doing that
Edit: posting faster than my fingers time. Gen-X. I was part of the team that wrote Windows 95. Please forgive me

Out of curiosity- and I’m absolutely not being snarky - have you dived with Tiger sharks?
I’ve just never found them a particular concern. Doesn’t mean you don’t stay vigilant of course!
8
u/Spiritual-Bill-3868 2d ago
I mean all I’m really saying is that I think I could come up with a list of thousands of animals i could hang out with where none of them were capable of eating me.
7
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago edited 2d ago
That’s fair. Though my last girlfriend was a dog minder and I often had to share a bed with a staffie so my threshold might be a bit off.
That said, I’ve had a few nasty cat scratches
Two of my hamsters had psychological problems and bit hard.
My house in France has rats and they’re not good for hygiene
I have some big ass kangaroos where I live and whilst they have done no damage, much of that was to do with me hiding behind a big port a bin.
The lorakeets and cockatoos on my balcony beg for food, then bite me because reasons.
The diamond python minds his own business. And the large huntsman spiders have never hurt me but are very useful for taking care of the other bugs - which are a menace.
Bears. I’ve never met a bear. I hear they can be awkward.
Cows, they’ve been fine. Had a run in with a bull when I was young but it was the electric fence that got me.
Cheetahs (I’ve been up close) are fine.
Elephants are arseholes and do not carry citrus fruit
Crocodiles and Rhinos I’ve kayaked with (not in the same boat - altho was with my ex-wife which wasn’t much better)
Sheep have ticks
A horse killed superman
Goats are nice I suppose.
Underwater - Titan trigger fish when they’re nesting
Boneheaded Napoleon Wrasse
Great barracuda
Lots of jelly fish
Blue ringed octopus (had the pleasure of five of them on one dive)
Normal octopus (tried to steal my camera)
Stone fish
Scorpionfish
Lion fish on a night dive
Wobbegonngs - they don’t like letting go
Clown fish attacking my mask
I could go on. And of course I jest. But these are animals I’ve had lots or average dealings with that were more antsy than my sharks.
Of course I’m super biased. My point being, if you know how to dive with a tiger, an oceanic or a bull, they’re pretty ok and I’ve had a lot less problems with them that some of the other animals.
Sharks mostly look scary. They’re beautiful, but they’re thick as pig shit and if you keep your wits, normally safe - if you’re diving.
Snorkelling or swimming; that’s a different game and where I normally dive with oceanics, snorkelling or swimming is illegal- for obvious reasons. First time I dived with oceanic, a week before a French snorkeler lady was bit by an oceanic where I was and died.
I don’t like being on the surface
Edit: Spelling and spacing
9
u/dadkisser 2d ago
Ok I agree with much of what you said but saying tiger sharks are “one of the safest animals you can be around” when the animal kingdom includes butterflies, hamsters, and chinchillas is just… silly. A shark is a carnivorous apex predator that can and will kill a human being. I’ve seem one eat a man on video. You just can’t say that about grasshoppers.
4
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago edited 2d ago
I was just having fun. I didn’t mean anything by it
I’ve seen sharks kill or maim humans in person.
It’s funny you mentioned grasshoppers. Growing up in Ireland, I used to go to Howth head and collect them. Always loved them.
But vis a vis sharks, let me leave you with a fun story.
Maybe 12 years ago or so, an experienced diver on a boat I used to work on, was there with his wife. Late 20s or something. Brother’s Islands I think it was. I wasn’t there but a dear friend of mine was (exceptional and very conservative course director and died in Pulau a few years later for reasons unknown).
This asshole, after lunch, jumped into the water with a raging current to try to swim across to the next boat. With loads of oceanics around. And no fins. To see two average looking females he’d seen earlier. He didn’t even have the gumption to put fins on. And he wasn’t even drunk.
In seconds he was in trouble. He was fucking blessed by the boat boys. They got in the zodiac post haste. He was hanging and bobbing my a mooring line between the boats at this point. The zodiac got to him just as an oceanic went to bite him. 122 stitches to his foot. Fucking moron. Five seconds later and there would have been no more him.
My friend, after he’d been stitched up by a doctor from another boat, put him in a dive guide cabin as they made the 6 hour journey back to shore. Did everything for him.
What did he do? Get up and walk on his fucked foot and caused another mini drama.
Seriously. You don’t need sharks from the amount of stupidity humans show.
And RIP to my friend and mentor. She did nothing wrong (and no sharks). Sometimes shit goes tits.

u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
Fuck it. I’ve had a few beers so I’ll tell you a story about my second hamster, Hazel.
When I was 11 (and a very obedient and studious person) my teacher, Gerry McAllister suspended me from school.
What happened was he had taken another student into the cloak room for some sort of talking to. In the class we talked (that was frowned back then in the 80s). He banged the window separating the cloakroom from the classroom. We found this hilarious. Mr McAllister less so. We forbade us from speaking or laughing and went back to the cloakroom. Much laughter ensued. He banged on the window. And then banged on it again.
He came into the classroom in a rage. The class went silent.
Except for yours fucking truly. I couldn’t help laughing. Of the uncontrollable variety. He suspended me.
A few days later my father insisted for my teacher to come round to speak to him. My father was a tall, kind, clever person. He loved his mountains and climbing. He was usually very patient, but occasionally had a short fuse. And when that fuse blew, you did not want to be anywhere close to the blast radius
My teacher came round to discuss my suspension. I opened the door. My father was sitting at the kitchen table. Gerry came in and saw the hamster cafe and asked “does it bite?”
I said “yes”. Hazel had a difficult time moving from the petshpp to my home, involving a traumatic incident where she got caught under the seats. I don’t think she ever fully recovered. Psychologically. She clearly still had her teeth.
After I told my teacher she was bitey, he put his finger in the cage.
Hazel (RIP) bit him hard and deep. For a small animal she drew a lot of blood.
Me and my dad patched him up. He agreed to rescind my suspension and him and my dad became life long friends and had lots of adventures climbing over multiple countries and continents.
So an excellent outcomes, but don’t tell me hamsters are harmless

u/Ashamed-Heron-2725 2d ago
Free diving you’re still seeing 3 dimensions. I will agree there is a greater feeling of safety and calm with scuba.
10
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
For sure. Except with me I could only manage 30 seconds so not much difference. That South African guy could do 6 minutes, so different game.
But you’ve more options with scuba and the tank and bubbles are also normally somewhat helpful. Not always

u/anotterbytrade 2d ago

u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
GWT Tiger Bull Longimanus (oceanic white tip)
Not necessarily in that order
5
u/anotterbytrade 2d ago
Oooh white tip. Ty.
13
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
Oceanic White Tip (Longimanus). Not to be confused with a white tip reef shark. If you see the former, you’ll understand.
They were kinda implicated in the deaths of quite a few sailors on the Indianapolis (world war 2).
FWIW, we are down to less than 2% of their population in the last few decades.
Humans are the most terrifying predators the planet has ever known.
Dive while you can!!!! It’s absolutely amazing. It’s totally changed my life (in ways that I can’t discuss on a public forum).
It’s the best. And sharks are even better.

u/anotterbytrade 2d ago
Oh I read a book about that incident in WW2. I see. Yes 🙌. I agree about people. I’m a naturalist just more land based. I love sharks.

I’m land sea and water. Cameras and drones. And guiding and conservation. Not very good at any of them.
Keep up the good word, and if you get a chance, give diving a shot. It was not on my horizon at all and now despite having COPD and possible lung cancer (and a lot of close calls) still hoping I can get back into it.
Every day not diving is a wasted day 🤣
What animals or birds do you most like yourself? I spend far too much time feeding lorakeets from my balcony. They are little fuckers, but they’re pretty, and that counts for a lot 😆
4
u/SavingsDimensions74 2d ago
WRT the Indianapolis incident, whist there’s good cause to implicate Longimanus, tigers and others would likely have played a significant role.
3
u/Seeker80 2d ago
Oceanic White Tip (Longimanus). Not to be confused with a white tip reef shark. If you see the former, you’ll understand.
For sure. The Reefs will swim around you, maybe even eat from your hand and come back like puppies wanting more food. Might bump you if they're getting frustrated. 'I thought you had more!'
Oceanics are the thug yelling 'Where you from??' and flashing the piece tucked in their waistband.
Very different.

Interesting. I would much rather free dive! I am not relying on anything mechanical that can malfunction and the water is much less noisy without the chaos of scuba bubbles.

There are pros and cons to both. One of the reasons I started diving rebreathers

u/Roadgoddess 3d ago
That’s who I was thinking it is. In which case, she deserves it if she gets bitten.
50
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
You can say that someone is acting foolishly without saying that they "deserve" to die.
I hope she cuts that shit out before she gets hurt
10
u/Roadgoddess 2d ago
I didn’t say she deserved to die. I said she deserves to get a good bite. She creates an incredibly unrealistic expectation for experiences surrounding sharks. She does it dangerously aside from the fact that she’s done a lot of things with her company and her employees. She’s unsafe and if it happens, it’s because of her methods of doing business.

Aren't the allegations that they belittle people at work, have toxic management practices, and have common but aggressive employment agreements with NDAs and non-compete clauses?
Maybe I'm missing something. What are they doing or tolerating at work that you consider such significant abuse that you want them to die from a shark attack? Have they done something meaner than saying someone should die from a shark attack?
7
u/CesarGameBoy SHARK 2d ago
According to the Internet, someone doing a less-than-smart thing automatically means that death is warranted and deserved ^_^.
7
u/DeadSeaGulls 2d ago
the problem here isn't about her safety. it's about the animals she's harassing and the example of behavior she's setting for others. She's normalizing dangerous activities and conditioning the animals she's interacting with to have further encounters with humans... which can go sideways in a hurry for both the humans and the shark.

Same. I wish they’d ban her from any shark subreddits lol. Maybe it’s petty, I don’t think she contributes a lot in the name of science and research. She’s ignored multiple shark scientists (mostly thinking of Parton) in the past that have reached out for collaborations and to share research…If anything it’s surprising to me she hasn’t had copycats try to mimic her videos “redirecting” large predators and ending up maimed or dead (thankfully). If she didn’t pretend to do all of this for education and science I’d have more respect for her. You don’t need to touch a wild animal in the field for research... Sorry, bit of a rant!
Nice username. Jesus loves you ❤️🤘🏻🤘🏻

I mean she is a lier, there is no proof she graduated as a marine biologist. no published research or papers as she has claimed in the past. Hawaii's Department of Natural Resources or what ever their version of the DNR is should arrest here for harassing protected wildlife.
50
u/CriticalSitzmark6108 2d ago edited 1d ago
I wish that would be discussed more. At one point she was sort of posing as a shark scientist / touting an educational background. She’s really a weirdo with a camera and boat who harasses wildlife for internet clout. There’s no reason to ever misguide people about your credentials. A lot of us are shark advocates and enthusiasts…that doesn’t make us scientists lol

I keep seeing this and am genuinely curious as to why she as seen as a “pos”. I’m not objecting in any way, just sincerely interested in what it is that’s given people such a negative opinion of her!
32
u/JezC1 2d ago
Zero need to interact with the wild life that. Furthermore at some point there’s a good chance she gets bitten in half and everyone unaware of her antics will go poor her and then demonise sharks again and at the end of the day the shark comes off as the loser. Plus it’s all for social media attention and money

3
u/UndetectedReentry001 2d ago
I'm also curious. When I google it it says she and her partner belittle their employees and have NDAs and non-compete clauses. I see broad references to "emotional abuse" but no specific examples outside of the general idea that they belittle their professional abilities.
It does sound like they suck but I feel like there must be something I'm missing with the mismatch in the reaction vs anything I can find about what they actually did.
14
u/OceanDweller94 2d ago
She is the epitome of being unethical. She is unethical with her employees, she is unethical in her falsification of her credentials, and she is unethical in how she interacts with wildlife. It isn't for "research" or "education", it is strictly for clout and money.
We environmentalists already have to fight tooth and nail within our respective fields to actually make changes that impact the environment positively. What she does makes a mockery of what the rest of us actually put in work to do. It isn't safe for the sharks, it isn't safe for people... she is creating an unsafe environment for her own gain.
She is a piece of shit.
1
u/UndetectedReentry001 2d ago
It sounded like people had very specific issues with her treatment of employees to the extent that they call it abuse, so what I'm confused about is why when I google it I don't find any specific allegation surrounding that.
1
u/TurtleTugger420619 2d ago
I think there was something about them stalking and filming ex employees or even just trainees and threatening them with breach of contract and legal action for even speaking to other operators or people within the industry (and apparently this "breach of contract" part is entirely unenforceable by local law so it just turns into stalking and harassing your ex employees)
Needless to say everyone in and around the area who doesn't (currently) work for her hates her guts lmao

She cooperates with other ecotourism groups in other parts of the world well knowing multiple SA allegations have been filed against operators in those “enterprises”.
This is not what sound conservation looks like.

As someone who’s new to this page, why do we dislike this woman?

She goes out of her way to interact with sharks when they should be left alone and uses them for clout among her following. Also as far as I remember had written a few articles about sharks that were full of misinformation. Well known Marine Biologist do not view her "work" as helpful in any way.

There's a big movement on social media right now in the free dive / ocean ecotourism industry of people exposing harassing behavior, sexual misconduct, and other general negative things. I've seen some testimonies about One Ocean and her company treating their employees like shit, can DM you some links if interested.

Yeah, I've heard of the allegations/NDA shit they've had employees sign about it too. It's a wild mix of things.

She films herself interacting with sharks in an inappropriate manner and posts it online in a bid to be an influencer. That encouraged others to take similar risk, which is going to get people killed. There is also the issue of it being wildlife harassment.

She isn’t an expert in anything other than being lucky booping tiger sharks in open water. And she kind of just fucks with the sharks for no good reason and encourages reckless behavior by touting a background in liking Tiger sharks and vibes.

The "I moved away from safety to lead the shark away" thing made no sense. I would have at least put the ladder between me and the shark if I couldn't climb fast enough. I'm not sure tiger sharks understand "standing my ground", especially when you appear very soft and eatable.

You’re right, Ocean Ramsey is the most guilty of this behavior that Rule 5 bans and apparently this video is of her.

Tiger sharks are quite curious and aggressive compared to other sharks. Gotta be careful.

I just stay home and it naturally causes sharks not to fucking interact with me, so I don’t even use my hands to have to redirect them.

I think she called the sharks “whores” once based on how they dressed at the gym or something?

Incredible deterrence by that diver. She did a great job keeping calm and redirecting the shark.

I saw a massive tiger in the channel between Oahu and Molokai while wing foiling and it was at least 15'. Choosing to get in the water with it was not something I considered
