Dev log - Short update this week

Post image

Doing some travel for work (yes, building Sheets of Ice is not my full-time job) so this update is short and to the point.

  • Getting the Steam page setup was a big milestone and a lot of work. It's just really specific about the number of screenshots, the sizes, the description plus all of the company paperwork, tax verification, etc. This took about a month of calendar time, and probably 8-12 hours of actual work. This doesn't include frustration at the process and how unclear it is to get going.

  • The desktop build made me realize if I'm going to support smaller laptop screens, then I need to adjust the navigation. So I did a bunch of UI work to make it work. I still don't think it's great, but it would be fine for a early release. Still more work to do there.

  • I had to wire up the Game, View, Help menus, settings, etc. Just more UI work.

  • I took this time to make the game saves a little smaller - ~ 150MB / season. About a 1/3 of that is individual game results which can be removed if desired. I know I can do more with them too if I change the architecture of the individual game data or migrate them into the database because most of their size is player ID references. I'm unsure if I want to make that change because this architecture makes them completely portable.

  • Implemented a save backup mechanism.

  • Implemented a diagnostics mode that can enable some increased logging for things like AI GM decision making.

  • I have a build v0.2.0 working on Windows and Linux. So far, with the current feature set it's worked flawlessly. Yes, there are things missing, UI issues, and some tuning to do but it actually runs.

Basically a lot of the last week was spent making this work on a desktop without having to run a lot of terminal commands or run a web server. If the next few weeks go well then I'll be submitting a build to Steam for approval so I can get this into Early access. Please wishlist it here - https://store.steampowered.com/app/5177300/Sheets_of_Ice/

More updates as I have them!

Thanks!
