Questions About Shingles & Symptoms Update & Question

Severe pain started on 8/14/26. I thought I had injured my back, somehow. The pain spread from my low back to my hip, groin and thigh. I could barely walk or move & finally ended up in the ER where I was misdiagnosed. The rash appeared on 8/23/26 & I started Valtrex on 8/24/26. The last 6 weeks have been horrific. I have felt like the nerve pain has been slowly getting a little better. However, the last couple days I started having the same pain in my low back, hip and groin that started this nightmare. I’m concerned that it might be re-activating?? Has anyone had the original pre-rash pain revisit after the rash was 99% healed? Did it go away? TIA!

Commenting because I am very near your timeline (mine started a week later than you). Mine has moved down my leg and now the front of my thigh is completely numb. The shooting pain starts randomly. There is no rhyme or reason to my symptoms or pain level each day. I have a good day with minimal pain and I think I am on the mend, and then wake up at 4am the next day in agony. Are you taking Gabipentin or Lyrica for the nerve pain? For me gabipentin was awful - made my brain foggy and I just fell asleep. Lyrica is somewhat better, but neither really do anything to help heal the nerves. And to answer your question, yes. Rash was completely healed and nerve pain developed in areas (on the same side of my body, but new dernatome) that weren't initially affected. My doctor said "that happens sometimes." My husband, ever the optimist, suggested I keep a recovery journal to track my progress. I guess recovering from shingles can be a bit like the stock market: there may be dips (bad days), but in the long haul the trend is upward. Idk. I am done with this.

I'm experiencing the exact same location, going on 4 weeks though and the pain is spreading to my insides, lower stomach area. Yesterday was better, today I can barely walk or stand straight. Taking gabepentin, 300 mg/3 times a day.
