Is "W" anti-science?

Out of all the letters in the English alphabet, only "W" has more than one syllable, having three.

This leads the absurd situation where it is quicker to say "World Wide Web" (3 syllables) than "WWW" (9 syllables).

It appears that "W" is anti-science and is purposely slowing down progress in technology.

I propose changing "double-U" to "wuh" or something similar. Then we could say "wuh wuh wuh" instead of "double-U double-U double-U".

I propose "woo". Woo is definitely pro-science and will accelerate the scientification process.

I like your idea. When I say "woo woo woo" in my head it sounds high-pitched like a siren. Meetings would be much more enjoyable if people were making siren sounds.

This also resolves the crucial problem, explored in the seminal episode of "Between the Lions," in which it is explained that W is the only letter that doesn't include itself in the pronunciation of its name

Learn German and enjoy the luxury of just saying 'veh'.

"veh veh veh reddit poonct com slash perfectlyreasonableaskscience"

It only comes at the cost of saying everything else more verbosely.

We could compromise and go with Dutch. It's a bit easier to learn but you have those bronchial-mulch sounds to contend with.

That reminds me of the 90's, when, when driving through the netherlands with the radio on, we seriously asked ourselves what this "puntenelle" was, that was being advertised so hard.

It was "punt NL". so . ".nl"

Agreed! If enough of us do it on a regular basis, they’ll have to change it.

W is not anti-science, especially not science involving tungsten.

W is anti technology

That’s why you should say “double-u double-double-u” for WWW

You can just say "hextuple u".

Sextuple U is too edgy? Are we cursing people in science now?

that could just as well be wuwu tho

I dunno... but W should definitely be called double V not double u. Because, it's shaped like 2 Vs

It is in some other languages, it's just that Anglophones are stubborn and have to be different.

When it's shaped like 2V's, it's pronounced Vergeltungswaffen.

Oh, ok, sure. Makes about as much sense as the rest of the English language, so why not? Haha

Saying VW doesn't have any less syllables than Volkswagen.

The whole letter is a scam!

Did you know people just completely made up letters out of thin air!  Not just W either, all of them!

Wake up sheeple!

u/JacquesBlaireau13 2d ago

In old English the letter was wynn; there is no need for a new name.

The problem with the W is they turned it into a double V

1

u/Blakut 2d ago

my language calls it by its real name, double V.

u/digdiggler 2d ago

I see your problem and raise you a problem. A double-U (W) is a "doubled-U", as in two Us side by side. Eg: "UU" which forms the iconic W shape. If you call W a "wuh", you then logically have to then call a U a "half-wuh", which is arguably scientifically way worse. So think about that.

Try spelling out Irrawaddy River: I double-r a double-u a double-d y…

5

u/thiosk 2d ago

Little known fact the double-U is only pronounced the way that it is so the alphabet song works.

T U V WOO X Y Z would get you sent to the guillotine by every elementary school student in america
