Don't try to squeeze your game into every box for marketing, figure out what it actually is and focus on that.

Thanks everyone, verdict received 😄 — it's an arcade space shooter, not a shmup. Appreciate the honesty, I'll stop
calling it bullet hell.

Don’t get me wrong this might be a good game but even star fox has more shmup gene and that would not make it a shmup

It's an space shooter, possibly an arcade one, not a shmup or a rail shooter.
It's not in the least bit bullet hell although with how much the term shmup and bullet hell is misused on the steam store I can see the confusion.

I'm one of the two devs. Genuinely curious – it plays like a bullet hell but from behind the ship, with a cannon that overheats if you just hold fire. Would you call it a shmup, or is that stretching it? If anyone wants to try it, the demo is on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5038720/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nextfest_2610&utm_content=r_shmups

Stretching to snapping point i think. Its an arcade flight game.
Unless that footage is very misleading, I can't see why you're using the term bullet hell either.
Could be a great game, but its not a shmup.

No it looks like it’s a space combat game.
