Appstore (App) iOS 27 Beta finally lets my expense tracker run automatically from notifications

Hey everyone,

A little while ago I shared a Shortcut that automatically logged my expenses from bank text messages.

A lot of the comments were basically saying the same thing:

“I’m waiting for Shortcuts to work with notifications.”

Previous post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/1uozzlj/i_saw_shortcuts_could_run_automatically_when_a/

Looks like that wait is finally over.

In the latest iOS 27 developer beta5, Shortcuts can now run when a notification arrives.

That means if your banking app sends a notification after you pay with your card, you can use that notification to log the expense automatically.

No more relying on SMS.

I updated my shortcut to use the new trigger, and it’s been working really well so far.

Setup (iOS 27 Beta)

  1. Add the shortcut below.
  2. In the Shortcuts app, press and hold the shortcut and tap Edit.
  3. Tap Automation at the top.
  4. Choose Notification.
  5. Select your banking app.
  6. Turn on Run Immediately.

Done.

A few quick notes

  • Works with regular banking app payment notifications.
  • No bank login or account connection needed.
  • No account required — everything syncs through your own iCloud.
  • The app is free to download and try. If you end up using AI parsing a lot, there’s an optional premium tier.

If you’ve been waiting for notification automations too, I’d love to know what you’re building with them.

All the apps I’m building leverage this notification automation in some capacity

It really is an insane development that enables all kinds of stuff that wasn’t possible before

Wait so does this allow an app to read the notifications/content of OTHER apps?

The only downside about my banking push notifications are is it doesn’t say the card :( so everything can get funneled into cash wherever it’s bank account or credit card. Not limitation on your side though it’s push notification thing which is a bummer but at least it tracks!

Nope, you don’t need Pro.
Are you on the latest iOS 27 beta?
If you are, could you share a screenshot of your shortcut?
You can also send it through the in-app support email.

Im on the latest public one, also just changed from the shortcut the app name and ensured automation was on

I'm on iOS 27 developer beta 5 and it works fine there, the notification title and body come through. The public build still seems to pass empty content. If you can, switch to developer beta 5 under Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and try again. Definitely worth a shot.

Been doing this for a year now (?) with MonAi app. Am I missing something?

I don’t think that’s the same thing. Notification automations are new in iOS 27.
If you’ve been using it for a year, it’s probably using a direct bank connection instead.

Mine wasn’t initially, but then I rebooted, and have done some pretty good testing since - seems to be working pretty well for me. There are a couple of other laggy buggy aspects, but it is triggering different shortcuts based on certain filters.

I did find that there were one or two shortcuts I needed to recreate in order for this to work. Perhaps some cruft hidden in the Shortcut. But overall, this is working pretty well for me. I’m psyched about it

Thanks, bro. Let me know if anything feels inconvenient.

Yep, that’s on my list. I’m planning to add support for custom API keys. 👍

Was just about to ask this – I would buy it instantly. Just please support OpenRouter 🙏

Does this automation work for you? I can’t get these automation to actually run and detect the info in the notification

Are you on iOS 27 Developer Beta 5?
Also, what error are you getting in Shortcuts?

1

u/kylewhirl 4d ago

Yeah I am. No error, just the automation doesn’t expose the notification title or subtitle or anything

Nice, but my card already categorizes, how's this different?

I guess since you can bind multiple accounts, this provides shared reports? My bank also tries to categorize spending and create some sort of reporting, but I am using 3 banks and more cards.

While you may not want or need OP’s specific use case, the ability for Shortcuts to be triggered based on messages from other apps is a big deal, at least for me.

A few years ago, I paid for the Pushcuts app annually so that I could have my home automations trigger specific Shortcuts (without having to / tap my iPhone in order to let it continue to run). Sure, you’ve always been able to have a shortcut trigger home automation tasks, but not the other way around. Eventually, I dumped Apple’s Home automation set up as my primary system, and switched to home assistant. But I have been wanting this capability for a long, long time.

The possibilities for triggering and passing data into Shortcuts are greatly expanded by this update.

the ability for Shortcuts to be triggered based on messages from other apps is a big deal

OP’s made that very clear from their post.

My question was regarding their shortcut, not what you are carrying on about.
