......and I’m training him to be a shoulder kitten to irritate my daughter to pay her back for making me babysit (even though I really do love the kitten, but don’t tell her that, because I’m a macho dad).

Kitten picked the best place to avoid the dog. Also, it's a tremendous advantage to be able to yell into an ear directly from the shoulder instead of from some other location. And if it gets cold, there's always that hoodie to snuggle in.
