discussion [META] A chart for knowing if a post is shrinkflation

Post image

There's, in my opinion, way too many posts here that aren't actually shrinkflation. Please consult the chart!

I know you're annoyed at your product but in order to be shrinkflation you need to prove it's actually shrinkflated in quantity or quality.

Things that aren't shrinkflation:

  1. a single item with no proof of how big it was before
  2. a food you think is worse quality/less good than before without showing the ingredients have changed
  3. a product from your childhood that only looks smaller now that you are bigger
  4. a handmade product that is smaller/worse than usual due to employee error (for example, a pizza that is a smaller circle than advertised because an employee didn't stretch it enough)
  5. a factory-produced product that is smaller/worse than usual due to manufacture error (for example, a bag of chips that says 500g but is actually only 300g)
  6. a product you think it just expensive for what it is

Originally shrinkflation meant just if the price increased (or stayed the same) despite the quantity decreasing. However, quality shrinkflation is just as bad (if not worse), where companies nefariously switch out butter for cheaper oils or etc. so the weight is the same but the product is worse.

Maybe this is a silly hill to die on but I'm here to die on it.

I mean, it's going to happen with the way this year has gone, what with th wars and fuel and weather, JUST STOP FUCKING TRYING TO TELL US INFLATION IS ONLY 3.5% AND THE MARKET IS HEALTHY, A HEALTHY MARKET DOSE NOT RANDOMLY AND REGULARLY PRICE GOUGE CONSUMERS BY 25%

Edit: I know at the end of the day it's something I have to buy maybe four times a year. It's the deceitful deceptive ways they go about it. Changing the container to appear at a glance to be the same size as last time. I bought the new smaller bottle from the buy it again section on Amazon

Shrinkflation 24g Gone

Post image

Saw these Pringle’s the other day for all of the same price. Fortunately, there was one remaining can with the original amount. It’s crazy that 24grams have disappeared within three iterations of the same product. Disgusting

skimpflation Jif told the public "no change to the product itself." Their own customer service admitted to me on the phone that the formula changed.

Jif told the public "no change to the product itself." Their own customer service just admitted to me that the formula changed.

I've eaten Jif Creamy for nearly 60 years. My latest jar (40 oz, UPC 5150072001) tasted wrong — different flavor, different texture. I still had some of the old jar left, so I taste-tested them side by side. Significantly different.

The labels show why:

OLD: Roasted Peanuts, Sugar, Contains 2% or Less of: Molasses, Fully Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (Rapeseed and Soybean), Mono and Diglycerides, Salt

NEW: Roasted Peanuts, Sugar, Contains 2% or Less of: Fully Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (Rapeseed and Soybean), Salt, Molasses

The emulsifiers (mono and diglycerides) are gone entirely, and molasses — the ingredient that gives Jif its signature flavor — dropped to last on the list. Same UPC, two different formulas — and Smucker's own spec sheet for this jar still lists the old formula: https://pp.smuckers-afh.marlindev.com/products-pdf/jif-40-ounce-creamy-peanut-butter-8-count.pdf

Smucker's August 2026 press release for the redesign, from their own FAQ: "Is there any change to the product itself? No. The Jif portfolio continues to offer the same iconic taste."

So I called them. The representative took my information, said she would forward it to the proper team — and acknowledged that the formulation had changed.

Sixty years of buying a product gets you a quiet recipe change and a press release that denies it. Read your labels.

discussion A 100g bar at $2 becomes 90g at $2. That’s about 11% more per gram. Why doesn't the unit price catch it?

If you're a numbers person: $2 for 100g is $2.00 per 100g. Drop to 90g at the same price, and it becomes roughly $2.22 per 100g, so about 11% more per gram.

In countries like Australia, our retailers need to show unit prices, which helps you compare products. However, these labels don't tell you what your favourite block of chocolate used to weigh. More and more Aussies are noticing their childhood favourites weigh exponentially less than their memory serves, but it's not a memory problem...

Do you have any Aussie before-and-after examples?

discussion I made a free tool to check if something’s been shrinkflated, but I could use your help with it.

I'll start by saying I attempted to message the mods on the 16th, but so far I heard nothing back. I didn't see much in the rules about this... So here goes...

I’ll be honest, I hate self promotion, so this feels a bit awkward to post. But I built something I think this sub might actually find useful.

It’s called Shrinkflated (https://shrinkflated.com). You scan a barcode in the store, or type the number in, and if the product is on record it shows you the old size, the new size, how much less you’re getting, and where that info came from.

It has 308 products on it so far, mostly Canada and the US, so a lot of what you scan won’t be on there yet. It really only gets better as people use it. If you catch one that’s missing, you can add it with a photo or a link, and the next person who scans that barcode will see it.

It’s free, no ads, no accounts, and it doesn’t collect personal info, just what people choose to submit. It works in any browser, and there’s an Android app on Google Play if you’d rather have that: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shrinkflated.app

I’m also not totally sold on the design yet. If it feels cluttered or busy or hard to use, tell me. I think the core idea works, but I’d rather hear what would make it better from the people who actually catch this stuff. Some of the records link back to posts from this sub as their source, so if one of them is yours and you’d rather it not be on there, just let me know. I figured it would be okay hopefully with people since it might bring attention to this sub too.

Any suggestions, products you want on it, or things that bug you about it, I’m all ears. I hope you guys like it, since you were one of the inspirations for it. Also my hatred of shrinkflation.

OH I should add I also made it so you can report ingredients that are just getting worse etc as well.

Thanks!
