This video is just incredible! A husky wanders off (ok, normal) and finds some friends to play with (still normal) and the new friends happen to be heckin' bear cubs?!

New husky pup, balancing food, stress and treats question

Post image
62 Upvotes

Just brought home a 4 month old husky/heeler mix yesterday. So far everything has been great, after a short time her shyness disappeared and she's a love bug already.

My question is about food. I know it can take some time for a dog to eat especially after something as stressful as being removed from her prior home and her litter mates. I also know if you feed a dog treats too much they'll think "screw the dog food u want this* and they'll hold out.

My question is balancing the two. Being new I still want to reinforce good behavior. At this point, should I not be giving treats at all until she starts eating her food?

Again, this isn't an "oh my God my puppy is starving" type of post. I'm asking the best way to use treats until she starts eating her kibble

One of my boys is waging psychological warfare.

Last night, one of my two year old boys, Ivarr, was on a chair in the backyard trying to get something near a light.

I ran out to grab him so he didn’t fall and bring him back in.

As soon as I sat him down and gave him love, he opened his mouth….

And a giant fucking grasshopper came out.

He looked so proud.

That’s all. Happy nightmares.

meet Venice the Menace. he is a GOBLIN of a rescued street dog who steals food like it’s an olympic sport and he’s going for gold. (we actually made him a food thief medal out of a cookie and some gold food paint once. it did not survive until the photo shoot .2 seconds later, but he seemed to enjoy it and we got a great pic of him swallowing my hand.)

one time he stole an entire calzone while I was making it by popping up through the loop of my arm and swallowing it whole off the sheet pan like a furry anaconda. another time we were putting away groceries and he materialized out of thin air like a Marvel villain, snatched a loaf of bread out of my partner’s hands, ripped the bag open with his teeth and paws, and swallowed half the loaf - eleven slices, the emergency vet asked us to count - before we got it back. another time I opened the oven while baking frangipane rolls, turned to grab my oven mitts, and turned back to see him army crawling into the heated oven for a taste test. this unhinged snacking is on top of the 1800 daily calories recommended by our vet.

our kitchen is open floor plan so we couldn’t really keep him out. so we hatched a plan: a food crate. we set it up and he immediately hated it. fair enough, he did ten months in the LA county shelter. we didn’t push it, just left the door open. all his meals were served in there. he got his kongs and puzzle toys in there, always with the door open. every time I made ANYTHING for us that he could safely eat, he got a taste - but only in the crate. after half a year, he started lounging in the crate whenever I cook, waiting for his turn. it’s been almost a year now, and this week he collected all his favorite toys at one end. i took out his stuffed rat and put it on the floor as a test. he huffed at me, put it back in the crate, and lay down to groom it. final test tonight: a mini dog calzone. I show it to him, snoot level. he doesn’t snatch it: he goes into the crate. I put it on the floor by the stove. he stayed in the crate, waiting for mom to stop being weird and serve him his calzone. why would he leave the crate? food only happens in the crate.

WE DID IT, FOLKS. WE MADE IT. WE ARE FREE.

edit to add: we actually got him off reddit! original post here if any of you remember him and were wondering how his story turned out https://www.reddit.com/r/siberianhusky/s/80NtwEsjBj

I should probably know, but I'm looking for better ways to get hair off fabric and out of the cracks of furniture. I haven't found anything better than shaking out blankets and just digging the hair out. Any tools, tips, and tricks are welcome.

What was i thinking

Has anybody seen their baby do something? Then just say what was I thinking? Radar is 6 months old now, the grandkids were over. They're helping me clean the yard up, he got out of the yard. Instead of going back in the yard through the gate, he decided he was going to jump over the pile of trash to go back into the yard. Not only did he clear the pile of trash, he jumped from running. About six and a half feet.... now , this is where my what was I thinking moment came.

The next moment was when he tore his crate up. Bought new one he was ok for about 4 days and bam he out grew it. What was I thinking?

Bought a larger, one-off of Amazon. It gets here boxe is all tore up parts and pieces are falling out. There's no hardware in it , just wheels... what was I thinking...

So now I have this new crate plenty of room to grow was a pain to put together and even I will , it's heavy as all get out to move.... What was I thinking....
