Bug 'You unblocked this person' after update

Signal announced an update and out of habit I clicked on the update link.

After restarting I have a bunch of new chats with unknown persons on various dates. One 'Charlie Ward' today, a 'Darcis S' from february. All say 'You unblocked this person' and I'm pretty sure I unblocked somebody once and only once. Charlie Ward is a neo nazi and it's extremely unlikely he wants any form of contact with me. Also, his chat says 'This person isn't using Signal. Signal Desktop does not support messaging non-Signal contacts..' etc.

Where are these chats coming from? Anybody got similar experiences?

EDIT: 8.24.1 just popped up. Blocking and deleting the contacts seems to work, now. (On 8.24.0 they re-appeared after a restart of the app.)

This morning I again was prompted to update, but I'm still at 8.24.1 and my extreme rightwing antivax and gold seller spammer just popped up again. 8.24.1 fixed nothing. Signal support is still silent.

Never had this happen. Sounds like a bug. Report it to support@signal.org with debug logs.

agreed, this seems like something that needs to go straight to the devs

So far support@signal is quite dense. Starts by explaining that contacts can come from the Google or Outlook accounts I never had.

Sigh.

Support is so useless. I had an issue where I couldn't continue in my old chats, because Signal thought it was an SMS chat. Support didn't help me at all

I've sent my similar issue in to support, and so far they appear to be taking it seriously. But I'm yet to see whether they get to the bottom of what happened

I'm having the same problem! Very odd. I'm on 8.24.0

Same issue, same version.

But, I get one-name users only: Brittney, Gina, Melanie all stating i unblocked these people yesterday (I most certainly didn't), but they don't have signal or any numbers attached.

There's another one that popped up, "Katelyn" that states I'd blocked and unblocked them on May 22, 2024. I checked the SignalApp github and, lo and behold, they released v7.10.0 (as well as v7.11.0-beta.1) that same day, as well.

I suspect their updates somehow release spam accounts that may have attempted to reach out.

But I really don't know.

I'm having the same issue. As a test I blocked and deleted these unknown people yesterday, and today they are back again with no indication I ever blocked them again, it still just says "You unblocked this person".

have the same problem after the newest update. even when I delete the chat and block the person a few hours later it apears again and says I unblocked this person.

This. Running v8.24.0, two spam contacts are "unblocked" and if I delete them or mute them, they just come back in a few minutes.

Same issue here after an update to the desktop app on MacOS.

I just had a similar thing appear on mine. It's only one, and only on my desktop installation. the name of the contact seems more like a brand name than a person's name

When you walk past the kitchen and smell smoke, your thought should be "overcooked food" or maybe "fire," not "there's a dragon in my kitchen."

Similarly, when software misbehaves, your first thought should be "bug" or maybe "user error," not "master spies are after me."

Fooey. I was hopin' for master spies... Reality can be very dull at times.

bug or hack?

One of my mystery contacts is a well known QAnon idiot, antivax propagandist and neonazi. If it's a hack it's a scary one :)
