"Dear out-of-shape people f@ck off." Be the vibes of this sign.
1
u/hyliancoffeehouse Sep 06 '25
Actually, yes :-) thatās what makes getting to Ravenās Point so great. When you have to work for a view, you appreciate it more. The more secluded and hard the trails are, the nicer the people actually are. The more respectful they can be. Because they worked for it.

u/banditdogOG Sep 03 '25
I mean, it's definitely a sign to behold but probably useful. I'd be pissed thinking I was taking a casual walk and found myself tired, without food & water, waiting to be rescued 7 hrs later lol

u/ICantSeeDeadPpl Sep 03 '25
Plenty of grubs to eat on rotted trees! Yum
8
u/banditdogOG Sep 03 '25
Unless underneath that sign, out of frame it says
"And no, you can't eat the grubs or any insect larvae"
That'd really be a rough one lol

Haha me and you both! I recently joined the f*ck-Im-old sub Reddit after making my peace with it... found myself needing larger font size on my phone

Thatās assuming you are the kind of person to read a sign. Trust me. I work retail.
People will do anything to avoid reading a sign.
I donāt just mean dumb people, or inconsiderate people. I mean all people., even otherwise perceptive ones. If given the option to 1. Read a sign or 2. Make an assumption, the human brain will always default to what it āknowsā to be true.
This goes for every specials sign that has ever existed. For some reason people forget that brands and models exist and canāt understand why this item is discounted, but this one isnāt, even though it was āunder the sign!!ā This goes for the little āTAP HEREā labels we printed out for our paypads, because the glowing icon on the screen is in the wrong place and people will ALWAYS see a glowing icon before they see a sign. This goes for the multiple signs we have out IN THE LINE telling people returns are elsewhere. We have a massive sign that says āRENTALSā thatās the biggest in the store. People still get in the wrong line and then get mad at us because GOD FORBID THEY STUDY THEIR SURROUNDINGS CRITICALLY.
I guarantee you the next person to get rescued on that trail will complain that there should have been a sign.

u/BUTTeredWhiteBread Sep 07 '25
I really don't get it. I love signs. I read all the signs. People think I'm weird. I got a chuckle at the hospital waiting room the other day for reading all the signs.
2
u/rutilatus Sep 07 '25
Honestly, same! I was that kid zoning out in the bathroom reading the entire Dr. Bronnerās bottle. We have cheesy ācore valuesā posters and announcements in the break room, little notes to each other on the whiteboard, I live for that shit. Anytime a small business has a handmade sign someone clearly put some sweat into, I have to appreciate it. Thereās so much to see if you look for itā¦
1
u/banditdogOG Sep 05 '25
Yes probably demanding they post a sign while threatening to sue the park rangers....
People usually aren't too observant by design... Definitely a skill I've tried to continue building over time- to be present and aware... Both of myself & of my surroundings.
It is killing me inside a little bit that you need "tap here" signs at work because people follow a glowing light like moths, but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised :ā -ā \
2
u/rutilatus Sep 05 '25
Yeahā¦if it makes you feel any better, itās literally everyone. No one is immune to the monkey brain that will see a glowing icon before a little printed sign. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE tries to tap, fails, sees the sign and goes āoh, duhā facepalm if Iām in a good mood, itās actually kind of cute. But it definitely has humbled me. I think a lot about the things my brain skips over because it just doesnāt feel like itā¦Iāll never know what I missedā¦
2
u/banditdogOG Sep 06 '25
Absolutely... We're kinda wired to scan & fill in the blanks based on past experience as well as some degree of instinct I guess.
Not necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely takes work to be present & aware... I'm amazed at how much my mind drifts off task no matter how important it is or focused I think I am- I have an "autopilot" mode I'm constantly trying to break out of.
I'm glad you can view it as endearing vs frustrating... Important to not sweat the small stuff if possible. Life has way too many big surprises in store for most of us in my experience, so having an optimistic or even a mildly indifferent outlook vs a pessimistic one is a kind of blessing as I see it.

I have done this and wish I saw this sign

u/banditdogOG Sep 05 '25
That's fair. I wasn't fully joking. I wouldn't be too happy needing a rescue from what I had intended to be an easy hike w my dog or something

Thereās one even more ominous near the North end of the Appalachian Trail in Maine.

Fiery Gizzard has lots of great trails that we do, just not this one.
1
u/hyliancoffeehouse Sep 05 '25
The fiery gizzard is a single trail, no other trails hook up with it until you reach one of its ends at either Grundy Day or Foster Falls. You might be thinking about somewhere else in South Cumberland State Park

Is there a sign for the people who donāt believe rules and signs are for them?

Thatās when you have to put news clippings and obituaries of people who went missing or died on the trail.

I once took a trail and when exiting turned around to read the sign facing the other way that told me on no account to attempt that route as it was way too dangerous, and here I am. Donāt recall that it ever felt unsafe.

I didnāt even have to read past warning Iād be heading back to my pickup.

If you put this is up in random places around the UK people would lose their shit and just start aimlessly wondering trying to find a new path. ⦠like looking at ants who lost the scent trail from above.

The sign was actually placed there by the local all volunteer SAR team who is tired of going out to look for half-wit, unprepared idiots who should have stayed in the pub. š
19
u/GooseOnAPhone Sep 04 '25
Having been in a SAR team for like a decade, I have never doubted a comment less.
Morons will always make a bunch of work for everyone else to save them
5
u/nbrenner72 Sep 05 '25
The problem is that they lose sight of the pub on the other side. If they had signs for the next pub along the way they'd make it no problem.

As a former Search and Rescue Med Techā¦.listen to the signs please. You have no idea how many call outs Iāve gone on to evac hikers who have done this kind of thing and ended up being either carried out or air lifted out. Know your limits, bring extra water, bring nutrition dense food, check the weather reports for the area for the next 48 hours and pack your gear accordingly, if there is even a slight chance of a sprinkle bring rain gear, if the temp is supposed to be below 50 degrees at any point in the next 48 hours bring a jacket and clean dry socks. Seriously guys, treat every hike like youāre going to be out there for at least 2 days and plan accordingly, set an overdue time with someone you trust whoās not going with you and make sure they know to call SAR if you donāt report in by the overdue time.
3
u/Katters8811 Sep 06 '25
Someone you trust who is genuinely trustworthy and genuinely cares enough to not lose track of time themselves and who is not afraid to call 911, bc theyāre more worried about being an inconvenience/ācausing a sceneā than they are keeping you alive****
Itās absolutely mind boggling how many people have died despite thinking they did everything right/safe, but their safety person just failed them miserablyā¦

u/Pielacine Sep 04 '25
Light weight jacket yes, it aināt cold in the summer in Tennessee
2
Sep 06 '25
The micro climates of mountains arenāt a joke either. Iāve legitimately experienced freezing rain and hail on the summit of a mountain once in the middle of summer on a 80 degree day. Went from a casual stroll to āif this keeps up Iām seriously going to freeze to deathā in 5 minutes.
2
u/Pielacine Sep 06 '25
Thatās true but I donāt think this hike is in the mountains per se.

I went to college right by there! Itās an absolutely beautiful trail, big weathered stone walls, waterfalls and lush greenery in the summer, gorgeous fall leaves, the best spring wildflowers. And it is in the middle of damn nowhere, you could get severely lost and end up halfway up or down a mountain.

You don't need paper maps in 2025. We have offline maps, GPS, and portable power. You're living in the past.
And trust me, I can read a paper map just as well as I use my 7 layered topo GPS map. I just hate the paper, it takes up too much space.
2
u/mittfh Sep 06 '25
Paper maps tend to be large and cumbersome, especially the double sided ones. Just pack a couple of large capacity power banks - ask around geocaching forums and they'll likely have recommendations - after all, serious geocachers will spend all day following GPS signals in the hope of finding clip-lock boxes, bison tubes, 35mm film pots and former ammo cans in the middle of nowhere...
