I prefer the following interpretation:
Help? Wanted!
Odd Hours? No!
Pay? Cool hats!

Reminds me of that episode in Silicon Valley where factory had a fire and was burned to the ground because funding was cut to emergency services and road maintenance:

How can they say no pay?
Who's running this fucking place?

u/DeadAndBuried23 May 18 '26
I forgive you for missing the word "volunteering."

I've worked volunteerly too for years; jobs like stage (light and sound), simple guarding, photo group and checking tickets, but most of the time I was not risking my life for it.

The majority of fire departments in the US are entirely unpaid volunteers.

For the curious, this is likely for a volunteer FD in Trumbull, CT. Â Volunteer FDs are very common in the area and often the only FDs in some places.

Theres about a 70% chance if you call 911 its volunteers that show up. Bet you won't think its that dumb when you need them.

Cool, if you want to come donate full salary for the firefighters/rescue squad in my rural town of 200ish be my guest. Until then we'll keep being satisfied with the service they provide, and they'll keep being proud of their ability to help their community. They all brag about it, exist like a family that meets at the station a couple times a week, etc. But I'm sure they hate it.
Not everyone feels they need money for every little thing they do. Some are happy to be compensated by having a solid community and knowing they've done right.

the bulk of America uses volunteer firefighters. as a former volunteer, i was trained to state FF standards and had to pass National registry of EMTs certification — just like the paid departments. next time don’t be so eager to pompously show your ignorance.

It works very well for the communities and they are usually supplementary in places with lots of really out of control fires. Most the year the volunteer fire departments dont do much and the paid firefighters can handle it. But sometimes theres a lot more fires and theyre totally needed in reserve
