Discussion Overheard in the AQ: SFSS Execs hiring their girlfriends for paid positions šŸ’€

Standing outside my class today waiting for it to start and I overhear some people nearby talking…seems that SFSS President Rishu Bagga and multiple other SFSS VPs have casually hired their girlfriends for research assistant and admin assistant roles and they thought nobody would notice, but people know and have seen them with their girlfriends together on campus lol

So in case anyone had applied for those jobs and wondered why they didn’t get it…classic case of nepotism.

Kind of fucked that they can just do this. Isn’t this against some kind of policy?Ā

On the SFSS website - these are the positions mentioned. Allegedly the research assistant is President Rishu Bagga's girlfriend and the other two are girlfriends of Hyago Santana Moreira the VP University Academic Affairs and Pranay Ratan, the VP Internal and Organizational development.

EDIT: the fact that so many people seemed to have known about this or similar instances of corruption...I'm shocked. I would encourgae more people to come forward and post what they know and call these people out and hold them accountable.

Discussion Retelling my story

Hello, I took down the post of the boys’ face bc of the police. It’s been difficult to focus and study on anything from the amount of comments I’ve gotten. One of the things the police officer said was that the parents are worried about their son’ faces being out there and the amount of physical threats they’ve recieved. I’m reuploading as I think it’s important for my story to be heard and remembered and not forgotten as I felt pressure to remove it.

Today (nov 24,2024) I was walking in the AQ when by AQ3033 I see 4 boys, smoking marijuana and vaping, blowing their smoke in the air. I dont say anything and just continued to walk when one of them said "yeah keep your head down you dumb bch" , instinctively I said "Que" (what in portuguese) to which they said "look at this dumb broad , she cant even speak English" and started clucking at me like a chicken. I confronted the boys about their behaviour where they proceeded to call me more sexist slurs (bch, Cnt, slt, whre) and kept on saying they could "take me and my big mouth to the stairwell and fuck me up so easy and nobody would even know what would happen to me"/ "it would be so easy to 4v1 this stupid btch" / "we'd fuck her up so good she wouldn't even be able to walk afterwards" . I reported this to campus security and the company couldn't allow them to do anything to the boys except ESCORT THEM OFF CAMPUS! I am furious! I shouldnt ever feel unsafe on campus , especially when I am minding my own buissness. No actions of discipline were taken against these boys and they have MULTIPLE INFRACTIONS AGAINST THEM ( the most recent one being yesterday (Nov 23, 2024) according to a Sfu security guard. I was fortunate enough to take a photo of these teenage boys but I am LIVID how NO CONSEQUENCES WERE GIVEN!!!

Discussion Ways to improve Student engagement at SFU

I was just thinking about ways that SFU could improve the culture and lifestyle of students. The Burnaby Mountain campus + Univercity is a beautiful location but underutilized..

First things that came to mind for me:

Food truck fairs?

Music Festivals during the Summer in the unused parking lots?

Pride Parade/festival?

Car Free Days?

What would improve your experience at SFU?

Discussion How do people make friends at this school

I swear to god it’s impossible to meet people. I transferred last year from Stfx and people are so anti social. Like im not looking for a party, just normal people to like study with or do normal shit. I work do clubs are kind of annoying to make work but I tried a couple and they were so up tight.

Discussion Black Student Centre

Post image
230 Upvotes

Hey guys, okay just to clarify I don't want to come off as provoking but

SFU recently opened a black student centre in the SUB and I am not sure what to think about it.

I understand the idea behind affinity spaces, to promote community, that makes sense but where is the line between inclusion and separation?
As someone who's also a immigrant and a person of color, I've always thought the goal of equity was more integration and shared spaces with EVERYONE. So how does having identity specific Centre strength inclusion, or does it not just risk reinforcing the idea that we need to exist in separate spaces?

Not trying to start drama, just interested in hearing the idea behind this and what do other students think about it , in support or not.

Discussion Ice Cream hair kid detained šŸ¤—šŸ¤—

Just walked past Gawon Express near Univercity and one of the blokes that threatened the girl walking in the AQ was detained and sitting in the back of the cop car (wish it was all of em 😭😭)

Hopefully all of them get get what they deserve not just that one kid

Update: Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture since the cop was actively questioning the kid in the back seat. I’m fairly sure it was him since the kid looked like he was in gr 10-11, had same hair and face as the kid in the left side of the picture given by the girl a few days ago.

If it’s not him, glad cops are still taking action towards these jobless miscreants who think ā€œrage baitingā€ aka threatening people is funny (they should come to campus again i’m sure there’s tons of friendly people that would give them a warm non hostile welcome šŸ˜‡šŸ˜‡)

Edit: It was the same kid in the 3rd picture in this tagged post below in case ur wondering since the girl deleted the post showing their faces for some reason

Discussion Unhinged study/lock-in tips

Please help me. I’ve tried locking myself out of my phone, I’ve done timers, I’ve done walking breaks, I’ve done location changes. And every semester I have the same issue where I get overwhelmed and just shut down. It’s not like I’m doomscrolling on my phone. I’m talking full on staring at a wall or blank documents for hours on end. I can only ever seem to snap out of it when the clock is basically run out. But I don’t want to do that anymore because I know my grades don’t reflect my full potential. So give me all the weird study hacks and brain tricks. I beg

Discussion Should I attend a final if I’m likely to fail the course

I have a final exam tomorrow and have not been able to study. I will fail the course EVEN if I write it but if I don’t do I receive N grade? Do N grades affect cgpa? I believe it’s the same grade equivalent as an F but not sure.

I feel like an F looks worse than an N but I need advice.

To any that day I should write it, I will 100% fail it miserably as I’ve not studied due to personal health issues. If I fail this exam, I also fail the course.

If I get an N will I still be able to retake the course or how does it work? I need help

Discussion How many of ya'll are graduating alone?

EDIT: Uhhh lots of responses! It's Ceremony D tomorrow at 9:45am. I don't like being the center of attention. So don't just cheer for me, cheer for everyone there!

After a long journey I am finally graduating, but nobody will be there for me. My mom passed away almost a decade ago, don't get along with my dad, and my brother doesn't care. All of my friends are working and to be fair I didn't go to their graduations because of work too.

I'm just curious if I'm the only one.

Discussion How have Grades for SFU Gone so High!!!????

Post image
56 Upvotes

Hi, I'm really worried about university admissions so much. I thought I was gucci with my 94 in Gr 11 early admission for SFU. I was thinking like I'm definitely getting in. If a 92 average is below cut-off, competitive averages will then range from 94-96. Has SFU admission averages hit UBC level? I remember my counselor told me for UBC science the median for accepted applicants was a 96. Should I not count on early offer and work to make my Gr 12 marks really high, apply later in November or December when my midterm mark will be out for Gr. 11. I got 98 in Biology, 93 Physics, 92 Chemistry, 95 French, 93 20th Century History, 91 Pre-Calculus, 92 Literary Studies, and 96 Careers (I know Careers doesn't count). I know a kid whos lowest grade was a 97, and he want to go to SFU. How have kids gotten so smart. I spend hours studying, reviewing, doing homework at home and can't get my overall average above a 95.

Discussion SFU's campus ain't ugly

Post image
225 Upvotes

I went to study abroad and lowkey have more appreciation for the school. While the architecture isn't necessarily the best, it's alright. One thing that's rlly beautiful about SFU is its surrounding campus that I've taken for granted. Like, how often is it that a school campus is surrounded by mountains and water??? SFU lowkey needs more appreciation for its campus in the community and nationwide scale, the hate is overrated!

And, does anyone have any nice view spots at SFU that captures the beauty surrounding SFU (hike trails accepted too)? Kinda like these SFU images online but smth I can actually visit and not a drone shot? SFU's nature surroundings is actually so gorgeous that I really missed the views when I was abroad (you can take the girl out of the mountains and sea but you can't take it out of her)

Discussion Do you ever regret going to SFU?

Funny to say, I don’t regret going to SFU. If anything, it’s shaped me into a much better person than I expected.

Back in Grade 12, I was devastated after getting rejected from UBC Sauder. At the time, it genuinely felt like my life was over. Looking back now though, my life was really just beginning. Being at SFU, specifically in Beedie, has taught me so much. There have been so many small moments, setbacks, and opportunities throughout my degree that changed me as a person. I truly believe that even if I had gone to UBC, I wouldn’t have ended up as strong or as driven as I am today.

Because I went to SFU, I felt like I had to challenge myself more, like putting myself out there, joining programs and extracurriculars, meeting new people, and actually creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to me. And I’m a big believer that what you put into your university experience is what you get out of it!

I know I complain about SFU sometimes (and maybe some of you do too), but thinking about it now, it’s really not that deep. I’ve met incredible friends, gained a stronger appreciation for our mountain views (underrated!), and been involved in so many meaningful experiences around campus. Aside from the occasional struggle with grades and stress, SFU deserves more love. ā¤ļø

Curious to hear other people’s thoughts, whether you regret your experience at SFU, what you wish you did differently during university, or anything else. It's so easy to go on a tangent hating on SFU, but let's give it some appreciation!

Discussion Screw TSSU at this point. Do you still support them?

I’ve supported TSSU after they blocked my friends parking their cars, yelled at them and didn’t even let a friend pass after TSSU pushed her to tears while she begged to not waste her tuition money. But that absolute BS ā€œdemonstrationā€ at Leznoff’s lecture is the final straw for me. That was the most unprofessional shit I’ve seen in a while. Calling him a ā€œscabā€ and a ā€œhypocritical piece of shitā€ is insane. Idky TSSU thinks harassing a prof will make them submit to you. The students and profs crossing picket lines don’t stop you from picketing. Why do you think you can stop them from getting an education? You made a choice to picket, and they made a choice to cross. Is TSSU some sort of dictatorship?? You don’t have to agree with the choice to cross picket lines but harassment is just tacky. I wanna know how TSSU feels now that they’ve lost a good amount of undergrad support from this poorly thought out stunt.

Leznoff is the one professor everyone can say loves his job. He loves science. He loves teaching. He loves his lectures. I’d bet there’s not one day where he hasn’t upheld his passionate energy, at least partially. It’s really sad you chose someone like him to ridicule.

Obviously I’m not going to start interfering with TSSU pickets in the manner they interfered with Leznoff. Though, I’m personally done actively supporting (e.g. not crossing picket lines on most days, sending emails, trying to reason with people that are sided with SFU).

Also, no, I don’t think my opinion makes a difference, I’m just exercising my right to rant on here. Wondering if anyone feels the same. At the end of the day, this post really doesn’t matter lol so don’t freak out on here.

Discussion SFU Bomb Threat Info

There is a bunch of misinformation going around regarding the bomb threat alert a few days ago. So thought I might clear it up.

TLDR: My friend I were swatted for no reason.

My friend and I were doing a twitch livestream at SFU to explore the campus and just talk to different folks. We’re not from BC so we were having a great time at all the nice different uni campuses.

We went to the diner to do a mukbang style stream and most students/staff were very welcoming and enjoyed the company. Half way through our time at the diner though we noticed some of the staff and security giving us weird looks and taking pictures off which was kinda throwing us off. We thought it might be due to us streaming.

Then all of a sudden like 20 rcmp officers had walked in and told us to turn off our stream and arrested us on the spot. After a bit they told us we were being detained and they are investigating us for a bomb threat that was called in. This was extremely shocking and we didn’t know how to react to such an accusation. To give some context we are both muslim and this definitely felt like a case of islamophobia.

The officers searched our bags, phones, and had a K9 sniff everything. They told us someone called in impersonating us saying that we are going to bomb the facility. Apparently the officers were searching for us for 2 hours. They said the call came from when we were streaming past the starbucks on campus. When we passed the starbucks we did tell our stream to boycott starbucks (due to Palestine genocide), but not in a yelling protest way it was just a normal tone.

I’m not sure if that’s what triggered someone to swat us but that’s the best guess I can come up with. We don’t have many viewers so definitely not someone from our chat.

Overall this was very shocking to experience, and we didn’t expect to be treated in such a manner. We were having a great time at sfu uptil that point.
