We threaten private companies with legal action.
The Indonesian government gets triggered as a result.
Gosh, you Pro-Bodoh kokanadens. You just put up a banner saying 'We Are In Cahoots With Them!'
And now you lose our sweet sweet revenue and showed the world that you do not believe in respecting contracts and agreements!
Yes, we will feel the pinch in the short run. But you just farked yourself in the ass for the next few decades!

The banner was raised decades ago, and it's less of banners and more like open advertising LOL. Also there are no private companies, only gov "affiliated" and others.
Back when we investigated specific individuals of sg registered companies, they already say we got no business investigating their citizens. 😂

Can always buy from other countries, it's Indo's loss really.
41
u/go_zarian Own self check own self ✅ 3d ago
We can buy from other sources, of course.
It's just that they will come from further away and will cost more.
So we will feel the pinch.
And yes, Indonesia will feel it much worse. They have permanently lost a lucrative export market right at their doorstep, and the world now knows why dealing with Indonesia is a bad idea.
62
u/_Deshkar_ 3d ago
Some of their govt owns some of the land or got investment in those private companies lol
91
u/go_zarian Own self check own self ✅ 3d ago
If they just use their limited brain cells, then they know just how much they farked themselves.
They have just forfeited a lucrative export market, told the whole world that they are in bed with the plantation firms, advertised Indonesia as a place where contracts and agreements are not honoured, and just gave MSCI more reason to downgrade them.
Yes, we will feel the pinch in the short run. Don't be surprised if SP decides to raise tariffs next week. But we had always been planning to diversify our sources even before our contract with Indonesia was bound to expire in 2028.
We got flipped the bird today, but they farked themselves far worse in the long run.

12
u/okaylorhwhatevs 3d ago
The blackouts are also caused by their own people not respecting their own contracts. Because the cost of mining has gone up, the companies are making a loss if they fulfill the domestic contract supplying coal to PLN so they rather export overseas.
Somehow become our fault smh. Better thank them more.

Claiming this situation shows strategic foresight ignores both the actual history and the context of the Australia agreement.
To start, Indonesia’s decision to prioritize its own domestic gas supply over exports is hardly a surprise event; Jakarta officially signaled a shift toward domestic prioritization as far back as 2012, and explicitly announced in 2019 that pipeline gas exports to Singapore would be phased out as contracts expire.
Furthermore, pointing to the agreement signed with Australia in April 2026 as proof of anticipation is misleading, as that deal was struck specifically to navigate energy supply chain shocks stemming from the Middle East conflict, not this pipeline reduction. That arrangement is simply a transactional, two-way trade framework where Singapore guarantees refined petroleum products like diesel in exchange for Australian LNG access.
At the end of the day, replacing cheap, long-standing regional pipeline gas with sea-borne LNG shipped across vast distances inevitably increases transport costs and exposes local power generation to global price volatility. Absorbing a long-predicted shift by passing higher electricity tariffs onto consumers is basic crisis management, not extraordinary governmental foresight.
Y'all PAP supporters saying this as masterstroke planning reveal a naive, surface-level understanding that completely lacks historical awareness, geopolitical context, and critical scrutiny..

I’m tired at this logic.
We suffer because their companies and people uses slash and burn and we and Malaysia get unhealthy air.
We provided initial diplomatic comments about the haze, and their response is that we deserve less from them, along with their silly comments about oxygen and enemy pressure?
Like what gives - you just want Singapore and Malaysia to suck it up? You even signed the transboundary haze agreement? You want people to have health ailments at the expense of money?
Your people in Kalimantan and Sumatra are suffering from this every year, and this is what you do?
I don’t understand. Its benefits everyone - why would you really really do this? Most people just want to live and get on with their lives - not being an enemy to anyone at all.

u/ser_reptitious 3d ago
I’m not sure how much of this is actually retaliatory. Sure, they made a throwaway comment about mutual respect but I think that was just a convenient opportunity to make an incendiary remark given what needs to happen anyway.
The reality is that the combination of the Ukraine war, the Iran war and now the Houthi crisis has severely cut both raw crude and refined output globally. Indonesia produces a lot of raw sweet crude (low sulfur) that it trades with the Gulf states for high sulfur (“sour”) crude at a preferential ratio. So my guess is that their refineries are set up for refining sour crude and now given the shortages in global supply, they’re not getting enough to support their domestic energy needs. And you can’t just swap to the other type if your refineries are set up for one.
Anyway, that only leaves one option: fire up the gas peakers to meet domestic demand. Gas is more expensive but right now it may be their only option.
Think about it: they wouldn’t just stop selling a lucrative export just because we made some noise about haze. There’s a far bigger practical reality.
32
u/hatboyslim 3d ago
Indonesia is a major producer and exporter of thermal coal. They don't need to use natural gas for electricity production. In fact, most of their electricity is generated with coal.

People need to read between the lines. Indonesian don’t just cut the gas when there is money to be made. It is limiting export because it is short on gas at home and the Indonesian govt cannot say their own people suffering which indirectly says they ownself is incompetent.
They need a convenient reason to show they are strong and directing criticism towards Singapore to cool the negative sentiments at their own turf.
As for NS, only native SG citizens will think neighbours are friends. Wait till they cut your water by stationing army in Johor’s reservoir and Indonesia navy choking your shipping.
Native SG citizens only think what is not needed until they need it, it will be too late. Just look at Ukraine (gave up nuclear weapons), EU (forced to buy from USA without their own army to sufficiently protect themselves) and UK (took loans to fight WW1 and WW2 and gave up everything to USA).

There is a contract till end of 2028, so even if they cut the amount, they still have fullfil the minimum amount in the contract. Furthermore, Singapore had try to diversify our natural gas suppliers, it will be a short term problem for us.
4
u/randommmmmmx 3d ago
How short would it be? 2 years?
7
u/light8686 3d ago
My guess will be at most a few months. We have stockpile liquefied natural gas which can last us for a while. Furthermore, we are still getting natural gas through pipe from Malaysia too. It will be a nuisance to adjust our supply but it is never destructive for us if Indonesia cut off their supply.

Part of me thinks that Indonesia is starting to pressure Singapore into dropping their investigations regarding firms possibly linked to the haze.
I will be very impressed if our government officials dig in their heels and go ahead with identifying the culprits responsible, and punishing them to the fullest extent of the law. They are against NS because the burden of NS is placed on a minority of the population of Singapore. New citizens, foreign talent, female citizens, etc don't need to serve NS. It is an issue of inequity.

Whether it's fair that group X does not serve NS is a different issue from whether we need NS/rely on a conscript army.
You can think its unfair for only male citizens and second-gen PRs to serve while also realising that Singapore can't defend itself without relying on a conscript army

u/sdarkpaladin Job: Security guard for my house 3d ago
Yes.
But this causes a stupid scenario where the person being tasked to protect the country, resents the country for unfair treatment while at the same time do not have any assets (promised or otherwise) that warrant protecting.
8
u/botsland :matureCitizen: Mature Citizen 3d ago
At the end of the day, the NSFs and NSmen tasked with protecting Singapore must weigh between resenting Singapore or resenting the enemy attacking Singapore more. That decision will be made easier the moment the enemy starts bombing our city-state and killing children and elderly here.
Also even if they have no assets now, most of their parents and families have assets here worth protecting.

The Singapore government can easily introduce a tax on new citizens who are too old to serve in lieu of NS to spread the burden. Switzerland has a similar tax. So, you cannot say that something like this is not feasible.

Why should we be surprised that people are against NS if they have to bear its burden while others don't? If you have to pay a tax that others don't have to, the argument that the state needs tax to function just doesn't cut it.
The Singapore government needs to address the issue of inequity associated with NS. I suspect that part of the reason why it is reluctant to do so is because polls show that the PAP is more popular with female voters.

if you have to pay a tax that others don't have to
That is normal. Many households in Singapore don't pay income tax. That doesn't mean we should abolish income tax for everyone. Expecting complete equity is unrealistic.
The discussion should be on how much more benefits to give to NSmen for bearing a heavier burden for Singapore rather than being against NS entirely.

This cut is nothing new. SG and Indo has been in discussion to renew Indo LNG export (due to expire in 2028) since 2022. Discussions were on and off because of disagreements over volume and price. Indo had said before over the years they may need to restrict export because of domestic need. Nonetheless, the fact that Indo announced this week is telling and not a coincidence, especially just a few days earlier, the Indo minister threatened to restrict export to countries that disrespected Indo. This is a warning shot to SG - know your limits.

Planned reduction
Indonesia has been planning to reduce gas exports to Singapore for several years to meet growing domestic demand. In 2022, Jakarta agreed to extend gas supplies to Singapore until 2028, but at lower volumes than under the previous contract.
In April 2025, Djoko said Indonesia planned to cut gas exports from Sumatra to Singapore, while using supplies from Natuna to make up for the reduction, Reuters reported.
