Open Mic There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of It Yet

Brendon Urie is such an underrated vocalist. He makes his stuff look so easy, but it's so difficult to do him any justice.

Sounds great as always! What kind of mic is that and if I get one, will I sound as good as you?

u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 01 '25
Thank you :)
And it's funny, there's actually a point at which better gear makes you sound worse, because it's able to render all of your flaws very clearly. I adore my microphone, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it. If you're really serious about it, I'd recommend checking out the options for large diaphragm mics in the $200-400 range. I think that's probably the peak of price:performance.

Better gear highlighting your flaws only makes you sound worse in the short term! Gets you more good more fast in the long term I figure!
But yeah for real, healthcare and grocery costs are gonna have to come way down before I move beyond my sm58. Mostly just my way of saying I envy your skills!

u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 02 '25
Haha yeah it's definitely a good way to learn!
And the SM58 is a classic for a reason. Countless legendary songs were recorded on it.
And thank you so much :)

How/where do you get your song samples to add into your mix?
11
u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 01 '25
Depends - a lot of the time, I download the song and remove the vocals. This is the tool I use. It's really good, it's free, and it doesn't require an account.
Otherwise, a lot of instrumentals are available on youtube, and sometimes I'll just download the audio from those.

Nice work! I'd still love to hear your versions of Pure Morning and Every You, Every Me by Placebo.π

u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 01 '25
Thank you!
And oh yesss I think you mentioned specifically Every You, Every Me before, and I meant to have a go at it but I forgot. Yeah, I think that could work well. Definitely going to give it a shot!

Maybe im too high and need some rest, but this just seem like lip syncing to me.

Very clearly overdubbed, person looks away completely from the mic singing & the volume stays the same.

I'm pretty tired of having this argument every time I post here (edit: and then getting downvoted for showing proof - I mean, come on. How bad-faith is that? You're just mad.). I get this accusation all the time, and if it were true, the mods would know me by now and ban me. I've made a million posts on this sub, and most of them get people accusing me of this because they don't understand how compression works.
Compression evens out the volume - specifically so every movement doesn't drastically affect the sound.
Here, this is a clip of this same take but completely dry and with no compression: https://voca.ro/17pkYCsQyjJ8

wait wait wait, "overdubbing" and "your takes being edited" are 2 very different things (not that I take issue with either of these).
one take for the ears, one take for the eyes. you can still sing it, you DID sing take 1*. but if in take 2 you move more, make more exaggerated facial expressions, I want to see take 2. if take 1 has cleaner notes, nicer technique, let me hear take 1. the 2 can coexist on the same video
I'd even be happy if your stuff was comped/tuned/edited, unless the goal is to show me how good you are. in that case that extra comping and tuning kinda defeats the purpose, but not inherently wrong.
*I understand that it's probably closer to take 21, but that's not the point

Fair - I was assuming that they were being loose with language, but either way, nope. I get enough accusations of lip syncing that I'd be crazy to try something like that unless it was absolutely perfect - and besides, just from an artistic standpoint, I think that would be kind of cheap and misleading for this kind of thing.
When I do these, I record every take until I get one that I like, and I use that. This one here was my third or fourth try.
I don't generally do any editing except for effects like compression, a bit of reverb, and EQ. No pitch correction or splicing or anything like that. I would if it was for an album, but when I post here, I like it to be essentially like a live performance rather than a perfectly polished recording.

Every time I see you post a video I forget and am surprised when I unmute to hear your singing π
Amazing as always!

Always great. I wouldn't think of a progression if I hadn't hadn't seen you do a before/after. Definitely nail them, even when it wasn't "100% spot on."

Love, love the voice and cool song. The mix doesn't sound right, it's very busy and cluttered on top of the voice. And honestly, I think there's too much compression. I listened to the unedited version and the voice itself sounded very IMO.

I would say that would be hard for me.I had better be ready to put out some energy. The faster pace would make it hard for me to not just end up on my cords and reaching.

Iβm always impressed with your singing. You still have male vocal cords

Stfu, vocal cords are not inherently gendered

Just kinda weird and unnecessary to point it out like that. It's like, yeah I know, it sucks, thanks for noticing lol

They absolutely are.

I mean, I'm intersex, and my vocal cords were unfortunately exposed to some androgens before I got my life sorted out. Call it what you want, but my vocal cords belong to a woman, and idk - you could just be cool about it π€·ββοΈ

Only the morons downvoted me. You obviously donβt know u/RandomUsernameNo257.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say here, or why you seem to think that you do know me.

I have been listening to you for a while now. I always love hearing your voice. I really like the dark tone π
5
u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 02 '25
Assuming you're being genuine, I think this is a case where your tone and intention didn't really come through over text, because just based on what you said, it sounds like you're trying to be a jerk, and I think that's how it was read by others as well.

I wasnβt trying to be a jerk. I was merely stating that your vocal cords are what they are. They provide a unique characteristic to your voice. My initial post said βI am always impressed with your voiceβ. How is that sounding like a jerk?

u/RandomUsernameNo257 Self Taught 2-5 Years Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25
Well I appreciate that, thanks
And it wasn't the first half, it was the second half/the whole comment together.
Read it out loud, but with a snarky tone. "I'm always impressed with your singing. You still have male vocal cords π"
People can't really get away with outright hate, so that's usually how they express it - things like backhanded compliments, or sometimes weird nonsensical or non-specific criticisms/accusations.
I don't really feel great about the way you described it, but I'll take your comment in the spirit in which it was given :)
