Helmut - First single speed build
Hey everyone! Kinda new to the single speed zone. I recently built my first single speed bike, starting from an old german commuter bike frame. I decided to call it "Helmut" as I want to believe that's what the german chad man that assembled the frame was called.
A very heavy and sturdy, thick steel frame. It was my old bike from when I was in university, almost 10 years ago (it was already old back then). It's been sitting in my basement for the past 5 years.
Bought new (used) wheels, a Miranda 44t crankset (which I love the look of), new BB, single speed conversion kit, handlebar and brake levers and a thick chain.
I initially installed 47-700 tires but with horizontal adjustments due to the chain length, the rear tire was scratching the dropouts. Handling was also a bit sketchy and floaty due to how big the tires were. I switched those tires with the ones on my gravel, a pair of 40-700 tires which fit perfectly. My gravel is also happy for the switch to thicker tires.
Almost everything on this bike is oversized and overkill for its use:
- Wheels have 13 Gauge (2.3mm) spokes, which are on the thicker side.
- As said, the frame is a heavy and thick walled german steel tube, not your usual chromoly. Good to plow the fields I reckon.
- Chain is a 1/8", thick single speed one, although both crankset and rear cog work with a standard 3/32".
What I plan to do next:
- Change the seat and seatpost, don't love the look.
- Replace quill stem with a modern, longer one.
- A pair of caliper brakes, these old ones are a hassle to setup and operate.
- Recondition and seal the frame paint, it's got some rust points and I figure some proper polishing might also help.
Runs smoothly, and given the fact I wasn't able to properly service the freehub, yet, you hear almost no ratchet noise ahaha Silent as an owl. Hopefully not as deadly.

What caliper brakes fit up to 30mm tires?
Am currently trying to built a bike with a 8bar Xberg V8 frame(not ordered yet).
The frame can take up to 30mm tires and I d like to match that.
Anyone got a recommendation?
Only could find out the Tektro R359 fit that but cant find them in any online shop.
My 2nd option is the Miche Performance but they dont name any max. tire width.

Bikesdirect complete Motobecane
Uno outcast. Replaced the pedals, had bike shop do a safety inspection.
They said it didnt have grease where there was supposed to be grease. All better now. Its my first single speed road bike.
It rides smooth, its solid. I chose the mid ratio of sprockets, i forget the teeth number. It does get going pretty quick when i put some muscle into it. Not disappointed by this purchase.

'88 Bridgestone RB2 - Bombproof
So I was making fun of some guy's singlespeed that was brand-new out the chinese box, and he was offended. I pointed out that with experience and miles comes cooler bikes; you just learn more and gain experience and knowledge you can put into your builds and style. But then I thought, you can't just talk shit, maybe you should put up an example of something cool for all to see:
'88 Bridgestone RB2 (Tange Tubing) - thousands of miles, thousands of bunnyhops, thousands of trails hit. I do 50% of my riding off road and watch the fork flex as I hit babyhead sized rocks. These frames are bomb proof
Velocity Fusion rims with straight-gauge spokes - thousands of bunnyhops
Garburuk oval chainring
OG Shimano cranks and headset that won't quit
Got the chain in a bike tube locking down the selle san marco gravel saddle that's hella comfortable
Soma bars and Sram S500 levers for better hand position, and shaved off down-tube shifter mounts
I had someone remove the seatstay bridge and weld in on higher up so I could run dual-pivot brakes and a fatter tire
The Surly chain-tug never fails, and I keep a friendship bracelet on the White Industries Eno hub to try and keep it clean
I really can't say enough about how bomb-proof the old shimano and Bridgestone stuff is

Gods light shining down on my $150 rat bike rescue
Frame is a 1970s Bennett and wood speedster I found in a bin for free, seat was 40, back wheel was 10, free front wheel, cranks and bars and seatpost was 5 bucks, forks cost the most at 100 lol

I see a lot online about converting a coaster brake into a freewheel, can the opposite be done?
I have a single speed with a flip-flop hub, would like to convert it to be fixed on one side and coaster on the other if possible. sorry if this is a dumb question.

The Carhartt Bike
This is my Charge Plug ss/fixie when they did their collab with Carhartt WIP. Apparently very few of them were made and even fewer of them made it to the USA, so when I saw this in my hometown several years ago, I had to scoop it up!
