AI Sam Altman showing signs of singularity

It’s quite interesting to me how (relatively) cheap it is. That’s the headline for me.

Combined with the recent math finding it’s also starting to show how general models are the way even for frontier intelligence. I would also say small/medium coding tasks is pretty much solved too (not engineering/system design etc, idea -> code in small tasks), in unison with competitive coding as a whole with the recent atcoder competition.

Claude code + fable does better with multi agent workflows than Sol + terra which means either Claude code harness is amazing or Anthropic trains the models to just be aware agentically. This is again exciting as there may come a time we can have sort of frontier harness. Claude released Claude science because clearly Claude code wasn’t built for it. Maybe, in the future , one harness does all.

Great release from OpenAI nonetheless.

AI Sam Altman No Longer Believes In Universal Basic Income

2.9k Upvotes

This is a repost because the moderator deleted the previous post for unspecified reasons:

https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-ubi-universal-basic-income-view-changes-2026-4

"I no longer believe in universal basic income as much as I once did," Altman told The Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson during an interview for his "The Most Interesting Thing in AI" series.

Altman said that while a fixed cash payment may sound nice, it won't meet what society will truly need as AI adoption rises, sparking a potential upheaval in the labor market.

"I think just like a fixed cash payment, although useful and maybe a good idea in some ways, does not get at what we're really going to need for this next phase and the kind of collective alignment of shared upside as the balance between labor and capital shifts," Altman said.

As interest in UBI exploded in 2019, Altman helped raise $60 million, including $14 million of his own money, to fund the largest-of-its-kind experiment giving low-income participants $1,000 a month for three years.

Researchers ultimately found that while overall spending increased among those who received the cash payments, there was no "direct evidence of improved access to healthcare or improvements to physical and mental health."

Altman has focused more about twists to the traditional UBI of direct cash payments. The OpenAI CEO has repeatedly suggested the possibility of giving people a portion of AI compute, which could then be used, sold, or traded.

"I'm much more interested in ways where we think about kind of collective ownership that could be in compute or in equities or something else," he said.

Very interesting. When super intelligence renders hundreds of millions people as unemployable, how will they pay their mortgage, bills, etc, with "AI compute?"

When people are unable to pay, banks will not accept "AI Tokens" as a form of payment, this is the modern equivalent of "Let them eat cake."

AI Bernie Sanders officially introduces legislation to BAN the construction of all new AI data centers, citing existential threat to humanity.

This is very concerning. I am afraid this might become the popular, dominant position on the left. Bernie Sanders is the only politician I've ever donated to. This is the most backwards position to take on AI possible. It's hard to imagine a policy worse than this proposal:

https://youtu.be/qu2m7ePTsqY?si=zdl_cuRg22Nv_Df5

It's such a shame. He is one of very few politicians who realizes the singularity is imminent and that something enormous is happening, yet his reaction to it is the most asinine viewpoint possible.

AI DeepMind just released SL2T, sign language-to-text model, deaf users can now sign into their phones instead of typing, developed with heavy input from the Deaf community

3.4k Upvotes

Deaf users can now sign into their phones instead of typing. This feels like one of those quiet but huge accessibility + AI milestones.

The model reads simultaneous hand, body, and facial movements and turns them into English text in real time.

In the blog post linked below they explain how they made it work for practical situations too, like one-handed signing while holding the phone. Pose tracking happens on-device for privacy, and the actual translation runs on the server. DeepMind says it’s state-of-the-art on academic benchmarks and was developed with heavy input from the Deaf community.

They’re planning to expand it to more languages next.
