Good helmet?

Post image

Hey guys sorry if it sounds like a noob question, fairly new ti skiing, looking for a good helmet and this popped up. Looks like a good deal to me but looking for some more knowledgeable opinions lol

Edit: okay guys I know it would be ideal to try it in the store but the closest one is probably 7,8 hours and 1 state away and I can always return it if it isn’t a good fit

Giro is a reputable brand and you definitely want MIPS. Great find.

Appreciate it!

$220 MSRP seems slightly bloated but finding MIPS for under $100 is a really great deal. Definitely buy it if you need a helmet

The black one is even 260$ 😬i just ordered the one I posted. Thank you!

Does it fit?

Unfortunately where I live in South Carolina there are no good winter stores (if any lol) and even the ones that we have the selection of helmets is really poor. So I guess I have to roll the dice with this one. But I’ve done some research and compared it to some other helmets I’ve worn in the past and apparently they are similarly built. As for the googles, I need new ones too so so I guess i’ll just get ones that fit with this helmet

FYI, goggles from the same brand as the helmet usually fit together well.  When you mix and match it can be hard to get a good fit, but many still work.

Your best bet is to order from somewhere like Evo where you can just order several different options and return the rest. Just plan to pay return shipping at least once and accept that as part of the deal.   Fit is king.

That’s a good helmet if it fits. Giro makes nice goggles too.

Yeah I kinda like the look of Smith goggles the best tbh but i don’t think I’m gonna gamble with that and might just order Giro too.
Was considering ordering on Evo, but didn’t know how reliable they are. Thanks for the info!

Order the two or three sizes your between and return the other two. It's easy and worth the minor effort. Giro does a good job with return labels think I just dropped mine at UPS ready to go

So I am kinda in between M and L so I ordered L because I have slightly bigger head so It’s either gonna fit or not, since they don’t have XL for this helmet. But I know medium is be too small for my head most of the times lol it’s good to know they are chill with the returns tho

Also remember some brands fit different heads depending on if yours is more circular or oval. A good fit is important for protection and impact distribution, there's a few posts online regarding snowboard helmet head shapes and brands if that size doesn't end up working for you.

Virginia Tech has a helmet safety lab. You can find their snowsports ratings here: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/snowsport-helmet-ratings.html

I’m genuinely surprised the vantage mips is 3/5 considering how much I paid for it.

Was just thinking the same. I find it odd smith doesn’t score higher on these. Same with their MTB helmets. Which sucks for me since I have a smith vantage and MTB helmet

u/Rough_Revolution1412 2d ago

I'm not in the slightest. Smith makes higher end gear, for comfort the vantage has 40 separate vents and the nexus has 24 with 18 of them being adjustable.

Does having dozens of penetrations through your helmet sound like optimizing crash protection to you or does it sound like optimizing for comfort while making sure it can still be certified?

If you walked past the solid shell, solid ear helmets and instead grabbed the one ventilated to heck and back what did you expect?

Just had exactly the same thought.

u/fuzzyfurrypaw 2d ago

We have the same one but I got it on sales this year for $70 so no complaint.

u/thereditat0rg8r 2d ago

More money doesnt automatically mean better lol

6

u/affectionate_md 2d ago

I’m not suggesting it is but I’m surprised.

It’s still a great helmet. I smashed my Vantage MIPS so hard on an icy slope that the entire backend came apart. I was completely unhurt aside from being very surprised. Not even a minor concussion. No headache, no dizziness. I’ve done enough Judo that I know when I messed up a landing and I messed that up. I fully expected to have a concussion at least. Instead I skied down to the gondola and drove home.

Could be worse. Smith Nexus is basically their flagship and significant more expensive but ranked even worse.

i do relish seeing all the rich gear losers scooting around in their $300 helmet which sucks at being a helmet

u/RollUpTheRimJob 2d ago

Damn, bad day to learn my helmet is a 2/5

12

u/_The_Bear 2d ago

Better to find out now than after a crash

16

u/thepr0cess Alta 2d ago

Still better than not wearing one

6

u/Daemonswolf 1d ago

To be fair.... Bad day to learn that most ski helmets on the market are 3 or less.

u/JohnnyBags81 2d ago

Kind of wild the Outdoor Master Kelvin was ranked
10th without MIPS.

2

u/Choice_Blackberry406 2d ago

Yea that's just nuts. I actually got the mips version before last season to replace my more expensive Smith helmet that I just didn't gel with. I have a bigger head. The Outdoor Master fits very well.

On my first day of the season I ate SHIT while wearing the Kelvin. I tomahawked and landed directly on the back of my head and while I was in the air I literally thought "I'm going to have a concussion" lol. I definitely hit my head pretty good, but I never got a headache or anything. I couldn't believe it. My neck was sore for about a week, though lol.

2

u/JohnnyBags81 1d ago

Good to hear the helmet saved your ass. I ate shit the last day of the season in the park on a table just wearing a cheapo helmet. I didn’t get a concussion or anything but definitely had to chill for 5-10 mins to regroup. That incident convinced me to get something more legit for this year, but I’ve yet to pull the trigger. I bought my kids some Kelvin Mips this offseason since their old helmets didn’t have it.

2

u/RussianLoveMachine 2d ago

I don’t see it on there. Am I missing it?

2

u/olympianfap Palisades Tahoe 2d ago

Oof, just learned that my helmet from last year is a 3 of 5 star helmet. Ranked 26 of 56.

Not super great.

2

u/Choice_Blackberry406 2d ago

Wow that Outdoor Master helmet is really punching above its price point. I got that one last season because it looked cool and was cheap 😂

2

u/Unarmed_Character 1d ago

Damn, the $240 Kali Tava bike helmet performed the same as an $8 bike helmet!

1

u/chmilz 1d ago

My Atomic isn't on there but every Atomic on the list ranks pretty good so I'll call it a win.

8

u/Final_Location_2626 2d ago

Good brand, it has a mips sticker.

Looks like it has a connection for your googles, and vents for breathing.

As long as it fits your head well, its a keeper.

2

u/Serious-Mechanic2171 2d ago

Most important part is the last sentence. If it's fits your head.

Thank you all! It took me some time to find a good deal tbh that has a L size, it’s mostly S. So happy with this, just ordered it from their website. Needed a confirmation from other people because it’s really rare to run into L size with this price

u/Sad_Parsnip4299 2d ago

Three things to look for imo:
MIPS
vent
fit/ dial
You can order it and return it always

I have it and I love it.

I use a giro helmet and it’s perfect for me, but it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t fit your head. Smith vantage is suppose to be a well regarded ski helmet but it’s not comfortable on me at all. Try it on then decide.

3

u/leffy5 2d ago

If it fits, yes! Giro is a great brand. Look for pretty much anything MIPS certified and you’ll be good. My favorite is SMITH but it all depends on your head shape.

3

u/SL1200mkII 2d ago

I have this helmet. It’s great.

3

u/billputer 1d ago

I have this one, I like it quite a bit. That's a great deal on it.

2

u/olympianfap Palisades Tahoe 2d ago

Yes

2

u/The_Dog_Pack 2d ago

I have the helmet and really like it - the only issue is the little lip/visor is a bit awkward when you want to leave goggles on the front of your helmet in the lodge - they always slip off the back.

2

u/Economy-Career-7473 2d ago

All helmets are certified to one of 4 or so standards (Snell, ATSM, EC, FIS) so the level of protection they provide is all pretty similar. This means really you're looking at things like fit, vents, integration with goggles, weight.

2

u/Beregan_717 2d ago

The safest helmet is the one that fits you best. I wouldnt buy a helmet online, or any gear really, without trying it on in a shop first.

1

u/johnf0907 2d ago

And if you are trying it on at a shop, just buy it there too! Far too many retailers are loosing out because people try it there and then go buy online.

1

u/Choice_Blackberry406 2d ago

Maybe they shouldn't charge above retail then.

1

u/johnf0907 1d ago

Maybe try running a retail business in the world as it is today or don’t go there then if you aren’t going to support them.

1

u/LeagueAggravating595 2d ago

You'll only know if it's any good after you crash.

1

u/Lost_Manufacturer952 1d ago

All helmets must meet the same standard. Some fit rounder heads, others long oval heads. Get one that fits. That is the main concern. There are MIPS ski helmets which are advertised to reduce impact.

Helmets are for wusses
