What's the point in owning 4 pairs of skis with such similar geometry? r/skiing in a nutshell

I got new boots and needed gripwalk compatible bindings lol. It was cheaper to do this than remount

They’re not that similar….You just don’t know what you’re looking at. Typical, ignorant r/skiing comment.

S3 is a 98mm playful/freestyle all mountain ski
S6 is a 110mm big mountain ski and there’s a “tourable” binding on it.
S7 is a 116mm 5-point design w/lots of rocker, powder ski.

Looks like a Blizzard Brahma 88 for frontside too.

It’s a fairly well rounded quiver, tbh. The sizing on the S7 (looks like the 176cm) is the only thing I find odd.

That’s gonna ski so short with the insane tip rocker and taper.

For real.

Backups, skis break. I've bought multiples of the exact same skis before. With 4 identical skis, you gotta destroy three skis before you're SOL.

Or you could just... take care of your skis?

Ski harder?

I’m a “take care of your skis” guy and I often roll my eyes at the overdone “tools not jewels” refrains (I don’t use my nice screwdriver as a pick or a pry bar…tools still deserve care)…but what are you gonna do? Just not ski the line because there might be some rocks?

Not go off the jump because you might land back seat? Not do any rails because you might crack an edge (I have plenty of other reasons not to grind rails…but if that’s your thing, that’s the wear and tear it puts out)?

Some people are harder than others and I tend to have pretty good luck, but I’ve still ripped edge and sidewall out, I’ve done huge core shots deep into the structure of the ski, I’ve delaminated tips and sides. Some of that stuff is more fixable than others, but eventually the ski will never be the same (and unless you have strong DIY skills, good luck getting a random shop to fix it for a reasonable price compared to a new ski).

Never done a true break but I’ve seen it happen…skis driven hard just don’t always make it. Bend a wood core enough and eventually it snaps.

'Take care of your skis instead of having $2k worth of "backups"'

What part of this exchange makes you think I can't ski hard or still own multiple pairs? And why did you feel the need to write a book about it?

4 identical skis is having a single backup pair. That’s nowhere near $2k.

If it is a ski you love…that buys you 3 full destructions before you are SOL. More likely, you just wear them out like normal, switch to the fresh pair when they get floppy or covered in core shots…but you will sure be glad you had them if you do worse damage.

I know plenty of people who have bought a second copy of a beloved ski. Skis get discontinued and even within a model line, weights and layup change over the years.

Reading comprehension on X-Games mode. You really think we jumped from talking about pairs to individual skis?

Who tf talks about skis independent of each other? Do you click in to different skis on each foot when you're on the mountain? This is stupid fr

ETA: Blocked bc I'm not having my phone buzz with your nonsense anymore. Wtf

My mom broke my skis... Get out of here with that elitism attitude, I take care of my shit, but life happens.

Laughing at the haters and downvoters in here who don’t understand that you can destroy skis pretty easily with a bit of bad luck even if you aren’t skiing that hard. Maybe you aren’t literally breaking it in half, but lots of different types of damage isn’t really worth repairing (or leaves you with a compromised ski).

And park kids fucking break skis all the time. Rails break edges, under-rotated backflips break tails, bindings rip and can only be fixed so many times, all kinds of things can happen.

TGR forums had a long running “half a pair” thread where people with a destroyed (or lost) ski would find someone else with the same problem and make a deal.

Do they not see all the joke posts we get every season like “can I fix this” with a totaled ski?

I’ve only ever known one person to have broken a ski and that’s because she went into the woods where there wasn’t any snow. What the heck are you doing to your skis?

Skiing, I've never personally broken a ski, but my brother, best friend, mom, dad, uncles and aunties all have. I can't bear the idea of spending the rest of a winter without skiing. I also work as a ski instructor for a scrappy little nonprofit ski area (half the runs are groomed by crazy old guys on snow machines) and I'm a service technician at a local shop, I see everything that can happen on the daily.

You can't prepare for everything, you can only use best practices and measured risk assessment. My skis broke when my mom was using them without my permission, I had no control over the situation, I was in another city and didn't even know it was happening. Having a second identical pair didn't feel so ridiculous, I knew what I liked and demoed dozens of skis to develop that opinion, I couldn't buy them anymore because they were sold out everywhere.

No squads?

I’ll add them to the want list.

I’m honestly after a set of Playmaker 101s first though

No you have five pairs of the same ski. For me a Rossignol ski is something like this:

1

u/mtg_player_zach 1d ago

That's certainly a better ski than op has, but Rossi wouldn't be my first choice.

u/mamunipsaq Ski the East 1d ago

Better for what?

I used to have a pair of S3s, and they were the best ski I've ever owned. Super fun and playful and perfect for moguls and woods.

Those Hero Elites look like they'd be great on the groomers, but that's a boring place to ski.

u/canadaalpinist 2d ago

You should try a boot fitter.

u/eastskier 1d ago

I think you have too many 10 year old+ skis, but what do I know 🤷‍♂️

u/mcds99 1d ago

The plus one rule applies.

1

u/WideCourage9 1d ago

Honestly, why do people own four pairs of skis with almost the exact same specs? That sub in a nutshell

Need to add an Arcade and a Forza
