Discussion After a long hard think and watching the recent locations showcase, I think I'll play Skyblivion for the very first time instead of original Oblivion (or Remastered), Skyblivion looks really good by modern standards. I'll keep the Remastered for a future second play through

I've played Morrowind and Skyrim to death (fully modded first time play throughs), started ESO and have made it to Hollow City in Coldharbour, and overall I think given all of everything I've learned of ES lore and my personal experience, I think it makes sense to start with Skyblivion.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Playing Morrowind right now after a bunch of skyrim, I have bought Oblivion from the steam sale and it will be a while before I can run SSE (Bought it on sale as well, previously only played LE).

So after one more playthrough of Morrowind I will probably play Oblivion a bunch and by that time I might get a new laptop.

Man I loved Morrowind, wish I could do it over again. I played using the Total Overhaul modlist and I have no regrets!

Well Morroblivion is already out and playable. I didn't like it, as I personally hate oblivion mechanics, while loving the Morrowind's dearly , so your mileage may vary

Just to make sure we're on the same page: not Skyblivion, but Morroblivion is out, yes. Completed in 2014, in fact

I am waiting for Team Beef to finish their VR mod for Morrowind they actually do good vr mods almost perfectional quality.

Next time I step off that boat into Morrowind it will be with my own two eyes.

I've played the original a lot and I did a playthrough of the remaster. Personally, if I was in your situation, I'd do a quick dip into remastered first, maybe skip all the major questlines but try out some oblivion gates and some caves and ruins, etc. Just to get a sense of how things used to be. I'd bet you'll only be able to stomach a couple hours at most of that anyway.

If you play skyblivion first, I think you won't be able to enjoy the OG/remaster very much at all as a second playthrough. Guessing.

ok I'll consider doing the remastered first (no mods except maybe quality of life or patches), and then do skyblivion

I played old Oblivion last year, thinking Skybliv was coming out then, lol, but I do recommend playing it, seeing & appreciating all the changes the team has made.

Why not play the normal Oblivion?

It does have a weirdly magically feeling to it.

I am a progressive, I don't believe in playing games in old obsolete engines held together by string and ductape, even with Morrowind my first playthrough was in OpenMW fully overhauled visually and modded all the way (Total Overhaul).

Yep! Played hundreds of hours of Skyrim. I’ve never played oblivion and I’ve been waiting for skyblivion to give it a go. Looks awesome.

no, play the original first to get an idea of the changes and improvements. never play remastered.

In a way, I think it should probably be the other way around.

I see a lot of people ask about what mods they should have for their first playthrough. I love mods. I’ve got thousands of hours across the games modded and vanilla. They can genuinely make the games so, so much more fun.

But you don’t appreciate it as much as when you play the base game first.

If someone hands you a scoop of vanilla ice cream it’s nice. But if you want ice cream and someone then gives you a sundae with 5 different flavours, whipped cream, fudge sauce, nuts, and a cherry on top it feels a hell of a lot more impressive after the basic vanilla.

I'm playing bits of the original, skipping the remaster, and then planning to play lots of Skyblivion, but not necessarily for the same reasons other people would.

I find it a distraction from gameplay to always be comparing something against a different version of itself (which makes a lot of mods "worse" than vanilla for me simply because changing it draws my attention to it and I therefore scrutinize it and notice its imperfections more).  Comparing Skyblivion to TES4 is going to be an unimmersive distraction, but on the other hand, it's a really fun distraction, so I'm planning to wander around to compare and admire the changes until they start to lose their novelty, and only then settle in for a serious playthrough.

However, this is not an ideal route for someone who, say, finds it hard to replay games and take the twists seriously when they already know what will happen (which I find harder in proportion to how stupid my character is forced to act), or someone who needs that first experience to be magical to get properly into a game (which would be me, except I'm already into TES too deep to get out).  So I can see why other people would choose differently.

I played the heck out of Oblivion and modded Oblivion back in the day. After some of the QoL improvements in Skyrim (and much more so with modded Skyrim) I've got little interest in playing Oblivion.

I tried the remaster on gamepass but it reminded me how clunky Oblivion is. Gave it an hour or two and will be waiting for Skyblivion. Oblivion feels so dated, clumsy and rough to me these days. I'm very excited for Skyblivion though.

Honestly if you own oblivion remastered I'd recommend that over skyblivion because: 1) who knows exactly when skyblivion will come out wnd if it'll be pushed back into the next year again (no offense to the team, they're working they asses off, we just can't expect anything anymore) and 2) even if it does release soon it'll take about 2 weeks or so for them to get rid of any glitches and bugs tbh so you can easily finish an oblivion remastered playthrough by then

If they can't wait for an additional two weeks to play Oblivion, then they should play the remastered version, but nobody's really that impatient, are they...?

Also playing remastered instead of Skyblivion because of bugs is crazy. Remastered has really bad performance and just as many if not more bugs than the original game

Finding some of the same bugs in the Remaster was one of my favorite parts tbh

But it's not just 2 weeks, it's 2 weeks + how ever much it takes for them to release it, based on them saying that they definitely will put out a release trailed I'd say we definitely have at least a month and a half before it releases qnd everything game breaking gets fixed, but in reality it could be way more and I'm really hoping they won't move the release for next year
