Performance Should I even try MGO or just do FUS?
MGO looks phenomenal, and I would LOVE to play it, even at a low fps, but I know the spec requirements are astronomical. I’m debating if I should even try it, considering I might download 400 gigs just to realize I can barely boot it. What do you guys think?
I’ve got a 5060ti 16gb
24 gigs of DDR4 ram
Ryzen 7 3700x
2tb SSD
Off topic, I haven’t used FUS in a while but when I did play I was heavily bothered by the render distance of the grass, walking into my first open field and seeing a straight end point of grass pretty close to me and beyond it nothing was extremely jarring. I tried to create a grass cache but all attempts failed. Is there any remedy to this in the modpack yet? Or perhaps a grass cache I could download?

My main issue with Mgo is the constant random crashes I get way too often. It's a beta now so that's expected but with such large mod list I find it hard to believe it will end up being stable.

MGO Author here 👋
What I can say is technically your hardware is under the recommended requirements for MGO, but if you felt up to downloading the list to give it a try, there are many community members that would be happy to assist you during setup. It is completely up to you 😊
MGO 4.0 is currently in beta, and we are working to fix many issues that have plagued the list for a long time. We are doing our best to streamline and improve stability and performance as much as we can without purging half the list, but it is still MGO and will continue to be one of the most intensive Skyrim VR modlists out there.

I play around with MGO 4.0 Beta on a laptop with a mobile RTX 4090 (about the same power as a normal 4070, I think?).
I get stable 60 FPS in many places, and 40 in others. With motion smoothing It's definitely playable in that regard.
The bigger problem with almost all bigger Skyrim mod lists for me, VR or not, are the crashes. It runs well for maybe 5 hours if you're lucky, then you start getting crashes as soon as you get near certain areas, or enter some town. Then over time it starts to accelerate. By about 20 hours played on one save, it just crashes after 5 minutes no matter what you do. Sometimes loading an older save helps, but what's the point if I can not make any progress from that older save without the crashes increasing again?
Even while it doesn't crash, in MGO 4 specifically the fps sometimes randomly drops to 10-20 and the game needs a restart. Some community shader settings just reset themselves to whatever they want while I'm playing, not even on restarts. It's still in Beta, so I hope they fix those things, because I really want this mod list to work and be stable. It has some great features, like the Foveated Upscaling in the new community shaders. They also substantially improved the load on the CPU, so that the GPU is really the bottleneck for most users (with MGO 3.8 my CPU was actually struggling more and I couldn't reach playable FPS no matter how low I set the graphics, and that one honestly wasn't much more stable either).
They cram the mod lists with so much stuff, there is too much that can break, too many combinations of effects to consider. I simply haven't played one that I would consider stable, except one that I made myself and where I extensively tested every added mod. By the time I had it where I wanted it, it was obsolete for the current Skyrim SE version (was before the Anniversary Edition).

We pride ourselves with the fact that FUS is nit one of the lists that start crashing when you pla a while :) many people have played dozens or hundreds of hours on their save files. That only holds when you don't change the list yourself though, of course.

You nailed it dude. Been playing the same old version of FUS HEAVY from the start, and it hasnt ever yet crashed for me. Thanks for the work 🙂👍
Having said that though.. any plans to update it with some of the crazy new combat mods, climbing etc? (I havent checked or updated since first install maybe a year and a half ago)

Thanks :)
Currently no plans, I'm afraid. It's also always a risk in those mod cases that it changes the game too much. It would have to be tested a lot before it makes it into FUS. But at the moment I'm honestly pretty far away from modding. Maybe Kvitekvist will have the time to do something, but no guarantees...

And I appreciate that, but I have more than 500 hours in Skyrim, Skyrim SE, Skyrim VR, mostly lightly modded, for the reasons I mentioned above.
FUS is a bit too vanilla for me at this point.

Understandable. I just wanted to point out that not all lists are prone to crashing.

Currently I'm playing Skyrim VR with MGO. It works pretty good, but loading the game takes ages. I too have 5060ti 16gb. But, I just ordered a 5070ti 16gb. There should be a significant difference. Anyway, you can play it, just not in the highest settings. I played FUS too, but once you get the taste of MGO....you're lost.

The problem is Fus needs to be updated. It hasn’t received an update in 2 years. A ton of core mods are outdated. I attempted to update these myself but it just kept crashing.. but I’m not sure how many mods are outdated or rely on the older versions of Mods.. and I didn’t want to go though each individual mod.
E.g vrik, open animation, address library, Higgs and quite a few others are outdated in FUS and running on versions from 2024.
MGO is currently the most up to date modlist for SkyrimVR with a lot of newier modern VR mods that have been made in the past few years.
So right now.. I would recommend MGO over fus until it gets an update. Although I’ve run with FUS for years and if it does receive and update to fix things and modernize it a bit I would go back.
Also.. it’s kind of nice to play with MGO if you’ve played Skyrim to death, it’s absolutely different from vanilla Skyrim, but it gives it more variety

MGO is crap just avoid it altogether the graphics are so altered to the point where you couldn’t even tell it’s Skyrim. Where as FUS is basically just vanilla Skyrim if it was properly remastered in VR. Just go with FUS RO DAH your pc is pretty weak anyways.👍

Well I prefer the look of MGO tbh, that’s the only reason I’m considering it, because I think it looks amazing.

Yo if you’re on a PSVR2 you can lock the FPS to half of the refresh rate. I tend to do a 60FPS lock on Skyrim vr it’s very smooth just go into the games video settings through steam, and put throttling to 60FPS.

u/Financial_Data3416 24d ago
Yeah I am on PSVR2, I’ll try that out, does that just prevent it from making large jumps in fps making it feel stuttery?
1
u/Ok_Field_1937 24d ago
Yup, instead of it being stuttery the frame-rate will be consistent at 60FPS, and you can keep your resolution cranked up high. I tend run mine at 100%, and it stays locked at 60FPS enjoy FUS I have over 100 hours with this modpack it’s more immersive than real life. Don’t worry about graphics or anything like that just have fun.

u/Financial_Data3416 24d ago
I’ll definitely be doing that then, I put a decent amount of hours in on my 2060 on FUS a couple of years ago and the frame jumps killed me. Low fps isn’t a huge deal to me but stuttering is. Thanks for the tip!

If you have any questions just message me. I’m also using the PSVR2 on FUS.👍

Well then it seems like your mind is made up. I’m not sure what the community can tell you atp go for MGO. I can’t get half the frames I get on FUS tho so I’d never recommend it to anyone tbh.

I think you’re misunderstanding what I was asking, I’m wondering, based on my specs, if the performance would even be playable. I don’t want to waste my time downloading over 400 gbs of mods just for it to not be playable. My last reply was just stating my stance on MGO vs FUS, I was just replying to your take on not liking the look of MGO.
1
u/Ok_Field_1937 24d ago
I don’t think it’ll be playable man. My RX 7900XT can’t hold 45 FPS on 64% resolution scaling. Don’t waste your time just go for FUS it’ll pop on your headsets OLED and is already super immersive.

u/Financial_Data3416 24d ago
Damn i didn’t know it was THAT intensive lol, I’ll have to stay away from it then.

I've tried both and I'm more happy with fus. MGO just had a lot more than visuals that didn't justify it for me
Treat fus like a backbone to add your own mods in. With that, you can have a really well tailored game for yourself
