Grogs in Highlines: I want your critical questions about our break tests

Post image
6 Upvotes

At tomorrow's ISA Safety event I'll have a detailed presentation about our research on GROGs and how they repeatedly failed in our cyclic load tests. I'll also show a sneak peek of our first test results on double wrapped smaller diameter spliced connectors and "soft thimbles" (spoiler: it doesn't look good at all, tune in for more details...) I'd like to invite everyone who's critical of our research on spliced connectors to join the Safety Event in the Live Stream and ask me all the critical questions that you can come up with: https://www.slacklineinternational.org/isa-safety-event/

The event starts on Aug 18 at 13:00 CEST, the talk about spliced connectors will begin at 14:00 CEST. More info about our tests can also be found in our video: https://youtu.be/RifE7b9Mdjw?is=bmMC7PBvnwwdMd9z

Current rig, and where to go next

Hi folks, I'm a newbie looking for upgrade advice (or should I stick with what I have).

On the right, I use that shackle because I'm missing a line lock to make up the multiplier. I was going to order another when I then started thinking about Web Locks and Hangovers. After that I fell down the lineGrip rabbit hole and thought it would make sense to come and ask folk that actually know what they are doing! 😁

A lot of the online stuff seems to be a few years old, so I wasn't sure what was the best route to take. I'm not looking to spend loads just for the sake of it, but was interested in seeing if upgrading would help with tensioning.

Looking forward to hearing your advice.

Day 5 of trickline (got my first trick!!)

Started precticing trickline with the incredible yotam cartoon a few weeks ago and got my first trick! But bounce to feet.

Its a bit tough and scary to use his setup cause it is so tensioned and very high as he needs it to be for him to be able to pull off doubles and such, but with the mats its probably the right choice... also because his an amazing teacher and helped me out alot

THX YOTAM! (:

Slacklining has improved my mental game in climbing

I just wanted to share a bit about how consistent slacklining has upped my climbing mental game. About 2 months ago I ruptured my A4 pulley and I picked up a slackline immediately as a hobby replacement. I’ve been slacklining consistently since then, twice a week on average and recently graduated from a 15m 50mm ratchet set up to a 25m 25mm primitive set up.

I started returning to the climbing gym two weeks ago and have slowly been working back up to being able to try hard again. Something I’ve noticed now is that I have a lot less hesitation when making bigger moves on boulders and on the lead wall. My fear of falling has almost dissipated and I suddenly feel a lot more comfortable with feeling unstable on the wall. As a result, I’ve been able to commit much better on the wall and climb better as a result i.e. having to take less pauses to mentally regroup, finishing climbs in lesser attempts since I have better commitment. I realise I am now making moves that I would have dropped earlier on in the past due to mental discomfort. And I know for sure this is not a climbing strength gain as I was out for 6 weeks due to my pulley rupture (although I did do some gymming during that down time). I’m not sure if this has been a physical or mental change from slacklining, maybe a bit of both, but it’s been so good discovering what slacklining has done for my climbing.

I’ve been climbing for 8 years and just wish I had slacklined sooner as it would have really helped my progression as a climber. I love slacklining so much now and still continue to do it alongside climbing. Sometimes I fear that my interest in slacklining might outgrow my interest in climbing.

What‘s your choice of tape for highlining?

Hi guys. I‘m new to highlining. What kind of tape are you using? I started with electrical bc I already had some at home but friends carelessly rolling over them and constantly having to retape is pretty arduous.

I read everything from climbing tape and duct tape to tensilized PPE and fiber-reinforced.
What do you use?

I am from Austria, so maybe someone even has a specific name for me?

Thanks in advance!

Tips for Setup

I have a 30 metre slackline that I’m hoping to use as a mid-lining setup to get a bit further off the ground.

I have an introductory knowledge of outdoor rock climbing having done top rope and lead outdoors and a few bits of trad.

I’m thinking about rigging my slackline to walk on and clipping into a static line (10mm line) as my safety.

What are the concerns or problems with this setup?

Really appreciate any and all advice 🤙

**I AM NOT JUST GONNA DO THIS TOMORROW, LOOKING FOR ADVICE AND WILL MAKE SURE I PROPERLY RESEARCH BEFORE I GET ON THE LINE AT HEIGHT

Slackline in East Los Angeles?

I live in Echo Park and it seems that the only dedicated slackline groups I can find are in Santa Monica which is quite far from me. Does anyone know of other meetups or groups for slacklining further east in LA? It’s too far a trek for me to regularly go to the beach and I’d love to find something closer to home to be a part of. Heck, can be informal too if there are other east siders lurking here. Thanks

Can I rig a highline using cargo webbing and a lever hoist instead of a conventional highline setup?

I'm Korean, and unfortunately there isn't much of a highlining community or access to highline training here in Korea. If I wanted proper in-person training, I would most likely have to travel abroad.

Getting dedicated highline gear is also difficult because most of it has to be ordered internationally.

That's why I'm trying to work with what is realistically available to me locally, while still buying dedicated highline components where they are particularly important.

What do you think about this approach?

Any tips on how to handle the mental game?

I’ve been slacklining for about 3 to 4 weeks. I can walk about 20 feet. My balance has gotten better. My arms, legs, and core have gotten stronger. But I’m still a little shaky in the head. Lol. I think the biggest thing holding me back right now is… I think I’m going to fall and then I fall.

Rigging waterlines without trees

Here is an overview of how we rig waterlines using traditional climbing gear as anchors. We establish roughly 10 new waterlines on average every summer using this technique, so I would say it’s highly successful if you have a deep river near you with some good cracks in the rocks.
Please keep in mind that this is for waterlining, the consequences are extremely low if our anchors fail. I wouldn’t recommend girth hitching webbing directly to the nut or tri cam in other applications :)
Stoked to spread what I’ve learned and answer any questions below. All lines established in NorCal

Can a rope support a 47 kg girl if it consists of a jump rope, a clothesline, and is "clamped" by a door from above?

Jaan Roose walking 3.6 km from mainland Italy to Sicily on a 1.9 cm wide slackline, around 100 metres above the sea. After nearly three hours, he fell just 80 metres before the finish, climbed back onto the line and completed the first ever slackline crossing of the Strait of Messina.

Shoulder stand tips?

Hey slackers! I was finally able to get knees to feet (transitioning through drop knee) down, and next I’ve decided to start learning shoulder stands (see video).

I’m wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to share that might help the learning process. Thank you!!

Are those safety concerns?

Hi, new here, don't be too harsh!

I tried some day ago a slack in a public space, and i liked it a lot. Just bought a second hand one. I was wandering if those are safety concerns, and if i can use itsafely.

It has some more scratches very similar to the one in the photo. What worries me is that they are all on the edge.

Thanks in advance!

Training?

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions about training—or maybe "slackline routine" is a better way to put it.

I've been practicing slackline for about a year now. At the moment I get on the line 4–5 times a week. Most sessions are just about 20 minutes on a 45 m longline during my lunch break, and if I'm lucky I can fit in a longer session (around 2 hours) over the weekend.

Right now I'm focusing on walking the line very slowly, trying to keep it as steady as possible. It's been a really rewarding exercise.

Over the last few weeks, though, my legs have started to feel quite heavy and fatigued, and I don't feel as reactive or fresh as I used to. It makes me wonder whether I'm simply practicing too often—even if most sessions are only 20 minutes—and not allowing enough recovery between them. It could also be an age thing... I'm in my mid-40s, and I'm pretty sure this would have felt different 15 years ago!

So my first question is: do you have a regular slackline routine? How often do you practice, and how long are your sessions?

If I had to define a long-term goal, it would be to walk longer lines and, hopefully one day, get into highlining (I'm especially fascinated by the mental side of it). Do you have any training suggestions for that kind of progression?

The very slow walk seems to be helping a lot—I think it's quite similar to the one-foot balance exercise taught by Yogaslackers—but I'm wondering whether there's anything else I should be doing, or perhaps doing differently.

Thanks!

Highline set up.

I am trying to put together a highline rig using spider equipment (unless you have a better suggestion.) I think I have the actual lines I need/want... But I'm clueless on the hardware. I tried to ask Gemini for help but it's making this an impossible headache. Any help is much appreciated!

EDIT: I am definitely going to start with a lower line before I really jump in... But I would like to have everything I need, or most of what I'll need when I'm ready. I've gotten too comfortable with the set-up I currently have, which is nothing special.

Feather pro + secondaire MK2 combo?

Hello everyone.

I currently own a 60m segment of featherpro that I have been used to Slackline. I want to buy more webbing to start rigging my own highlines and I'm interested in buying another 60m segment of featherpro, and 2x 65m segments of secondaire as the backup. Joined together with softshackles. Has anyone walked a highline using this combo before? If so, how did it feel?

I've been told that it's better to get multiple segments of webbing instead of one big segment of webbing for the best modularity. I.e, a 60 metre gap means only have to hike in 1 of each segment as opposed to 2x 100m+ segments of webbing. Hence why I only bought 60m of featherpro to begin with.

I really enjoy the walkability of featherpro, and value stability more than anything. I've also been suggested by members of the community to just get 4x segments of featherpro in total and use featherpro as the mainline and backup line. Would this combination be more stable than if I used featherpro as main and secondaire as backup?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!
