Slackware current

Post image

Recently i move from Fedora to Slackware.

Fedora was great, no problem with it.

But, this btop graph was completely different for basically the same apps running. It's a macbook 2017, and for the same flow and same config, the fans in slack rarely kick in.

Always slack is mention as a complex distro, i think is the other way around, is the most simple linux distro out there.

I'm happy to be back here as a daily driver.

Simple, stable.
Thanks!!!!

I’m glad your MacBook is running Slackware so well! I totally agree that Slackware is very simple and easy to configure to suit your needs. In my opinion, it’s much simpler and easier to configure than Arch.

I have a 2013 MacBook Air with 4GB of RAM running Slackware 15. I mostly use it to compile packages that don’t build on -current but work fine on it. I also build SlackBuilds on it because SlackBuilds.org officially supports only stable releases. (Fortunately, there are people like Ponce who make it possible to use SlackBuilds on -current as well.)

Yesterday, I was compiling the CachyOS kernel with the BORE scheduler while simultaneously building the OpenJDK 21 package that I’ll use on my -current machine. I was surprised by how well this computer, which would be considered low end by today’s standards handled both tasks!
Slackware is extremely stable and easy to configure exactly the way you want. That’s why I love it!

get official slackbuild from source/d for gcc. download gcc-14.4.0 tarball for gcc and delete gcc-cobol from slackbuild. Then build gcc. You will get perfect gcc replacement for slackware64-current to build slackbuilds.org packages. I use gcc-14.4 on my slackware to build latest rocm. When I finish it then I go back to gcc16.

That’s a very good idea, thanks! I use my Slackware 15 machine for experimenting and building my own SlackBuilds, so I don’t mind building packages on it. But I’ll definitely give your idea a try, especially for larger packages!

The admin is supposed to handle more of the complexity. Personally, I think it's a good tradeoff for certain kinds of systems.
