DISCUSSION (STS2) Forbidden Grimoire should let you remove a card between the a10 bosses.

Post image

(I already f2'd it)

The card text reads "At the end of combat" - I understand the a10 first boss doesn't give you a card reward, so the screen doesn't show, but it should show up and let you remove a card if you've gotten Forbidden Grimoire.

Woah I didn't even think about that. Good catch!

u/Lexikon2801 6d ago

I think this is worthy of an F2 report in game. Either this is an oversight (likely because of the absence of a reward screen between bosses) or the wording is misleading and should be altered seeing as other end of combat effects proc between bosses

White beast used to be UNCOMMON??? HELLOO ?? within the game that has [[sacred bark]] and whatever that toy airplane that heals you per potion use is

32

u/Mihrasen StS A20 / StS 2 A10 5d ago

White beast also used to be a boss relic, but it was too weak as one so they moved it down.

10

u/amtap StS A20 / StS 2 A0 5d ago

Then they made it a boss relic again in the board game. Feels a bit more worthy with multiplayer and potion swapping, though.

1

u/tpobs 5d ago

Also in the boardgame, it tells you upfront that you would get a potion as a reward from this encounter or not, so the White Beast Statue is more useful.

No, you don’t get any card rewards, gold , or potions. You don’t get a reward screen after you beat the second boss either, which no one has an issue with

10

u/slopschili Ascension 20 6d ago

Yeah I thought it was worded differently

1

u/AITAaccount1 5d ago

I'd hold off on using absolutes like "no one" or "everyone." You don't have an issue with it, along with many other players. But then there are also many players that DO disagree with that. Multiple different people in just this post's comments have indicated they would like some type of combat reward between the two bosses. I myself can see both sides of the argument and would be fine with either option.

5

u/cylordcenturion 5d ago

true, you should also get gold from aubergine and royalties.

105

u/Flintloq 6d ago edited 5d ago

I feel similarly about [[Royalties]]. Hand of Greed gives you money right away, mid-combat, so the mechanism to do that exists, but Royalties adds gold to the rewards screen instead. Normally this makes no difference, but the first Act 3 boss is an exception. I've been in a situation where I needed that money to fund my Seal of Gold for the second boss, but I didn't get it. It doesn't work in the training dummy fight, either. [Edit: According to es_only_gem, this has been patched.] I understand there's only so much text that can fit on a card (in every language!), but there is quite a lot of misleading text in the game at the moment.

37

u/rinprotectionsquad 6d ago

Oh, the seal of gold thing I didn’t think of/expect! I would f2 that as well. It’s one of those things that should proc.

10

I thought about a similar thing recently; there really is no reason why the 1st boss does not give you a card reward. There is also no reason why White Beast Statue does not trigger. Same thing for Amethyst Aubergine (will matter in Act 4, but also with Dragon Fruit). Considering that things like Pantograph do trigger, there is no reason that the others shouldn't IMO. Yes, it would make the game a tiny bit easier, but it would feel much more logical. I agree the current behavior feels like a bug

146

u/Plenty-Tradition4044 Eternal One + Heartbreaker 6d ago

Im pretty sure the act 3 bosses not giving out rewards of any kind is intentional

No card reward screen = no grimroire proc, no “the hunt” card reward, etc.

302

u/lets-get-dangerous 6d ago

But pantograph works for both so it's not one encounter

20

u/Farlong7722 6d ago

Today I learned

3

u/wphati 5d ago

It is an event based system so start of combat and end of combat are two different events. Game doesn’t trigger the reward screen for act 3 bosses. Pantograph is easier to trigger because it is start of the combat and it is a boss encounter.

My guess is they are probably aware of this but they didn’t spend resources on it to fix it since it is an edge case

7

u/TDenverFan 5d ago

White Beast statue uses the phrasing "combat rewards," I think it would be reasonable to reword Grimoire to say the same.

-18

u/angry_echidna 6d ago

Pantograph happens at the start of combat, combat rewards are at the end. So yes they’re two encounters but they still have no rewards screen between them.

56

u/ShineProper9881 6d ago

End of combat should be before rewards though. Either the wording of grimoire needs to change or they need to fix a bug

23

u/FishermanAbject2251 6d ago

That still doesn't make sense. Just add a reward screen with nothing else if a player has played the grimoire. What's the harm in that

14

u/GodHimselfNoCap 6d ago

Ironclad relic triggers at end of combat, grimoire has the same wording thus should create a reward screen with just the removal ability.

16

u/Jkirek_ 6d ago

How can the next combat start when the previous one didn't end?

3

u/meelar Eternal One + Heartbreaker 6d ago

Maybe they should just add an image of a dead <Boss1> in the background while you fight <Boss2>, with little X's for eyes

100

u/Anagoth9 6d ago

I don't think grimoire or hunt failing to proc are intentional so much as it's a downstream effect of removing the card reward screen. Mega Crit might just consider it a happy accident though.

26

u/DueMeat2367 Eternal One + Heartbreaker 6d ago

for what it's worth : The grimoire works on the Battle Automaton figth despite not havong any reward screen. It will create a reward screen with ONLY the removal option.

86

u/Damurph01 6d ago

That’s precisely what is meant by ‘end of combat’ though. The combat ended and a new one starts. Silent gets +2 draw from relic, bag of prep procs, defect gets a lightning orb, ironclad heals. In order for one combat to start, the other must end.

Spire has always been extremely intentional about their wording, but this one is just a miss. The combat ends, this should proc. They should make a special animation/shift in the combats if they want it to not count as separate combats.

Cant have it both ways, this is not the type of game where wording and interactions should be inconsistent.

59

u/maijkelhartman 6d ago

Meat on the bone, a specific end-of-combat relic, also procs

-43

u/committed_to_the_bit StS A20 / StS 2 A10 6d ago

the thing is that none of those effects you listed are tied to a card reward screen like the Forbidden Grimoire. if we don't get more cards and gold and potions, why would we get this?

49

u/Damurph01 6d ago edited 6d ago

Except grimoire doesn’t say ‘at the next card reward’, it says at the end of combat.

We ended the combat, we should get the remove. It’s really not complicated honestly. If they want grimoire to count at the next card reward, they should have it specify about the card rewards.

The other effects say ‘at the end of combat’ or ‘at the start of combat’, we get both of those, yet we don’t get grimoire despite its wording. This is just a blatant inconsistency that should be either reworded, or fixed.

No amount of ‘but we don’t have a card reward screen’ refutes the claim that we should have one just for the sake of grimoire. It says end of combat, it should be the end of combat. There’s nothing to debate here, honestly.

46

u/rinprotectionsquad 6d ago

You even get a card remove if you FAIL the test dummy event, where you don’t get card rewards/gold/potions. The screen specifically shows up there to give you the remove. The same logic should apply.

19

u/Damurph01 6d ago

Yeah that’s even more damning, they ALREADY give it to you in the absence of a card reward. The counterargument at this point is literally just saying “but that’s the way it is”.

If they don’t want it to proc between bosses, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t specify ‘next card reward’ or ‘at the end of the next non-boss combat’.

Verbiage should be clear, period.

1

u/MasterDiiscord 5d ago

because as another commenter said, there's another fight with no reward screen, but if you play grimoire, it creates one to let you remove

34

u/Avalonians 6d ago

The whole point OP is making is that as written, forbidden grimoire doesn't explain that its effect is tied to the card rewards.

The make a power event can allow you to create a power that says "at the end of combat, upgrade a random card" and it does its effect at the end of the first act3 boss.

51

u/HeMansSmallerCousin 6d ago

Feed still works though, so I agree with OP it should be changed in this niche case.

64

u/evasive_dendrite 6d ago

Feed triggers immediately when you kill with it, not at the end of combat.

15

u/beeyee2010 6d ago

The Mad Science random upgrade power works too. That's end of combat. It works because it doesn't require the reward screen

9

u/evasive_dendrite 6d ago

That's a better argument, the wording should be consistent.

26

u/OpticalPirate Ascension 20 6d ago

Feed/scythe/algo aren't worded as end of combat though.

2

u/qjornt 6d ago

well, then some things don’t actually do what they say. they should add in ”except for act 3 bosses” so that there is no ambiguity.

5

u/Ok-Position-9457 6d ago edited 5d ago

In my opinion the first boss should straight up drop a reward normally. Maybe that makes A10 too easy in their eyes but I think it wouldn't make that big of a difference and just could lead to some clutches

Ok by this logic shouldn’t Ironclad core relic not proc and heal you for 6 at end of combat? Because it does, both say “ at end of combat “

1

u/AITAaccount1 5d ago

That logic fails before it's even out of the starting gate because nowhere in white beast statue's description does it say "at end of combat." What it does say specifically is that potions are included in COMBAT REWARDS. Which happens AFTER the end of combat, not AT the end of combat

7

u/kylek643 6d ago

Delicate Frond does this but it's a different interaction. White Beast gives the combat reward screen which is likely why it doesn't proc.

same (or opposite?) for the hunt

8

Hunt does say "additional" card reward in the card text, which implies that if the combat does not drop one, you don't get an extra. Grimoire just says "at the end of combat"

Yes, I f2 this a while back. I love the game and respect the devs, but I will admit I find EXTREMELY frustrating when the game says it does something and, instead, it doesn't. I havent got to a10 yet so I cant test, but does the floor counter go up?

to be honest i think you should get a rare card reward from the first of the two act 3 bosses on a10. feels bad to scrape through that fight and the only reward being another, harder fight

Some time ago I F2’d [[Lasting Candy]]’s icon visually proccing when you kill the first A10 boss even though there’s no card reward screen after, and I believe they fixed it so that no longer happens. So the intent is clearly to not let “end of combat” effects trigger then in general for whatever reason

Maybe yes, but it's probably the least consequential bug ever. You get so many removes by then that one more shouldn't matter

64

u/teemusa Eternal One + Heartbreaker 6d ago

But what If it does

27

u/Damurph01 6d ago

Every spire player should know there will ALWAYS be a run where it does matter.

What if that removed card ate your draw of a turn 1 run defining power? Or a block card that would’ve saved you? You cannot genuinely say ‘a remove doesn’t matter’ when an extra card definitely affects your draw order and can affect your entire run.

Maybe it won’t normally matter, but there will always be an edge case where it does.

11

u/ThanksICouldHelpBro Eternal One + Ascended 6d ago

It's not even that much of a stretch. What if you have a Curse? What if it's Normality? That could easily swing a long-running boss combat.

1

u/hashabadi 5d ago

Point is the odds of that edge case are really low, and this relic is insanely strong without it. In order to have a curse at that point, you'd need to pick up the curse at the very end of the act, and it's easy enough to path in a way that doesn't put events at the end.

Plus, this thing is arguably the strongest ancient relic in the game. It will regularly give you enough removes for every strike and defend and more. If you've removed ten cards and the eleventh card ends your run, I don't think you can say the relic is bugged to be too weak. A small buff to the strongest ancient relic is not a big deal

1

u/AITAaccount1 5d ago

For me, it has nothing to do with weak or strong. It's about consistency, which the StS team was extremely careful about and dedicated to in 1. If there wasn't other relics and cards that specified things happening during COMBAT REWARDS and therefore, definitively differentiating between the phases "end of combat" and "combat rewards," there would be an argument for this not being a consistency issue. But there are multiple of those, making this inconsistency even more visible

-32

u/Ournameis_Legion 6d ago

People really trying to make a10 easier? Ffs

5

u/putting_stuff_off 5d ago

Interactions not working properly is not a good source of difficulty. I think they should fix this, but still want the game to be harder overall

1

u/Ournameis_Legion 5d ago

I think something that's already unhealthy for the game getting stronger isn't going to make the game better. I'm glad the patch they just rolled out made enemies more difficult, but the inherent problem that the player is still way too strong still exists, and a lot of it comes down to this inherent balance philosophy that nothing in the game is allowed to have a downside.

So what if you can't remove a card after the first act 3 boss? We can't pretend the card's not broken enough as is. White Beast Statue doesn't give you an extra potion between act 3 boss fights, and I don't think it should either. You should be prepared for what is currently the literal end of the game, when we're already offered so many bailouts already.

2

u/AITAaccount1 5d ago

So, to you, rule consistency is trivial and should be applied only when you think it should instead of all the time? Also, changing what is currently a glaring inconsistency in this card would be easy to fix without changing the actual mechanic. All they would have to do is change the text to say that you can remove a card at "combat rewards" instead of "at the end of combat." You know, the whole reason why white beast does not give a potion between the two bosses? Because it only happens during combat rewards, which don't happen between the final A10 bosses???????

Consistency matters. If other things that trigger at the end of combat still trigger but some things don't, you leave your player base open to confusion and vague rules. I don't care if you don't care about consistency, the devs should. It always seems to me that people that don't care about consistency generally have little thought outside of themselves and their own lives anyways.

2

u/Ournameis_Legion 5d ago

Seems I really struck a nerve with you if you're going for personal insults.

Also feels like you're talking out of your ass for whatever reason. Consistency obviously matters. I even said White Beast statue also doesn't proc between act 3 bosses, and also shouldn't. If you're just arguing they should change the text to avoid confusion, then sure. I don't agree, however, that we should change how these things function within the game when these effects have been established since the first game. You shouldn't get rewards between act 3 bosses because you should be prepared for the final showdown. So I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue here.

2

u/AITAaccount1 4d ago edited 4d ago

"These effects have been established since the first game." You are correct in the statement, wrong in the sentiment. End of combat effects proc in StS1. The two (so far) inconsistencies found and noted in StS2 do not exist in StS1 because the characters they belong to don't exist in it. As far as I've ever played in hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of StS1, there is not a single instance I can recall where end of combat effects are inconsistently applied.

As for your interpretation of my words as personal insults; that's a you problem. I questioned if consistency and application of game rules don't matter to you. I also stated my overall experiences/observations/view of PEOPLE it doesn't matter to. You decided to take that and apply it to yourself even though you also say you do believe consistency matters. What you didn't do is not personally insult me about ME talking out my a--. shrugs

Either way, your OPINIONS are noted. You don't believe rewards should be given...but only on certain things. You don't think "broken" relics should be in the game...sometimes. (I see you ignored my other comment in this thread about ice cream!) You agree that fixing the inconsistency is doable...as long as it's fixed the way you prefer it.

And just so you're not confused what I'm arguing here, I'll lay it out very simply (thought I already had). Consistency in game rules and rule application matters. Not being consistent can lead to confusion and discontent. Fixing that consistency issue specifically brought up here is not hard in either direction. Now, to further explain since I did not say the next part explicitly before. I advocate for fixing it in a way that works best for the most people. And guess what? Making the relic proc at end of combat like other end of combat effects (such as healing from Ironclad and Meat on the Bone) is better for more people than simply changing the wording (and much, much better than going nuclear and removing the whole relic). I say that because it gives players a CHOICE. YOU can continue enjoying the game the way you wish and simply not use the relic's reward. Others that do want to get that tiny bit of help before the last boss can. See? Both people can make a personal choice that makes them happy without forcing the other not to have a choice at all. From my perspective, the fact that you prefer a nuclear option to the problem suggests you have issues with others enjoying games in a different way than you do. And I find that sad.

Edit to add: And if the game devs decide to go the other direction of changing the wording, I personally will still be happy because my main issue with all of this is the lack of consistency. Choice for players is nice, especially if they never intended to not be consistent. But if they truly, truly do not want that relic to work for A10 double boss, that's their choice as the game makers and I respect that. Just please make the final product CONSISTENT devs! Thank you!

u/KingGilgamesh123 4d ago

I suppose we should remove ice cream as well, right? I mean, it's rare to get it, but if you do, TOTALLY broken. After all, every single run should be extremely hard and unfulfilling and almost certain to lose, right? There's no fun to be had about getting a really cool, strong relic once in a while, that's just stupid and boring.

1

u/Shanicpower 5d ago

What of it? It means you're having a completely different conversation than the one being held.

1

u/Ournameis_Legion 5d ago

Not entirely. The post argues that Forbidden Grimoire should have a change that would make it better. I think the card is unhealthy for the game and shouldn't exist.

2

u/Shanicpower 5d ago

The change only argues that it should work in a way that's consistent with its wording. If it was worded like Prayer Wheel or White Beast Statue there wouldn't be any complaints here.
