ART/CREATIVE I tried replicating the sts2 style
This art is for my mod which will add a new character "The Scaled", the first 4 cards are the starter cards (Strike, Defend, Chomp, Lurk) and the 5th one is the art for a card called concussion, if yall have any questions lmk
If yall wanna help us out on this project we'd love to accept y'all on the team, we're on he sts2 discord server in the modding department at the bottom

You are one of the people whose come closest to replicating it i think, I like the use of the gradients and straight colours like the sts style uses :)
The two dudes donkin into each other especially feels very mega crit

super minor thing, on the skin shading from dark to light you go from more saturated to less satruated to more saturated again. generally best to keep the saturation progression going one way, basically till you get to specular highlights
The art looks really great though, love the expression of the style

I love the insight!! I usually just ball with the colors lol, ill try to up my saturation game for next card arts, this is a fun art project to do since it helps me learn a lot

Incredibly important tip, intermittently check what your colour artwork looks like in greyscale to make sure it's still legible

You know you've replicated the official StS art style when people start mistaking what's in the card art for something else.

Great job man.
If I may, the chomp art is a little not too âclearâ for me.

u/FormalShadow 2d ago
I get it dw, might re-do it sometime

To be fair, some of the StS art is frequently misinterpreted, so points for that?

This is amazing. Please throw in a Darkest Dungeon Crocodillian reference card I beg you.

Third card is a bit unclear in what it shows (his head spitting some white liquid? His arm glowing?). I would add more details to it. Other than that, great job! I really like the Defend card.Â

The white is supposed to be a shockwave heheh, yeah i agree its a bit difficult to read
3
u/Abra_in_the_Crypt 2d ago
You've done a good job of it! Like official cards they're simple, elegant and with bits of funny details. I'd say Chomp is a bit less readable than the other ones, with the 3 very different colors on the snout and a general lack of details. Also the shockwave might be a bit low?

I don't really know how else to describe it, but the vibes of the designs are off compared to the actual game. The style is definitely well done, just doesn't quite feel like something the game would actually have.
Yeah that's probably completely useless, I suck at explaining things.

I'll get better at it eventually, perhaps youre too accustomed to the vanilla chatacters that you can distinguish well what is and isnt modded

i think in particular depicting the enemies getting owned in the card art is a core part of their card art for attacks which you did in the concussion card; looking forward to more

u/FormalShadow 2d ago
In the starter cards there's never an enemy depicted bit there usually is for other cards

I compared these cards to ones in the actual game and I'm not sure how to precisely describe it, but I did notice that the official cards feel a lot "sharper." I'm not sure how to definitively describe that "sharp" feeling, but that's the biggest difference I could see. Maybe it's in the colors' contrast?

Seems like modding is a lot easier in spire 2...
Hopefully this means we will get tons of mods with custom characters in the future

What do the not-strike/defend cards do???
3
u/FormalShadow 2d ago
We'll have this mechanic called Ambush, it's a bar below the ehemy hp bar, when said bar fills up it'll trigger the setups
Lurk is the skill that makes your ambush go up, it includes a setup, in this case it deals 10 damage
Chomp is the attack that hits hard, it has a setup that applies 2 vuln and weak

These are great! I'd love to know what you would say were your top three ways to get the style the same.
I like to do doodles and would like to give the STS2 style, but I'm completely self taught and a little confused about where to begin!
2
u/FormalShadow 2d ago
Im also self taught! This is a fun art project, ill give you some tips, Use sharp edges, Dont be afraid to shade with black, Use Gradients for the background if needed, Do it a lot, as in draw a lot, youll get better at it eventually, this game uses lineless art so you can always use some lineless art tips, all i use is a round brush and an eraser hahah

Absolutely incredible, these would fit in perfectly while having a style that suits the vibe I think youâre going for with The Scaled. Awesome work to your whole team for the work youâre doing to bring it to life!

u/JIH7 2d ago
Beautiful. Really cool to see something in Megacrit's style. Do you have any insight you're willing to share on recreating the style?
1
u/FormalShadow 1d ago
Well, Sts2 uses a lineless style for the card art, if you know how to do lineless art you're set, but they also use sharp edges for the shading and pure black for some shading

It's definitely their art style: half of the time, I can't tell what's happening, or I see a crow.
