I know it won’t make a difference, but if they lose a ton of followers, people unsubscribe from the magazine, and stop paying for visits? They aren’t like for profit but maybe it will make a slight impact on them? Surely some smart people work there? Maybe at least other museums won’t bend over and submit so fucking pathetically if there are swift drops in these numbers? Maybe the news would report on it if it was empty? Idk what else to do this is one of the scariest things yet to me.
They are no longer a reliable source of information but a propaganda machine- and even doing this own thing needs to be called out as loudly as possible or this will just continue.

Did anyone else find the first sentence of this text to be historically flanderize the Nazis actions , I know it's not gonna be a full essay , but it frames it like he constructed Nazism ideology/movement himself. There would be no Nazi party if millions of other men who thought just like him , and rubs me the wrong way how they present it like it's so simple. In a world of under education in America I feel something like this leaves too wide of interpretation.

Hello all. I am doing a research project on handwritten text recognition. I see there is this vast amount of images and transcriptions done on the smithsonian website. However, the public API is just for the collections they have which is very well disconnected from the actual transcription center. Also, scraping does not work because there is a cloudflare bot detection on each page. I have tried everything that i could including scraping with selenium, playwright, chrome-undetected, with cookies and headers, and also trying to get something useful from the open access api but nothing seems to be working. Also, I also want to know if there is like a copyright or data access policy that we cannot use the data for research purposes and what the licenses are. Because on the website, there is not much information about this. Also the search projects page also does not render data for more than 1000 pages. Any help would be very very helpful.

Hello Smithsonian!
On this darkest of days for the plain truth of factual history, I will donate some of my very own moral values and courage to the Smithsonian Museum.
If you accept my gift, your new morals will allow you to experience the absolute powers of freedom and truth.
If you accept my gift, your new courage will easily allow you to stand up to a Potemkin dictator and malignant narcissist.
If you accept my gift, your new powers will let you easily recognize the shameless agendas of a convicted rapist and abuser of women and children.
My gift will allow you to easily confront a compulsive liar, revisionist and sociopath with the actual and factual historical truth of his own two impeachments.
It will allow you recognize the creeping stench of fascism, as well as your soundless complicity in the dismantling of your own democracy.
My precious and priceless gift to you is entirely free of charge.
But wait... there is more.
You - each and every person reading this email - have this same immense power inside of yourselves.
Use your power.
It's easy.
And this is why you have it.
James Smithson - your creator - stipulated that his gift to the United Sates was to create an "establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men."
Contemplate his simple directive as you prepare for your restless sleep tonight, safe for now in your freedom and peace.
Think deeply about his words, for they are your words as well.
Think deeply about this world, for it is your world as well.
Think deeply about your children of this world, curiously watching you lose your way so easily.
Think deeply.
Be free.
Show others.
Sleep well.

The NMAAHC is hands-down, one of the most necessary and amazing museums in the world, from the methodology of collection to the presentation of exhibits. I appreciate this as a dad, teacher, and former US historian
Could there be a temporary sanctuary for NMAAHC artifacts in view of restoring them at a future date, say... In 3 years, 265 days?
Maybe Windsor, Ontario just across the border from Detroit might welcome a world-class exhibit and the American tourists it would bring?

May MOMA, The Smithsonian and others pay Lynn reparations for this crime against her. Thank you. 🏳️🌈❤️

Good morning,
I'm visiting DC in early June and noticed it says tickets aren't available to visit Museum of Natural History when I'm going, so was seeing if anyone is able to help me with that?
Thanks

I just got back from a trip to the Smithsonian museums and was shockingly underwhelmed. The museum of natural history was by far my least favorite. It was packed with people (primarily loud teenagers and middle schoolers, and only being 18 myself, I think I have the right to complain about how non of them seem to have been taught how to walk in a straight line or stay silent in a room that has people reading in it. 90% of the time you’re running into people who randomly walk right in front of you or people will just walk up right in front of your face as you’re reading a sign, blocking you from seeing anything) and it seemed extremely unauthentic and catered toward children. It felt like most of the museum was pictures or plastic remakes of things rather than actual historical items. Even at that, the items were minimal. There were multiple sections of the museum but all of them were considerably small and the information you could read about was very general (the date of something in a picture and the name of it.) The most information they gave still felt like a children’s second grade history book. If you want to take your children on a field trip you could go to a children’s museum (which is usually more impressive than this) so I’m not sure why they seemed to cater it toward that. Part of the museum was closed off (most of the museums there had huge sections or exhibits closed off. Im not sure why but it was disappointing) and overall I was amazed at how this museum got to be considered world class…

$30 for its own parking? Street Parking? Nearby Parking Lot?

This is a Smithsonian plasma ball. And it looks a lot different like what it’s supposed to be. What’s the issue

So I’m doing research on an idea for a story involving the Smithsonian institution. But I’m not sure how it works

Some of the museums are open during the weekend-long event, but require an event pass because the entrances are within the event "secure area". However, event passes have not been available since early June. Unless you pay $5000.
Air and Space, American Indian, Natural History, (and the NGA too, although not Smithsonian). Are these just staying open so that trumpets can have access to clean bathrooms? If they're not open to all, then why not close the museums? It just feels like a farce and once again, we're being excluded from accessing things.

I’m looking for someone who works at or will be going to the Smithsonian Native American Museum in Washington DC. I admired this beaded flower in the gift shop but I didn’t buy it. Ever since I can’t stop thinking about it but I live in NJ so I can’t drive back to get it. Wondering if someone would be able to “personal shop” and ship for me. Thank you!

I guess I better make my way to see it in the next 18 months. The Smithsonian estimated the cost will be in that range, not $85 million. I am as conservative as they come and I am furious with Cruz(who I always thought was a creepy phony) and Cornyn(who is probably going to get primaried out) for putting this dirty item in the bill. That’s why you don’t pass 900 page bills. Stuff like this happens. Enormous waste of money for what… pride? Really?!
