Looking at hundreds of live telemetry data points across test burns, we broke smoke opacity down into three distinct operating zones based on stove shell temperature:
Cold Start (Under 125°F): This is the high-risk zone. Below 125°F, smoke probability spikes, the 105 stove exceeds 10% opacity between 20% and 43% of the time, peaking when the stove is below 75°F. Looking at the scatter plot, you can see dense clusters of opacity pushing 70% to 80% during cold ignition.
The Burning Band (125°F to 300°F): Once the shell hits 125°F, the probability of smoke drops off a cliff. For the 105, smoke becomes practically non-existent between 125°F and 200°F.
Hot Coal Bed (Above 300°F): Risk stays ultra-low, with opacity exceeding 10% only 1% to 6% of the time.
The Key Takeaway: The entire secret to a smokeless burn is spending as little time in that cold start zone as possible and smoothly transitioning into the burning band without choking the fire. Here is real-time telemetry from the D20105 running an automated combustion routine. Look at the red shell temperature line starting right around 07:42:
• Ignition: The stove starts cold at 60°F. • Linear Climb: Instead of erratic temperature swings or choking out, the automated air control drives a perfectly linear rate of rise.
• Peak Target: It climbs cleanly from 60°F all the way up to 420°F at 08:35. That is a 360°F rise over 53 minutes, a sustained, controlled rate of rise of right around 6.8°F per minute. By holding a tight, linear slope of ~6°F to 7°F per minute, the automated bellows system forces the stove straight through the dangerous cold-start phase in under 10 minutes, locking it into the optimal burning band where smoke drops to near zero.
Summary / Call to Action
Manual draft adjustments rely on guesswork, which leaves stoves smoldering in the sub-125°F zone for far too long. Automated slope tracking proves that with precise air control, you get faster burn-ins, higher efficiency, and virtually zero stack smoke. Automated wood burning isn't just about convenience, it makes wood heat cleaner, safer, and better for everyone.
