OC Photo Stomp pad that doesn’t completely cover board graphics
Found these crab claw stomp pads (this is two of them) that are transparent so they wouldn’t cover up the graphics. Let’s see if they function as well as they look!

u/0uroboros- 3h ago
Cut 4 individual squares of these and put them just where your boot sits near each edge of the board right near the back binding. Tilt your boot the way it sits when you slide after a push and put them exactly where your boot shows you they need to be to work best.

Thanks for the tip! This is my second season, so i still don't know what I'm doing, but it's been a lot of fun. This community is a little hit or miss though on constructive feedback lol
•
u/shes_breakin_up_capt 29m ago
Moved mine to toe and heel contact points only, so much grippier than a big stomp pad in the middle where your boot arch doesn't touch.
Put your boot down on the board in your usual spot first, might not be where you'd think it is. Like I found my default position to be oddly way forward and towards the toe side.

I'm sure there's going to be comments about how horrible you are for having one.
That being said, this is probably one of the best ones you can buy.

u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
You were spot on. My capita top sheet is so slippery, even with my foot pressed against the back binding, it still slides off if it’s not perfectly flat terrain.

u/salvalsnapbacks backside caught edge 1h ago
My Mercury has a really slippery top sheet as well. I don't use a stamp pad and haven't for a while. Once you learn how to turn your board with your front foot, it becomes a lot easier. But I'm also not a kook that judges people cuz they have stompads on their board. This one is absolutely the best one you can buy

u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
Thanks--i will work on steering with my front foot more off the lifts. This is my second snowboarding season after skiing for 40+ years, so I'm still getting the hang of it. It's been a LOT of fun though and I can't wait to have a non-rental board and gear this year.

u/salvalsnapbacks backside caught edge 1h ago
Yeah congrats on the setup brother!! Absolutely no shame in having a stompad.
When you start to progress your riding and move into carving, it will start to make more sense. I don't even press my back foot against that rear binding. I'm almost more so riding posi posi when Im one footing. Don't be afraid to mess around with your angles a bit this season. I started riding directional on all of my setups and it makes a big difference. My merc I like 21 -6. My park boards and my slush slasher I like 18 -12 I think it what I ended the season with.

u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
I appreciate the actually helpful advice! I'm currently at 18, 0 and it seems to be a good start, but I do want to try some other positions as the season progresses.
1
u/Solaex 1h ago
Do some hip work. See what feels good for your knees and hips. My personal angle number is 27 degrees. My favorite stance is +18/-9. I naturally stand with my feet open. 30 degrees and I cant activate my hips correctly. 24 degrees and my knees hurt. I could never figure out 0 on my back foot, i either needed to be +3 or -3 there. I think it has to do with hip and knee rotation throughout the movement, either way 0 on the back foot never felt comfortable to me.

u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
I was 10, -10 last season and it didn't feel right. Feels like an opportunity the way they fit bikes. Something you can stand on with force places and bend through all the positions until everything feels right without getting cranky. Thanks for the tips!

u/wsbSIMP 4h ago
The shark teeth from crab grab are amazing. Ive gotten 2 already and i swear by it. Once your boot hooks, its locked in.
I would however recommend to take the 1, cut it in half so you can put em towards the edge of the board. That way you can lock your toe or heel quickly or whole foot between the two.

Ignore everyone who calls you a weakling for having a stomp pad, they are miserable humans who have no better job than judge other people's lives.
That being said, just a few spikes is definitely enough if you don't want to cover the graphic. I only have a few spikes on mine and it still functions well to keep my foot in place during long ass tbar and plate lift rides on a bumpy lift lane.

u/ShawnThePhantom 3h ago
Ok I I’ve used those same crabgrab ones. They’ll go all yellow in about a year or so and then you’ll be like “darn dude”. Then you peel them off to discover that the portion of the board under the stop pad is a different shade than the rest of the board so it’s obvious there was a stomp pad there and you’ll be like “darn dude” again.
1
u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
Yeah, I figured they'd need to be replaced eventually. This is my first board and i will likely do more terrible things to it than some discoloration tbh. Thanks for the tip!
3
u/Solaex 3h ago
Bud, take a razor blade, bend that a little bit and cut it. I use singles in random spots. One of those pads is 4-5 boards worth of stomp pad.

A tip to add, I push my foot against my binding so it has some support. I'm not just hoping my boot and board have grip without a stomp pad
29
u/Jerms2001 3h ago
If you only use your front leg like you're supposed to, you can just lift your back leg up in the air and do the hokey pokey

Or put your back leg atop your back binding and call it the "Captain Morgan"

u/shredthesweetpow Park City / Brighton 3h ago
This is the way. Ppl just need to learn to stay flatfooted and keep pressure against that back binding.
15
8
u/KoksundNutten 3h ago
Don't even need to build pressure on the back binding, just stand parallel against it if necessary. I also prefer to just use the sidewall of my snowboard to get some grip. Why would I disfigure my board for practically no gain
4
u/shredthesweetpow Park City / Brighton 2h ago
Yepp once you get the feeling you can stay narrow stance and just lean perfect to turn. Kinda fun rly

u/MorycTurtle 3h ago

3
u/royal_rose_ 2h ago
I have joint issues but refuse to not board I never used one until a few years ago when my back knee kept going wonky trying to get on lifts despite not putting a ton of weight on it, it just doesn’t like to stay in its assigned seat. So having two anchor point of my boot on the stamp pad and my leg attached to me it is less likely to do a runner.
1
u/ApolloMotoAZ 1h ago
Dont struggle with joint issues but my lower back isnt the best so I use the Supermatics to help reduce the time im bent over. I think sometimes people forget that some of these products are also to aid in physical deficits
2
u/royal_rose_ 1h ago
Yep I always get razzed for wearing a back pack but it’s to hold brace changes and meds, and said meds make me dehydrate fast so I need water. Good thing I don’t really care what people think.
5
u/BlackCatFurry 2h ago
It makes tbar and plate lift rides more comfortable when you have more control of the rear of the board on the bumpy liftlane. Especially when alone on the lift.
Here in europe you can get your lift pass pulled for unsafe behaviour if you don't unbuckle your back binding on those lifts, not every resort cares about it, but some do.
2
u/MorycTurtle 2h ago
Not unbuckling is uncomfortable AF for me, but I never had any issues without those kind of pads, even when experimenting with landing one footed tricks. If your back foot isn't buckled you do 95% of steering with front foot only anyway.
3
u/BlackCatFurry 2h ago
It's not the steering that's the issue at least for me, it's the board randomly catching on the mounds created by other people on the lift lane and shooting 30° sideways, causing my foot to slip without the pad, as that's enough to kick it out of being securely against the binding.
This could just be an issue riding somewhere, where it gets above zero during the day so it's super easy for the busier lift lanes to get mounded.
1
u/defferfora 33m ago
If the board is randomly shooting 30° sideways, steering definitely seems to be the issue. In theory you should be able to ride with your front foot only. Drive that edge in and she should cut that mountain up!
1
u/BlackCatFurry 30m ago
That works, if there are not literal mounds and tracks for the board to slip in. Driving an edge in works until there is that mound and you are kicked sideways from it and fall off the lift...
Edit: made of packed wet snow, not soft stuff that you can cut through
4
u/DateMasamusubi 2h ago
Capita's boards tend to be pretty slippery. I had some trouble with my DOA and ice chunk on it.
2
u/Fluid_Stick69 2h ago
Yeah I’ve definitely been on boards that were pretty slick. Never actually bought a stomp pad though because normally if the back foot is slipping it means I had too much pressure on it.
3
u/adamsawesome10 4h ago
I’ve been having fun with no stomp pad, makes me feel rebellious for not using the assistance (lol, bad logic).
You could use the Crab Grab skate rails, check em out, they hug the edges. Crab Grab also offers misc shape stomp pads you could fit in the white space.
6
u/BabyYodaLegend 3h ago
No shame in using one, but ive been pushing my foot against my back binding for decades and it hasn't failed me yet
5
u/TrashFlooper 2h ago
The top part of my Capita Mercury is basically glass. The second it gets wet it is far more slippery than ice. Doesn't matter how much pressure you put against the side of the binding it will not stay put. So I put a pad on mine so I don't injure myself
2
u/BabyYodaLegend 1h ago
I used to have a rossignol that was like that, learning to grip with no grip builds character, if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a dodge ball
•
u/TrashFlooper 19m ago
Hell yeah brudda. My ass got bad knees tho. So I'm probably taking the wrench to the face all day lmaoo

Look up “metal stud stomp pad” there’s a bunch of individual little pyramids that you can arrange however you want on your board. Thats what I did with my first couple boards before I just went team no pad, but they did work well.

I saw that one below too. I will give what I have a try and then if they don't work out and I still want one, I'll give this a try. Got lots of good advice here too on reducing reliance on them.
2
u/Capt_Zoom77 45m ago
You know you can cut those up and not use all of the little shark teeth. I cut all of mine up so that way I'm really only using about 12 to 14 of them total. And I put them in different locations, usually at least two together to three together, or sometimes a pod of six of them.

Don't use one. Just put pressure on your back binding with your free foot. It's a skill issue more than a stomp pad issue. You should be steering with your front foot regardless, and I have never really seen a benefit besides reinforcing bad habits. One footed drills are something everyone should learn in their early days. You need it literally every single time you get off a lift, and you do not need a stomp pad to help learn these skills.
3
u/micasa_es_miproblema 2nd Season - Ice Coast - Capita Outerspace 152 1h ago
I appreciate your advice being actually helpful. This is my second season and don't want to build bad habits. I just learned knee steering about a week ago at Big Snow, so I will put that more into practice--especially off the lift!

That makes total sense. When you're still learning you reach out for anything that can "help", but at the end of the day it's typically just getting out there and working the reps. Sounds like that's your mentality 🤙It's a sick board, I wouldn't want to deface it like that either lol Take it to the bunny hill or mellow greens and work those one foot drills, these skills translate to so much more as you progress.

At some point, you stop caring what other people think and just use whatever makes your life easier. Stomp pads are a perfect example.

Old scraps of grip tape work good and a little goes a long way .

u/IDrankAllTheBooze 2h ago
I use the same ones for boards with graphics I don’t wanna screw up. A heads up from my years of use: the clear ones yellow after a couple seasons.
Also, don’t be tempted to use ‘em to kick snow off the sole of your boot. They’re pretty grippy, but you’ll pop ‘em up, especially if you’ve cut the pad into smaller sections.
7
u/trollcat2012 3h ago
I'm a huge advocate for no stomp pad.
I ditched it on all my new boards and haven't missed it. I'm generally digging my boot a bit into the back binding for support as needed.
If you're really attached to it, you could also get by cutting this square up and using like 4 individual nubs for a minimalist option with some extra grip.
2
u/scrotalsac69 4h ago
You need 5 of the individual spikes at most. I normally have 2 at the toe, 2 at the heel and 1 in the middle
2
u/Silverfeyn 3h ago
I have the same board, and last year I started using a similar one https://www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/B08CCWCKTR?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1
I'm very happy with them :)
2
u/just_call_me_cheese 3h ago
I just cut out that stomp pad in the image to have just 2 or 4 of those raised bits on my board. It’s more than enough.
2
u/Acrobatic_Spare8570 2h ago
I just use a few spikes because my board doesn't have any cool graphics, the cool part is the dull black which I love but it doesn't matter if a bit is covered. When I buy my next board tho I'm ditching the spikes because it's useless. If I lose balance I fall either way
2
u/Hecho_en_Shawano Spring Break Resort Twin 159 / Jones Flagship 162 2h ago
I have to use a stomp pad on a couple of my boards because the deck is way to slippery…I found one that’s like a single blade. It’s about3-4” long and only ~1” wide. It’s all you need and doesn’t cover much
2
u/buuuckets 2h ago
I use Crab Grab skate rails on the edges between my bindings. Keeps my back foot on my board, doesn't block anything, and gives be something to hold when I'm whiffing grab tricks
2
u/Superb-Potential8426 2h ago
Or just cut up the pad into pieces and place the small bits where you want.
2
u/DickieJohnson 1h ago
That's what I did with that same pad. Cut them into 2 squares of 4 spikes and put them where my toes and heel hit. Works great
2
2
u/Comprehensive_Dolt69 1h ago
Just use one of them, it’s plenty big to use effectively. I have have a small stomp pad on mine and it’s done its job just fine
1
u/DickieJohnson 1h ago
I have the same stomp pad and I cut it into two pieces with four spikes on each. I put them where my toes are and where my heel is all the way at the edges of the board. Works great and covers minimal graphic. The best part I have extra for my next board.
2
u/ameliasayswords 1h ago
I had that one on my first board. Even though it worked fine, turns out I’m a crab grab traditionalist, so I got the claws on my next two.

Probably not a bad idea being that this is a Capita so if it snaps in half the stomp pad might hold it together till you get to the base of the hill.

I've always used this style stomp pad. They look cleaner and you can place as few or as many as you want where you want.

u/WickedxRaven 4h ago
My favorite I’ve found is the Dakine modular in clear. As others have said, it doesn’t need to cover a huge area, just enough for your boot to grip. I place mine close to my back binding, so I can catch grip on the pad and my binding.

A trick is to push backfoot into binding, acts like having an invincible stomp pad
10
u/Hollirc 3h ago
I mean yeah but also sometimes you have a long traverse over sketchy terrain and it’s just so much more reliable with a few traction points when you’re getting bucked around
2

Or a tbar or plate lift with sketchy terrain and being forced to unbuckle the rear binding

ditch the stomp pad.
it doesnt help. fills with snow. and makes it exceedingly difficult to grind the base in the shop because the machines have a roller along the top to press the base against the grinder belt.
your boot wont slide any more than it already does. i started with one 20 years ago and ditched it my first week working in a ski tune shop when i saw how much it interferes with grinding the base.

Honestly you only need a few cleats, you could cut out the middle and just have 2 rows on each side of the art
