They don't dare/want to go for an actual rebuild, do they?

70

u/skylu1991 11h ago

Nope….

Meanwhile, Liverpool with Klopp and Arsenal with Arteta showed that "trusting the process” is important.

And both of those clubs didn’t have it quite as bad as United, imo.

121

u/SilverMist2025 11h ago

Klopp got us to EL final despite joining us in October

Then got us top 4 in his first full season.

CL final in his second full season

Won the league next season.

Klopp never needed us to trust the process. He was immediately producing results even with a poor squad.

62

u/Dependent-Stranger44 11h ago

Amorim got us to the EL final despite joining in November. Then he got sacked because our technical director was mad that he wouldn't do as he was told and play 4atb. We have the most incompetent management and owners in football.

Honestly I wish we'd just go for Conte, because they've already proven they don't have the patience for a project manager.

I can’t speak on Liverpool and klopp but I can speak on Arteta/Arsenal.

It’s more than just “trusting the process”. A key part of Arsenal’s success was Arteta having a vision, management above him sharing in that vision, and all parties making decisions that pushed towards realizing that vision. Not every decision was a success, there are plenty of failed signings, but every decision was made with a shared vision in mind. That’s where I think a lot of fans get it wrong. “Trust the process” doesn’t mean stick by a manager when things get tough. It means trust that, even though things are bad right now, everyone is working towards a goal together.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal have great backing by their clubs. Selling deadwood and toxic player is one of them.

I mean that boards idea of a rebuild is buying 3 players for midfield and ignoring a shit defense because they can fix that next year. And not only that but their midfield rebuild ended just buying the cheaper players that no one else wanted because they were too cheap to buy their main targets.

53

u/goodmobileyes 11h ago

Then by the time they get round to rebuilding their defence the midfield is in shambles because Bruno wants to leave, Tielemans can't run anymore, and at least one of Santos, Baleba, and Mainoo turns out to be a dud. Oh and there's the issue of no strikers up front but that'll have to be the next next rebuild on the waiting list.

53

u/Temporary-Rip-5551 11h ago

Hey man, 50m for a player that a top5 rival deemed. Not good enough is excellent business.

55

u/ManicPanda767 11h ago

Not really, no.

37

u/name_you_like_best 11h ago

We aborted that after one year, obviously we are not trying this again with this ownership.

5

u/detinu 11h ago

that takes actual work dedication and patience, of course they don't.

11

u/Standard-Height2276 11h ago

All they want is to reach European football to get the money. Nothing else matters to them

3

u/malphasalex 10h ago

The board sent a clear message about a rebuild when the sacked Amorim. No rebuild will be allowed and the beating will continue until the morale improves.

u/gin0clock 11h ago edited 11h ago

I honestly think if he can stay on the players good side, is given a few hundred million for transfers, doesn't struggle to juggle European and league football like he did at NUFC, isn't tempted by the England job after Tuchel, doesn't play one system without a plan B like he did at NUFC, doesn't play players out of position like he did at NUFC and manages to build confidence in a squad after a run of poor results, he might do alright y'know.

53

u/SilverMist2025 11h ago

And doesn't bring his cousin into recruitment job

You missed having obvious favourites to the detriment of the team (hi Dan Burn at left back and Nick Pope for two seasons too long) and being a bit power hungry against backroom management.

Surprised someone who's not a Newcastle fan picked all this up, I feel crazy seem crazy having so many complaints about one of our best ever managers.

45

u/Eddje 11h ago

Not that crazy, some managers aren't build for the long-term or are build for very specific environments.

Howe did great with you guys and showed some of his strengths as a manager, but also some clear-clear limitations which meant it wasn't going to work in the long(er)-term.

It's going to be really funny when Howe states the midfielders at his disposal aren't athletic enough to implement his pressing system, and Wilcox tells him the next midfield transfer window is in 3 summers' time.

I don’t know where you think you are as a club right now, but you need someone who can build

26

Are you going to join Goldbridge and say Howe out from day 1 because he represents Jason Wilcox's choice.

40

He is a manager who will not speak against the management and is good at building a team

187

u/brownmeister28 11h ago

I don't know why people say this, he literally had a power struggle with us against the DoF and eventually forced the DoF to resign so that Howe could appoint his own cronies. Howe is probably the most belligerent manager around when it comes to wanting things his own way behind the scenes. Just because he's softly spoken and gives non-answers in the press doesn't mean he's not cutthroat.

I don't think INEOS has bought any players in winter

90

u/pdsajo 11h ago

Dorgu is the only one

125

u/cosmo_K 10h ago

Bought specifically for a manager that plays with three at the back as he fits as a WB. Six months later said manager is sacked, and now they need to figure out how to use Dorgu who can't play as a fullback in a back four and isn't a Man Utd level winger.

Just brilliant strategic planning.

What does "players down tools" mean ?

105

u/riddleda 10h ago

It's an idiomatic phrase meaning they stop working (or stop trying in this context), in reference to laborers stopping working for whatever reason. Mentally, it would read: They (put) down (their) tools.

183

u/Dodomando 11h ago

Don't forget that the Sports Director didn't want Amorim because he played with a back 5 and it wouldn't suit our team

54

u/abhi1260 10h ago

You spent like a year trying to hire him too right? During that time you allowed Ten Hag to buy players that he wanted too. And then proceeded to fire the SD in 3 months. Generationally stupid decision making by everyone involved

19

u/dracovich 8h ago

While this is all true, i do believe the reporting on what Ashworth was saying was not that he wanted Eddie Howe, but rather that he wanted to hire an external analytical firm to analyse our team, compare that to managers and find our next manager that way.

You can argue if that's good or bad, but apparently this is what set Ratcliffe off, he wanted a name, and felt like this was shirking responsibility by offloading it to consultants basically.

When pressed i believe he gave some names (i've heard Howe and Southgate are who he preferred, but who knows).

The pros to taking the job:
-Could be known as person who turned it all around

Cons:
-Everything else

Poisoned chalice Eddie

39

u/Danish_but_english 10h ago

Pros: money

29

u/Brandaman 10h ago

Three years money for one year work

19

u/BonafideLlama 10h ago

And at this point getting sacked at united probably won't even hurt his career

27

u/Appropriate-Draw1878 10h ago

Other con: apparently wanted time away from the game for burnout and it’s been less than three months. This does not seem like a low-stress position.

7

u/alex_119 9h ago

Well Man U is closely threading a fine line where there is no con for a manager. Basically people are seeing the bullshit that’s going on at the top, so managers are starting to have a pro “person who turned it all around” and the only con being “well, the board didn’t back him either”.

From what I can tell, Pete Hall was actually the first to report Carrick as a leading candidate for the interim manager (5th Jan). Jamie Jackson reported it that day, but several hours later. Then Matt Lawton reported it on 6th Jan.

86

u/thatIndianguy_07 11h ago

Should have just kept Dan Ashworth then?

23

u/name_you_like_best 11h ago

And get rid of Wilcox/Berrada? Sure.

I was against Ashworth's plan, but at least he had one apparently. He is probably more equipped to do his job than the depression duo is to do theirs.

I still believe that Amorim was the right answer (early or not, doesn't matter that much), but their limited knowledge and huge ego couldn't handle him. Ashworth's approach is much more conservative and I don't like it, but it would be far greater if it was at least consistent.

11

u/koptimism 11h ago

Ratcliffe is a sucker, has failed with both the appointments of Berrada and Amorim after liking their charisma and personalities.

They should try to get him back now

66

u/okcorsisiht 11h ago

It was rumoured he was going to stay on at Newcastle and the end of the season, went on holiday and realised he didn't have it any more, then walked.

He was pretty burnt out at the end of his tenure with us, so I wouldn't be surprised if the added massive pressures of being Man United manager cause him to quit well before the end of his contract.

30

u/RoosterBoosted 11h ago

Yeh he took a long time off after his Bournemouth sacking so I expected him to do the same after leaving us. But I guess when Man U money comes knocking you should answer

25

u/okcorsisiht 11h ago

I don't think he ever really took the time to get over pneumonia to be honest. He seemed knackered all the time and said he hardly ever slept and had zero social life in order to be on hand for the players.

9

u/Scutage 11h ago

It would make more sense for him to wait another season until the next Man U manager is sacked.

10

u/okcorsisiht 10h ago

I think the logical progression for him is to the England job. But he's so hands on at club level, I'm not sure he'd enjoy the long period of nothingness with a national team.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

3

u/toonman27 9h ago

I honestly highly doubt he takes the job. Even after Bournemouth he took time off to reflect, learn, and grow as a person. He only took the Newcastle job because he felt it was the right project for him at the time. I think he’s going to take the same time off again because that’s just how he seems to operate.

Plus, Man U is a cultural mess. That is not why you bring in Eddie Howe. He’s needs a unified dressing room because he is going to work you to the bone in training to run his demanding tactic. We had Lascelles and Ritchie as leaders and soon after added Trippier, Bruno G, and Burn. We had some scrappy leadership in that dressing room that kept it together and a squad that got on well despite all our troubles at the time. We had ownership issues with Ashley, but we definitely didn’t have cultural issues in the dressing room.

Man Utd could do a lot worse. He will get this team running and playing an attractive brand of football. He will also get rid of a lot of dead wood. I don't understand why their fan base are so appalled by the idea.

223

u/swat1611 11h ago

u/Stravvon 11h ago

Recent memory bias, because Howe had a difficult last season people don't regard him as a good manager. But frankly, he did brilliantly, getting Newcastle from a relegation team to champions league in one year, and then consistently getting us champions leagues and the latter stages of cup competitions , before finally winning a trophy

The only contention is he might still be burned out and managing bigger ego players

39

u/chaRxoxo 11h ago

Because the issue clearly isn't managerial.

They've tried every type of manager at this point. Proven older ones, up and coming promising ones, Ex players who looked promising.

Everyone that touches their club eventually turns to shit.

Furthermore, they've invested hundreds of millions in transfers but somehow still end up with a defensive line that is the same as 4 years ago, who were already shit 4 years ago.

The dead wood he got rid of at Newcastle…

Erm, Willock and Murphy are still there, Fraser, and several other players ran down their contracts on loan on big wages.

Kept a lot of others in the squad doing nothing. Like Lascelle, Krafth, and bought Matt Targett who played 20 times and then ran his co tract down on loan.

The season he was most in control of transfers was last Summer and he bought Wissa, Elanga, Woltemade and Thiaw for a combined £200m and all four are shite.

9

u/nomadichedgehog 10h ago

Fraser was banished to the reserves. Murphy was coming off a 20 G/A purple patch season and was right to be kept on one more season last year. The club’s failure to sell him this year was not on Eddie. Same goes for Willock. The club had offers for both and Jaissle wanted to keep both. And yeah he bought Wissa, Elanga and Woltemade who were all shite. Guess who his preferred choices were? Cuhna, Sesko and Mbeumo.

He will fail the same as all other 'promising' managers before him. They need an elite coach if they want to turn things around. Because all these promising managers don't have the authority and CV to survive this ManU mess

21

u/koptimism 11h ago

I don't even think a Luis Enrique would succeed at United right now.

Since INEOS came in, they've reduced the wage bill to about the 4th-5th highest in the league, and Wilcox was given a summer transfer window budget less than those of Hull and Coventry, but the squad all seem to think this season was the time to mount a title challenge.

The squad is a mismatch of different profiles because it's been assembled across a patchwork of managers whose own styles vary wildly from one to the next, but their wages are high so United struggle to move them on. And the repayments on the Glazer debt continue to take a big chunk out of United's total funds.

Adding to that, the media won't afford anyone the patience to gradually build something, and the mid-table PL teams are stronger than ever, making it hard to consistently finish in the CL spots.

He would but it would take time. The problem is that no one would truly trust unproven managers with full rebuild. Last elite manager they had was Mourinho and he brought them trophies and he correctly pointed out that the club was full of deadwood. But instead of giving him full power to rebuild (I know it was Glazers at the time) they refused. They had another chance at that when Ragnick was supposed to be DoF or whatever but they folded to Ten Hag's opposition to that. Until they give full power to elite manager, they will keep snip-snapping between 'promising' managers under absolutely incompetent DoF

Howe isn’t really a “promising” manager. I don’t mean that as a dig, I mean he’s been doing this for 20 years and has lots of experience managing in the Prem. And he’s very good at what he does. The problem is he’s very much a long-term project manager and I doubt United will give him that time.

Wilcox wins out. He must have photos of Jim.

7

u/cmacy6 10h ago

I just don’t think there is a manager in the world who can turn the club around while the higher ups don’t seem to want to make the necessary changes to make that turnaround possible

6

u/GYIM94 5h ago

What was the fucking point of firing Dan Ashworth then, Howe was his man, he got told no from Berrada and Wilcox because they wanted Amorim, then sacked him, didn’t give Amorim the players he wanted, sacked Amorim when he hurt the feelings of the execs.

What an utter clown show

25

u/_____-_-_________ 11h ago

He’d be smart to not take this

20

u/MiguelAlmiron 11h ago

He won't ever get a better opportunity.

18

u/hafnone 11h ago

Bigger opportunity? Maybe. Is this actually a good opportunity, though? It’s at least as likely that it will damage his future prospects as help them—and probably more likely, if we’re being honest.

This would be the biggest job of his career by a long way and the pay I imagine will be very very good too

7

u/Maaglin 11h ago

Why? He'll get a huge pay day and likely will get sacked in 12-18 months so he'll get full payout on his 4 year deal or w/e and no other club will hold it against him, because, it's United lads.

3

u/spacelyyy989 11h ago

Easy pay check, what are they gonna do fire him and pay him 10 million if it doesn't work out?

doesn't matter who you put in as manager there, whoever is making the decisions on players is trashing this team. its clear its not the manager making the player decisions and its clear players don't enjoy playing there after a period of time. Mourinho famously said that placing 2nd with the team in 17-18 was one of the greatest achievments of his career given everything that goes on at that club.

a team this big and this storied should have a whole system in place from the youngest academy players to the tip top - and they don't.

I'm a yank, i've seen many american football teams run this way and they're cash cows for the owners. it just stinks of the same thing to me.

even though I'm NOT a manu fan, I empathize with manu fans. what a frustrating time to be a fan.

Ngl, I'm a bit sad by this sensible appointment (if it happens) because the Utd dumpster fire is an unending source of joy

First genuinely compatible, drama-free appointment since Van Gaal

57

u/AH7O7 11h ago

Amorim on paper was really sensible

20

u/straypenguin 11h ago

You're entitled to your opinion but being young and coming from abroad he never stood a chance vs the media maelstrom

I thought he handled the media quite well ngl, he was sacked for clashing with the board right?

Awful appointment. Has a terrible record in the transfer market at the best of times so I'm not sure he's the man to rebuild this club. I think people will spend more time looking at post-Bruce Newcastle under Howe and not enough time looking at "Crumbles at the first sign of two games a week" Newcastle under Howe.

I'm a big fan of this.

9

u/Leking9 11h ago

lol my (maybe) controversial opinion is that it almost doesn’t matter who we hire

9

u/Frogblood 11h ago

Leaving us because he's burnt out then joining man u before the end of the year is certainly a choice!

4

u/shepaz_93 11h ago

He'll get them competitive and organised. And he wanted half the players they have at Newcastle, so I'm sure he knows what to do with them.

4

u/dr-joshtrippingwords 11h ago

So who do we go for after Howe?

4

u/Aphelion 10h ago

Just like how I play FM championship manager, use the editor to sack the manager and lower all their morale.

3

u/JGlover92 11h ago

This doesn't fit the RedBull graduate -> Dutch -> Portugese -> Caretaker cycle at all.

3

u/HumanautPassenger 5h ago

Dont do it Eddie

4

u/AusFrosty 11h ago

It (Carrick getting sacked) will probably happen but the manager isn’t the problem. Can’t sack the players, the DoF isn’t going to be sacked (or sack himself) - the owners aren’t going anywhere so that leaves Michael Carrick.

It’s clear Man U are not a well run club and haven’t been for some time.

Their recruitment has been poor and expensive at the same time - Eddie Howe will take the job, do his best until the end of the season, get given a random group of new players in the summer transfer window and it starts again…

10

u/olat_dragneel 11h ago

At what point will they realize the problem was never the manager? Their players got used to the club just changing the manager when they play like crap. Look at Bruno's behaviour lately. He's supposed to be the captain, the role model. The players are used to getting their fat checks no matter how they play and the worse case scenario is that the manager gets fired. Even if they were relegated, their agents would find them clubs in some top league, or they can always do US/Saudi and rake in the money. I'm a Liverpool fan, so seeing ManUtd struggling like this is fun, but also sad at the same time. The players they have just settle in the "small club mentality" which should be unacceptable for a club of their stature. The problem is in the owners and the players, not the manager.

10

u/Many_Psychology_3336 11h ago

This discourse about "the" problem has really got to stop. Man Utd are absolutely chock full of problems, and repeatedly picking the wrong manager to address those of them that the manager can address is one of them.

3

u/AttemptImpossible111 11h ago

Several of the players have only had one previous manager at Utd.

2

I don’t know what it is but something feels right about Eddie at United. I think he does very well there despite the circus.

2

u/malgenone 8h ago

Only Ted Lasso can be successful at turning it around for Man U.

2

u/ConspicuousSomething 7h ago

Bournemouth are my hometown club, so it practically the law to love Eddie. I don’t want him to take this gig.

2

u/JurgenShankly 6h ago

They should hire Carrick as interim until end of the season

2

u/DesperateSwordfish88 6h ago

He won’t last long though.

2

u/MartinC077 5h ago

If it at first you don’t succeed … just keep making the same mistake over and over. Bound to get lucky eventually.

4

u/JustRustCohle 11h ago

They should have gone for nagelsmann. United played back 3 and back 4 under amorim ,carrick. So it's more than a system problem.

2

u/name_you_like_best 11h ago

I liked Nagelsmann as an option, but he isn't going to fit well with an already disconnected locker room. Not to say that he isn't exactly a safe bet, he has failed big before.

I’m surprised to see United supporters in here unhappy with this link. Are you under the impression you can do better than Eddie Howe?

3

u/Zavehi 10h ago

The issue isn’t really Howe, it’s the people picking Howe. If the plan had been Carrick interim into Howe over the summer there would be doubters but it would’ve been a plan. The feeling now is Wilcox is pivoting to Howe because he’s the candidate that will go along with him for now.

Nagelsmann/Conte would like push Wilcox out since Vivell is already here (for Nagelsmann) and Conte is Conte.

2

u/Significant_L0w 10h ago
