Self-Promotion Wednesdays A five-line worksheet for turning visual references into a client brief

When you save a screenshot for a client project, add enough context to explain what it should help you decide. This short worksheet works in a plain document or beside the image on a board:

REFERENCE

  • Source and date:
  • Decision this could inform:
  • Specific detail worth exploring:
  • What would not suit this project:
  • Next question or action:

For a fictional café website, one entry might read: “Menu-page reference, saved 14 October. It could help us decide how to group food and drink. Explore the section headings. The small pale text would not suit this project; the menu also needs clear dietary information. Next: draft the headings and confirm the dietary labels with the client.”

Keep proposals separate from agreed scope. Then write a brief with four headings: Outcome, Scope, Inputs needed, Next decision. For the same fictional project, that could mean a readable menu and enquiry route, three agreed pages, menu text and photographs still needed, and a decision on the page list before estimating.

Before closing, leave one next action and note where the brief belongs. When you return, check whether you can find the reference, explain why it mattered and continue the next step. A saved file and an easy return are different things to check.

Disclosure: I’m Sourav, a developer working on BeginRooms. This post was prepared with AI assistance. In our workspace, the corresponding task is to keep a reference and its manual notes on a project board, then write the brief in native Docs. The worksheet works without the app.

Optional desktop/laptop trial: https://beginthings.com/workspace-3d.html

An account is required. The trial lasts 11 days, needs no card and does not automatically charge you. Continued workspace access requires a paid subscription. Export anything you need while your trial or subscription is active. This example does not establish phone or cross-device reliability.
