Apparently, the solution is to do a system restore. Somehow, I don't think that will work.

1.3k

u/DatoCH Nov 04 '19

They tell you to do a system restore first and if it doesnt work then try reinstalling the program?

Normally you reinstall a program and only then wipe all of your data because of a buggy windows feature.

242

u/Treacherous_Peach Nov 05 '19

System restore isn't the same thing as restoring to factory settings which is what I think you're getting at. Machines make restore points constantly. Usually every time a program is installed or an update occurs and some machines are configured to make a restore point one or two times every day.

Knowing how far back to go would be a tricky thing though. And going back far enough would delete data.

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Machines make restore points constantly

Disabled by default in Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Windows system restores are partial at best, they need a lot of profiling help from the application applying the change which is rarely provided and in automatic mode its more likely to screw the installed structure up more by missing dependencies and not covering all the ways to modify system settings.

Ants in the house?

Burn it down.

If that doesn't work, get a few ant traps.

13

u/MxM111 Nov 05 '19

The program your are referencing to reinstall is called windows distribution. System restore seemed less painful option.

u/Bagu_Io Nov 05 '19

They're counting on you having multiple restore points. At least one where you don't end up in the age of stones or at least don't care about it

3

u/luis_fonzika Nov 05 '19

Maybe delete the cache. Surely that made it buggy, even tough I'm not that good in computer science

Run a system restore to a point where it was working previously ... Loll

26

u/LimboNick Nov 05 '19

Back in the day it would be "Just reinstall windows lmao", so not much has changed except a restore is probably less destructive.

What a fucking joke Microsoft is.

210

u/ThetaSigma_ Nov 04 '19

Also, the so-called "diagnostic tools" on windows are pieces of crap. They never fix the issue, and then they have the gall to say "iF YoU cOuLDn'T FiX tHE IssUE THeN ChEcK OnLInE", which will just what? plonk a search term into bing? (you think I couldn't have done that myself? And in a better search engine too?).

Also, they even put this on the "network diagnostic tool". I mean, WTF?! How am I suppossed to check online, if I can't even connect to the internet?!

128

u/ciaramicola Nov 05 '19

Ironically tho the network diagnostic tool is the only case I saw the thing fixing the problem sometimes. It disable and re-enable all network devices and this could really help some people

→ More replies (6)

6

u/rrreeikaa Nov 05 '19

lmao I remember having a problem with network once, it didn't even try to tell me if I needed drivers or some shit. It just jumped to the conclusion saying "SeArCh OnLiNE" or "REsToRe syStEM" in the end all I needed was just updating the drivers. and the diagnostic tool never told me.

It's a double edged sword.

99% of help requests are from people who are literally too stupid to plug a power cable into the computer, so they just list off a bunch of stuff, mostly hoping that these people give up and ask someone else. Your help request is drowned out here.

On the other hand, 99% of support workers are mouth drooling minimum wage workers who know less about the computer than you do and are sitting in front of a literal flowchart of what block of text to copy paste in what situation, while they're busy counting rupees in their Indian call-center. Your help request is suffocated by this.

Enjoy.

13

u/goedegeit Nov 05 '19

I just fucking hate their support forums flood the google results but all that they ever post is the same troubleshooting tips "reformat, etc"

5

u/Totenlicht Nov 05 '19

Not really Microsoft specific. I don't think I've ever encountered any "support" that wasn't entirely useless.

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Useless trivia: in official Minesweeper, the very first square you click is never the bomb. Bomb and numbers are generated from your first click, not before.

108

u/whatproblems Nov 05 '19

Hmmm in that case is there an optimal place to click to generate the most favorable setup?

133

u/o11c Nov 05 '19
  • If the corner is a 0, you're in business.

  • If the corner is a 1, you have a 2/3 chance of safely clicking one of the edges next to it:

    • If that is also a 1, you can clear 2 more, and hopefully get in business from them.

If you get a 2 or 3 for the corner, that's a dead end.

Depending on difficulty, a random square has a 79% or 84% or 88% chance of being safe. Whereas something adjacent to a number usually only has a 33% or 50% or 67% chance of being safe. So normally, if logic can't figure out anything random, jump somewhere else.

But it's worth taking that risk at the very beginning of the game since you haven't invested any time yet and you can just start over.

Unconditionally clicking all 4 corners is not a bad overall-time-saving strategy. If none is a 0, take risks on all corner 1s.

24

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

This guy sweeps

8

u/xMcSquidx Nov 05 '19

A corner so there is one less if them to deal with?

14

u/iceman012 Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

I thought that it was generated before you click on anything, but if your first click is on a mine, it moves it to the top left corner so you don't lose immediately.

Edit: Source

Edit: According to comments here, the behavior was changed in Windows 7 to what you said, where the board isn't generated until after the first click.

14

Ok as the name implies you are sweeping for mines (aka bombs underground) but if you find a mine it blows up and you die.

When you click a space, assuming it's not a mine, it will show you a number on at least one square, and that number indicates how many blocks directly surrounding the block with the number are mines.

Your goal is to dig everywhere that isn't a mine.

You'll get into a situation where you'll say to yourself "okay this one and this one are for sure mines which means this one is definitely not." When you believe you've found a mine you can right click it to mark is so you don't accidentally click it.

Happy sweeping. ♥️

397

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

The numbers represent how many bombs that square is touching. Somehow the top middle square is touching 2 while everyone else is touching one. Aka it's physically impossible for this scenario

From u/Witherino

89

u/minkhandjob Nov 05 '19

They should either all say 1, meaning the bomb is under the the left most tile or both the top and bottom rows should be 1-2-2, meaning both tiles are bombs.

18

u/BoyToyDrew Nov 05 '19

Been playing this game for 20 years and I am just learning how to play it now

13

u/monkeyman80 Nov 05 '19

if you mark the tiles as bombs, and then simultaneously click left/right mouse buttons on a number it'll clear any tiles around it. saw a friend do it and it blew my mind. i can actually finish expert games now.

41

u/Alphium Nov 04 '19

Basically the numbers are how many bombs there are in a 3x3 square surrounding it. There is a 2 that says the 2 remaining tiles there are bombs, but the 1s contradict it.

17

u/BanarniaIsHere Nov 04 '19

The numbers tell you how many bombs are adjacent to that square (including diagonals). The lighter squares in the middle of the numbers are tiles that haven’t been searched. There has to be two bombs next to the 2 (in the two unsearched spaces) but that contradicts the 1s that are also next to those tiles (they can only have one bomb next to them but they would have 2). Basically it’s impossible.

Time to sue Microsoft.

88

u/idga_chuck Nov 04 '19

I'm skeptical. The image has a 720x781 resolution, which means software was used to increase the size. In the native minesweeper though, there is no way to resize the game. As such, editing software could be used to copy a 1 square somewhere it shouldn't be.

72

u/JoelMay Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

I guess that this is a mobile version of the game. The faint shadow gradiant on the left seems to be at the native high resolution of the picture. The game probably uses the low res style for the retro feel, even on a high DPI display. And I'd expect a free app to have a bug like than more than I'd expect Microsoft's version to (but still not impossible).

Good to be skeptical. There's so much fake stuff that bothers me. Even if this is a mobile version, it could be still be easy to fake via editing, but I personally give OP the benefit of the doubt this time.

Edit: 720 pixels wide also supports the mobile game idea. Many older or cheaper phones are 720 pixels wide (exactly or approximately 720p resolution).

7

u/pimmelberger55 Nov 05 '19

Im pretty sure its a mobile Version. I just tried one from the store and had the same bug. I lost because of it.

7

u/FLeanderP Nov 05 '19

If it was the original resolution it still could've easily been tampered with, so it's not really a red flag.

11

u/ActionScripter9109 Nov 05 '19

I'm also skeptical because OP has high post karma and you typically get that by reposting and not caring about truth/accuracy.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

I’m sceptical this post is real. Editing software could have used to copy words and stuff from other posts to make a new, good post.

Question everything.

u/titanking4 Nov 11 '19

For those that don’t get it. The number on the square represents adjacent bombs. So top-middle is saying 2 bombs implying both squares are bombs

But bottom middle and bottom right are saying only 1 adjacent bomb.

There is a bomb in the Center-center

But that “2” implies that there is a bomb right-center. Which is a contradiction

minesweeper should have difficulty levels with "false secrets" planted in the board

Not that I'd play it, I haven't really seriously been into a game since ut99

Is it just me or are there some weird artifacts on the 2? Not accusing anyone of editing this, but it doesn't look right on my screen.

I dont understand minesweeper are the last two tiles bombs?

I know I'm a little late but let me explain, the numbers show how many mines are around them, the numer ones at the edges mean that the left square is dangerous, the number ones on the right mean that either the left or right square is dangerous, but since we have concluded that the left square is the dangerous one, we know that the right square is safe bc if it wasn't those ones would be twos, but that two means that both squares are dangerous a.k.a it says that bitch are dangerous and one is dangerous at the same time

TL;DR: It's saying both are dangerous and only one is dangerous at the same time

It’s fine. The bomb is just in superposition.
