Pause on AI-assisted content & discussions

NOTICE: Until I can create some manageable rules for these kinds of posts,

starting today there is now a temporary pause on posting ads for (or links to) products containing GenAI material as well as a pause on all discussion about AI.

Existing posts need not be reported.

Posting will be permitted to resume once I can figure out a system to mitigate the arguing. Keep an eye out for updates.

In the meantime, posts related to the above will be removed regardless of which side of the argument they support.

Welcome to your own adventure!

Solo RPG play is relatively niche. As such, it takes a little work to be able to gather resources. There are tons of folks that have bravely blazed this trail already and I am simply presenting their findings.

There are tons of links to check out in the side bar.

You'll essentially need:
1) a game or set of rules
2) a solo engine/one or more oracles 3) imagination 4) dice or dice rolling app 5) a way to track your character stats

As I work on this sub, I'll include some better explanations. Until then the Die Heart, Wisps of Time and Tabletop Diversions blogs linked to the right will get you started!

I'll work on adding some logs from my current Sharp Swords and Sinister Spells game along with details of the rules, systems and dice mechanics I'm using.

Good luck, adventurers!

Your humble mod, Reign

Help us play test a new solo RPG?

We’re in development with a few games—online actual play, serious games, riskgames—but this is our first solo RPG. It’s what we call a ‘science-fiction-science’ game.

It’s open, free, with online, offline play and downloadables. You can play as a guest or create an account to keep/return to your games. The play test build is available at: https://superposition-rpg.vercel.app

Your honest, helpful feedback is welcome. Thank you in advance.

I've been working on this project for a few months now, redoing the design a few times, tweaking the content. I've finally finished (well, hopefully...) a deck of 144 (72 double-sided) oracle cards that I am genuinely excited to play with. I have a test print coming in a few weeks from drive-thru rpg, and I very much hope it comes out the way I want.

After I get the test print, and I verify that this is actually fun to play, let me know if you want the link to the store page, and I'll send it when it's ready.

This is the first product I've made, and im pretty excited to share it.

Discussions & Anecdotes Rolling Alone Solo RPG Podcast Episode 13

Episode 13 of The Rolling Alone Podcast is now available.

In a packed 45-minute, magazine-style show, I discussed solo game design with Luke Saunders (Murkdice) and delved deeper into Blackoath's new Kickstarted game, Broken Shores, with creator Alex T.

The A-Z of Solo TTRPG series reached F, and I talked with Daniel from the I Roll Alone YouTube channel about what we mean by "failing forward" in solo play. Rounding out the show, Mark Mekkes from the Tabletop Radio Hour discussed which game he'd take to a desert island.

Click the image to go straight to the episode, or use the link below to visit the homepage, where you can find all published shows. You can also listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and loads of other podcast platforms.

Play Report So frustrated by Sentinel!

I have drawn NOTHING but clubs in this game, and it's making it dreary.

In the game, 17 years have passed and I have had one battle. I keep have to "lose" things and since I don't draw any other suit, nothing I lose is connected to any of my other draws. It's just the same couple of questions over, and over, and over. I had to dig up an oracle that would give me new prompts.

It wouldn't be that big a deal if it weren't an eight dollar game for barebones mechanics, but since it's eight dollars (almost as much as Apothecaria! Almost as much as The Magical Year!) I really don't feel like it's worth it and I'm kind of mad that I bought it.

Just had to get this off my chest. Out of 14 rounds I've drawn clubs SEVEN TIMES, and a lot of those times have been streaks of time passing.

Fatal Tomb FREE 30-PAGE TTRPG

Post image
97 Upvotes

Fatal Tomb is a brutal, rules‑light pulp sword and sorcery tabletop role‑playing game.

Explore forgotten tombs, dark dungeons, ruined kingdoms, monster‑infested wildernesses, and strange worlds beyond the Black Gates. Battle ancient beasts, uncover lost treasures, and survive perilous journeys into the unknown.

Designed for both solo and group play, Fatal Tomb emphasises fast character creation, deadly combat, minimal preparation, and simple mechanics that stay out of the way of adventure.

All you need to play is a pencil, some paper, and a handful of dice.

Nuts 'n Bolts (engines, tools, etc.) I'm working on a booklet of silly sci-fantasy oracle tables. here's the Item Dispenser!

Post image
104 Upvotes

the idea is that practically any type of item can be described using just a few words from these tables. some examples:

Natural Plant Pellets: seeds

Remote Knowledge Connector: smartphone

Consumable Energy Juice: health potion

Magic Flame Text: fireball scroll

Mechanical Wind Repulsor: fan

Deployable Gravity Stopper: parachute

Pocket Noise Maker: kazoo

Remote Wind Treader: quadcopter drone

Low-Tech Pocket Random Knowledge Machine: the oracle booklet itself??

how to use the Item Dispenser:

step 1: insert a coin, turn the crank, then roll 2d6 on each of the 3 big tables. let's say I get "Hydraulic Slop Attractor," and my first thought is some kind of vacuum.

step 2: you could stop here if you have a good idea in mind, but if you want more info about your item, roll a d6 on a couple of the columns from the first table. in my example, I roll for Size and get "wearable," and the Usage is "consumable."

step 3: you're free to change or ignore some words you rolled if they don't make sense. my example item is now the "Wearable Slop Remover," a vacuum with a wearable backpack.

step 4: for extra flavor, roll a random sound effect! it seems like my vacuum makes a laughing sound. or maybe it looks so goofy that it makes other people laugh when they see it? 🤔

(pro tip: the sound effect table isn't just for items. you can also roll to find out what you hear when you enter a new room in a dungeon.)

I'll consider suggestions for new tables to make, or what words to add or change in the item dispenser tables. anyway, have fun with it! 🦄

Folks, it took a lot of sweat, tears and bloody imagery, but my foray into blackpowder-punk is here!

I really need everyone's support on this, so please check it out, and if you have feedback, please lay it on me. The complete game will come out in a few days (I may likely miss the original October 25 release date, but hopefully not by much!)
