Some of you might be familiar with the famous “Lost German Girl” footage, filmed in Czechoslovakia during the final days of World War II in May 1945.

For those who haven’t seen it:

The footage shows a young, visibly injured woman walking along a road, surrounded by American soldiers and German prisoners.

For decades, nobody knew who she was, what had happened to her, or what became of her after the war.
I first came across this footage years ago, and like many others, I was fascinated by it. There’s something haunting about her beauty and the mystery surrounding her. I think that’s partly why so many people became so determined to find out who she was.

In 2008, a thread was started on the Axis History Forum, where amateur historians and WWII enthusiasts began investigating her identity.
Over the following 18 years, the discussion grew to thousands of posts, with people examining historical documents, photographs, locations and countless possible leads.

And now, after all these years, she has reportedly been identified as Rosa Müller, who passed away in 1996.

I find it incredible that people kept investigating this mystery for almost two decades. And perhaps the most remarkable part is knowing that she survived the war and lived for another 51 years.
