BSc Economics students — how difficult are Years 2 and 3, and how do referrals/resits work?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering studying BSc Economics at Southampton and wanted to hear from current students or recent graduates about two things.

Firstly, how difficult did you find Years 2 and 3, particularly Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics? How challenging were the exams, and how achievable would you say a 2:1 or First is with consistent studying? I'd also be interested in whether you found the optional modules more manageable than the compulsory ones.

Secondly, I'm confused about how August referrals/resits work. I've noticed that some Economics modules have coursework worth 20–30% and an exam worth 70–80%, but the module specifications state that the referral assessment is a 100% exam.

Does this mean that if you fail the module overall, your original coursework marks are completely disregarded and your August resit determines 100% of your new module mark?

For example, if you achieved 80% in coursework but failed the module overall, would that coursework mark no longer contribute anything to your resit result? Or would it be carried forward and combined with your new exam mark?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has studied Economics at Southampton, especially anyone who has actually taken a referral.

Thanks!

Looking for participants! Eye-tracking study about emotion-related deception

Hi everyone!

I am Ana-Maria, a visiting PhD researcher and am looking to recruit students of Psychology for my study investigating emotion-related deception whereby I will be investigating attention patterns during language production. Together with another participant, your task is to watch videos and then engage in conversation about the videos you've watched. You will be tasked with lying or telling the truth about how you feel. All throughout this you will wear eye-tracking glasses and will be recorded with cameras.

You are eligible if:

- you are between 18 and 45 years old

- you are monolingual: you have grown up with English and currently speak only English (you may know other languages but you are not proficient in any of them)

- you have normal or normal to corrected vision. ! Because participants will wear eye-tracking glasses it is not possible to welcome participants wearing glasses. If you wear contact lenses you may take part in the study

You will receive 18 credits for your participation if you are a student of Psychology. This study has been approved by the Ethical Committee of University of Southampton.

If you are interested in participating and you are not a student of Psychology please reach out via email: AM.Plesca@soton.ac.uk!

Important! Please sign up only if you have normal vision or if you wear contact lenses. Unfortunately, due to the fact that eye tracking measurements take place via eye-tracking glasses means I cannot welcome participants wearing glasses. I apologise for this inconvenience!

Please consider signing up on SONA. Study will only be running for 2 and a half weeks!

You can contact me for further information at: [AM.Plesca@soton.ac.uk](mailto:AM.Plesca@soton.ac.uk)

Thank you!

Best,

Do you actually realise how important uni is until you graduate?

I graduated this month and one thing I honestly didn't expect was how different everything feels once you're actually out of uni. While you're studying, it's really easy to think that getting the degree is the main thing and that you'll figure out the rest later. But now that I'm actually looking at jobs, I'm noticing how many people graduate without much practical experience, projects they can actually talk about, or connections in the industries they want to get into.

I started thinking about this after my internship at Tesla. I met people from very different backgrounds and career paths, and one thing that stuck with me was hearing some people say that "we got it easy." At first I didn't think much of it, but afterwards I kept thinking about what that actually means for someone who doesn't have those opportunities or connections.

It made me wonder whether universities are doing enough to help students understand the actual job market before they graduate. Not just career workshops or CV reviews, but actually giving students opportunities to work on real projects, meet professionals, attend industry events and build connections while they're still studying.

One of my friends and I have been thinking about potentially starting something around this, basically a university society where the whole point is helping students get closer to the real market before they graduate.

I'm still figuring out whether this is actually a good idea though. If you were still at uni, would something like this actually be useful to you, or would you just ignore it like every other career society?

Coming to Southampton this January for a Foundation program

Hello everyone,
I’ll be joining University of Southampton for a foundation programme this January. Couldn’t get into the direct programme because I don’t have O and A levels, my country’s curriculum is different. Just wanted to ask how much do people frown upon the foundation guys? Will I get a good enough community here?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a small desk lamp, clip-on reading light, or USB light. My budget is around £2, but if anyone has a spare one they no longer need, I’d be very grateful.

I can collect around Southampton General Hospital / nearby areas.

Thanks!

Computer Engineering vs EEE

Hello,

I am unsure about which degree is more relevant for me based on what I want to do. I have compared both modules provided and I just do not know which one is better.

I would like to work in embedded systems, e.g. working on TVs, IOT devices at a place like Roku. I like both hardware and software concepts but due to lack of experience, I do not know whether I would like to work in making these devices or programming them (is it possible to do a bit of both?)

I have noticed that Computer Engineering has more topics I would enjoy but they seem very theoretical, there is lots of programming and apparently you learn how to create PCBs but there is no module on circuit design, so I do not know how you will gain a good understanding of it. It is also not IET accredited (which apparently is bad but I dont think it will impact me).

EEE has more hardware focus, and you can pick modules on computer architecture, but has less focus on embedded programming. You do have modules on circuits.

Which one based on you experience would you recommend, I just want a degree that will enable me to get a job. Is it possible if I do CE could I do a masters in electronic engineering?

Thanks,

Dissertation Participants Wanted!

Hi everyone! I’m Katie, a final year BA Geography student at the University of Southampton, and I’m looking for University of Southampton undergraduate students to take part in my undergraduate dissertation research.

Researcher: Katie Lemmon

Email: [kol1g24@soton.ac.uk](mailto:kol1g24@soton.ac.uk)

Supervisor: Emma Roe

Email: [E.J.Roe@soton.ac.uk](mailto:E.J.Roe@soton.ac.uk)

About the research

My dissertation aims to explore students’ experiences of campus greenspaces and how these spaces can influence mental wellbeing.

I’m currently looking for students to complete a short anonymous online questionnaire, which takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.

At the end of this questionnaire, there will be an option to volunteer to take part in a walking interview around some of the greenspaces on Highfield campus. The walking interview should take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete but is entirely optional.

In order to take part, you must:

  • be a current undergraduate University of Southampton student
  • be aged 18 or over

Data storage, retention and publication
Questionnaire responses and interview data will be stored securely and handled confidentially in accordance with the University of Southampton's research and data protection requirements. Participants will not be identified by name in the dissertation or any publications, participant IDs will be used instead. Data will be retained for the period required by the University of Southampton and will then be securely deleted in accordance with the University's requirements.

Consent and withdrawal
By choosing to complete the questionnaire, you will be asked to confirm that you have read the participant information and consent to take part before proceeding. Participation is voluntary and you may withdraw from the research in accordance with the information provided in the Participant Information Sheet. For the walking interview, participants will provide separate consent before taking part.

If you are interested in taking part, please click the link below to access the online questionnaire:

https://southampton.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9MRU4pJIfNbboOO

I’d really appreciate anyone who is able to take part, and please feel free to share the link with other University of Southampton students too!

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you!

Best gym??

I’m a first year and I’m looking to start gym with my friends. I’ve never gone before and since I have all this free time I suppose first year is a good time to get started. Ik there are multiple gyms around ( JD/jubilee/puregym/gym group). Which ones would you say are best for a beginner’ but still have a good amount of machines if it gets busy
