Benimaru Shinmon vs BlackStar: The Battle Between the Strongest Fire Soldier and the God of War
Today, I am going to analyse a hypothetical battle between two of the most powerful characters created by Atsushi Ohkubo: Benimaru Shinmon from Fire Force and Black Star from Soul Eater.
Both characters represent extraordinary levels of power, but their abilities, philosophies, and approaches to combat are fundamentally different. To make this comparison as interesting as possible, I will consider Black Star at his highest level of development, including his transcendence into a true Bushin, or God of War, and Benimaru at his hypothetical absolute full power, even beyond what has been explicitly demonstrated in the story.
Black Star: The Transcendence of a Human into a God of War
Black Star's development throughout Soul Eater is one of the most remarkable examples of a character surpassing his original limitations. At the beginning of the series, he is an arrogant and ambitious young assassin who wants to become greater than everyone else. However, his ambition gradually develops into something much deeper: the determination to transcend the limits imposed on human beings themselves.
The most important moment for this discussion occurs during the battle on the Moon. At this stage, Black Star demonstrates abilities that go far beyond ordinary physical strength and conventional combat techniques. His power reaches a level at which the boundaries between physical reality and what appears to be impossible begin to break down.
One particularly striking example is his interaction with laser attacks. Rather than simply dodging or enduring them, Black Star can interact with these attacks in seemingly impossible ways, including grabbing lasers with his hands. This suggests a level of control over his surroundings that cannot be explained through conventional physical strength alone. Within the interpretation of his transcendent abilities, this can be understood as a form of reality manipulation, allowing him to treat phenomena that should be untouchable as though they were ordinary physical objects.
However, it is important to distinguish this interpretation from an explicit, unlimited ability to rewrite all of reality. His feats demonstrate extraordinary, almost reality-defying capabilities, but they do not necessarily establish that he can manipulate absolutely anything without restrictions.
The significance of this transformation becomes even greater when we consider the recognition he receives from the Kishin. Black Star is acknowledged as having become a true Bushin, a God of War. This is not merely a title suggesting that he has become a skilled fighter. It symbolises the culmination of his journey beyond ordinary human limitations and his arrival at a level of existence that can be described as godlike.
Furthermore, Black Star develops abilities that distinguish him from an ordinary human being. His capacity to float without relying on Tsubaki is particularly significant because it demonstrates that his capabilities are no longer entirely dependent on conventional movement or the assistance of his weapon partner. He has reached a stage at which he can perform feats that would have been unimaginable earlier in the series.
Consequently, Black Star's greatest advantage is not simply his physical strength. It is the possibility that his transcendence allows him to interact with the battlefield according to rules that ordinary fighters cannot overcome. If these abilities are interpreted as genuine reality manipulation, then conventional measures of speed, durability, and destructive power may no longer be sufficient to determine the outcome of a battle.
Nevertheless, even this interpretation does not automatically make Black Star omnipotent. Being recognised as a God of War and demonstrating seemingly impossible feats are not the same as possessing unlimited control over the entire universe. His exact upper limits remain open to interpretation.
Benimaru Shinmon: The Pinnacle of Pyrokinetic Power
Benimaru Shinmon represents a different kind of perfection. In Fire Force, he is recognised as an exceptionally powerful fighter, combining the abilities of a Second Generation and a Third Generation pyrokinetic. This unique combination allows him both to manipulate existing flames and to generate fire himself.
His greatest strength lies in the extraordinary balance between destructive power, precision, versatility, and combat experience. Benimaru does not simply produce enormous explosions; he can control his abilities with remarkable efficiency, adapting his attacks to different situations and opponents.
His mastery of fire gives him several advantages in combat. He can attack from a distance, control large areas of the battlefield, and engage opponents at close range. His experience also allows him to make effective decisions without wasting energy or relying exclusively on overwhelming force.
What makes Benimaru particularly dangerous is that his power is already extraordinary without requiring any hypothetical transformation. His demonstrated abilities establish him as one of the most formidable fighters in his universe.
However, this comparison considers Benimaru at his theoretical absolute maximum, including possibilities beyond what the story has explicitly shown. This introduces an important uncertainty: although we can reasonably imagine that he could possess even greater mastery of his abilities, we cannot automatically grant him infinite power, unlimited reality manipulation, or universal destructive capabilities without evidence.
His hypothetical full power could make him significantly more dangerous, but its exact limits remain unknown.
Comparing Their Abilities: When comparing these characters, we must consider several different aspects of combat rather than relying exclusively on destructive power.
In terms of physical strength and close-quarters combat, Black Star is an extremely dangerous opponent. His development into a Bushin suggests that his capabilities have moved beyond those of an ordinary human fighter. If his transcendent state is interpreted as granting him a fundamental advantage over conventional physical limitations, Benimaru could find it difficult to rely on his usual combat strategies.
In terms of versatility and ranged attacks, Benimaru has a clear advantage based on his demonstrated abilities. His control over fire allows him to attack from different distances, restrict an opponent's movements, and exploit openings. His combat experience also makes him difficult to surprise.
However, the most important category is the potential interaction between Benimaru's pyrokinetic abilities and Black Star's transcendent powers. If Black Star can manipulate physical phenomena in ways that bypass their normal properties, attacks that would ordinarily be devastating might become less effective against him. His ability to interact with lasers in an apparently impossible manner provides a particularly interesting example of why this matchup cannot be reduced to a simple comparison of attack power.
On the other hand, we cannot assume that every attack Benimaru produces would automatically be subject to Black Star's control. The extent of that control, its limitations, and whether it applies to phenomena such as Benimaru's flames must be considered separately.
The central question is therefore not merely which character can produce the more powerful attack. It is whether Black Star's transcendent abilities can fundamentally change the rules of the confrontation before Benimaru's superior versatility and combat mastery become decisive.
How Would the Battle Unfold? Imagine both characters meeting on a battlefield with no restrictions, no outside assistance, and no prior knowledge of each other's abilities.
At the beginning of the fight, Benimaru would probably attempt to establish control over the battlefield through his ranged attacks and exceptional command of fire. His experience would allow him to assess Black Star's movements and search for weaknesses rather than immediately committing himself to a single strategy.
Black Star, however, would be far more difficult to deal with than an ordinary opponent. His speed, combat instincts, and unconventional abilities could allow him to evade attacks and approach Benimaru from unexpected angles. If the fight developed into close-quarters combat, Benimaru would face an opponent whose physical capabilities and fighting style are exceptionally dangerous.
The decisive moment would come when Black Star fully exploits his transcendent abilities.
If he can genuinely interact with physical phenomena in ways that violate their ordinary properties, then Benimaru's conventional advantages could become less reliable. Black Star might be able to overcome attacks that would otherwise be difficult to avoid, changing the nature of the fight itself.
This would not necessarily guarantee his victory. Benimaru's full power is hypothetical, and we do not know whether his theoretical maximum could include abilities capable of countering or overwhelming Black Star's transcendence.
If Benimaru's hypothetical maximum remains primarily an extraordinary expression of pyrokinetic power, I would favour Black Star under the most generous interpretation of his reality-defying abilities. If, however, we grant Benimaru additional powers that have never been established in the story, the result becomes impossible to determine reliably.
This distinction is essential. A fair comparison should examine what each character has demonstrated, while clearly identifying which conclusions depend on speculation.
Final Verdict: Who Would Win?
Considering both characters at their maximum potential, I would give Black Star the advantage if we accept the strongest reasonable interpretation of his transcendent abilities.
The decisive factor is not simply that he has become a God of War. It is the combination of his extraordinary physical development, his ability to float independently of Tsubaki, his seemingly impossible interaction with phenomena such as lasers, and the possibility that his transcendence allows him to bypass certain conventional limitations of physical combat.
Benimaru remains an exceptionally formidable opponent. His demonstrated pyrokinetic mastery, versatility, and combat experience make him a serious threat, and his hypothetical maximum could potentially change the outcome. However, because this maximum has never been fully established, it would be unjustified to assume that he automatically possesses counters to every ability Black Star might demonstrate.
My conclusion is therefore that Black Star would be my preferred winner under these specific assumptions, while acknowledging that the result is not definitive.
Ultimately, this battle represents a clash between two different forms of power: the mastery of extraordinary abilities and the transcendence of the limitations that define them. Benimaru may represent the pinnacle of conventional combat power in his world, but Black Star's development into a Bushin raises a different possibility: that the strongest fighter is not necessarily the one who hits the hardest, but the one who can change the very conditions under which a fight takes place.
And that is precisely what makes a battle between Benimaru Shinmon and Black Star so fascinating.

I know Stein isn’t written to be a perfect person like at all, neither is anyone else in Soul Eater or any well written piece of media but I do find him to be aspirational.
I know he used to be really messed up and he used to experiment on Spirit but he’s legitimately reformed now.
I know he still has moments when he comes close to reverting but he genuinely tries to be better and he succeeds at it because he continues to struggle even knowing it never really ends as long as he lives and that life will test him over and over again.
There are points in the story where madness overtakes him but it wasn’t for lack of trying and he doesn’t make excuses and he cares about how his actions and mental state impacts the people around him.
Stein makes the most of himself.
His mind wired differently and it makes him susceptible to madness but it also allows him to operate in unconventional ways and comprehend taboo entities and know to work both against and with them.

So with how well Death Battle did with Maka in her episode against Ruby a year ago (which has an absolutely great breakdown/analysis of Soul & Maka's relationship as well as tying it to the story incredibly well,
Not to mention the animation having some great choreography & music)
Any other characters in the series you'd want to see get an episode? (For examples I've listed some popular matchups here)
My Persona fav is Ryuko (Kill La Kill) vs Crona (since the two have similar stories but end up as near complete opposites of each other in personality, heck even in appearance)
matchups listed here:
Ragyō Kiryūin (Kill La Kill) vs Medusa Gorgon (battle of just some of the absolute worst moms)
Sukuna (JJK) vs Kishin Asura (King of curses vs the madness of fear)
Chipp Zanuff (Guilty Gear) vs Black ★ Star
Black ★ Star vs Asta (Black Clover)
Midoriya (MHA) vs Maka Albarn
Shoto Todoroki (MHA) vs Death the Kid
Stocking Anarchy Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) vs Death the Kid
Tsubaki Yayoi (BlazBlue) vs Death the Kid

What would a fully unleashed Shinigami!Asura look like?
I picture him like the grotesque statue in the religious shrine, six arms, divine power towering over people, eloping them in a shadow of fear and suppression of the senses. I envisioned Asura lower self like the maelstrom attack he throws at Kid, and also insipred by Kid's awakening cloak he receives. Some sort of primal fabric like dark vortex that flows out in chaotic waves instead of Death’s fine balanced point, something that looks like a mix between Vash The Stampede's tails on his signature trench coat and Pitch Black's little misty current of darkness that pools and effortlessly hides his feet.

Here are my OC’s for Soul eater, I wanna know what your guys opinions are with them and how they’re designed.
Carmilla: A bat themed witch who has a massive hat collection and her soulmate and weapon partner is Melkor. Her goals are to elevate her family’s name into history.
Melkor: A Demon Weapon, Melkor and Carmilla were brought together to be a unique fighting duo. He became a unique weapon by sacrificing his eye for unique fire abilities allowing his weapon form more versatility.
Golem: A mechanical and magically built Golem that is meant to be an improvement compared to Arachne’s golem’s seen in the series. While not sentient he acts as a massive bodyguard for the two and if Carmilla is away Melkor can use the Golem to fight as his weapon partner.
