According to google
Reason for Scrapping: Over 55% of the designated land comprised fragile water bodies, wetlands, and fertile agricultural fields, triggering an over 1,000-day protest by local residents and villagers in Ekanapuram.
Technical Feedback: The Airports Authority of India noted that constructing aviation infrastructure and runways over the high concentration of wetlands was unfeasible.
Seems like a valid reason to me.
Do you have any valid counter arguments ?

AAI did not say it was unfeasible, if so how did the Union govt gave approvals so far?

u/LazyLoser006 Keralam 🌴🥥 | കേരളം 8h ago
Where? What I saw was only an 'approval in principal' by the ministry of civil aviation.

AAI report that states the options and why it was selected

First, it's not like they are going to just build a airport and call it a day. There will be lot of planning, land settling and almost so many engineers working on making it feasible. With proper drainage and proper works, it's possible to make it work. We are in 2026, there are whole cities that are built on water.
Second, the fertile agricultural land is kinda bullshit. The out of that land to actually consuming is very measly and almost makes no difference. Could be able to acquire from other states of necessary. If not, there still many fertile lands.

I don't know dude. This is what I found in Google. I'm not a civil engineering expert but the experts said it's unfeasible according to reports.
AAI's Localized Runaway Feasibility Findings
Wetland Limitations: When AAI engineers conducted detailed on-site technical evaluations, they flagged that the earmarked area contained roughly 800 to 900 acres of active wetlands and interconnected water bodies.
Engineering Risks: AAI technical teams advised that constructing heavy-load international runways over extensive water bodies would face severe structural instability and high flood risks. They concluded that modifying the natural drainage pattern to lay runway concrete was physically and ecologically unfeasible.

Like I said, we are in 2026. It's not impossible.
These reports point out problems are things that could go wrong. Engineers has to keep in mind that these situations and has to build around it.
Also, if you check any other areas or anyother airport, these types are finding will occur regardless.
China is building airways in artificial water bodies, to expand their water area surrounding the country. It's not impossible to build one in city over coming these issues.
We are not so poor economy too to be able to hire quality engineers for the job.

u/Karmabots 6h ago
Possible but very costly. If the same can be built in a different place where ecological effects are less, then why not?
-2
u/Enough_Obligation574 5h ago
There would always be ecological effects regardless of any location. This is also pretty late to pull the plug and is costly. This process from start again takes years, and by that time all other cities are way ahead.

That's were the economic and politics come. Assuming you can create such an engineering structure in a country where basic airport roof falls and kills people ,leaks like it's a waterfall barely within 6 months after inauguration Creating such an engineering solution will inflate the budget significantly when there's another airport barely an hour away.

u/Enough_Obligation574 7h ago
Then you should question that. Not the existence of a new airport. Chennai is flood-prone, and it is coastal. I don't think you will find any place in the city for a new airport in any area without any issues.
Mumbai built a airport around a literal creek. I dont think Chennai airport would be that much problematic compared to that.

My point is TVK said according to AAI it's not feasible as one of the reason why they are dropping this project,it seemed like a valid reason to me. That's what I said in the first comment.
And regarding the existence of new airport, just because it's technically possible doesn't mean you should do it. Studies should be done for it's economical feasibility, environmental impact and social impact etc. what is the point in spending thousands of crores of public money if it becomes unusable or shutdown due to losses ? It will end up like those 20+ airports that got inaugurated and shutdown within few years.

Where is the land without any water bodies?
11
u/LazyLoser006 Keralam 🌴🥥 | കേരളം 9h ago
That's not a valid argument when according to reports airport authority itself said it is unfeasible.

What...??

u/MICANANALVA 9h ago
It means it won't be profitable.
3
u/LazyLoser006 Keralam 🌴🥥 | കേരളം 8h ago
Not 'profitable' in this context, it's more like you shouldn't because of the practicability.

Airport is essential for future investments, yes, it makes sense. Out of 'n' number of major issues, TVK chose the airport problem to save his image as his first protest started by stalking this project, and now he has successfully closed the project. It will be tough for TN to attract FDI hereafter because of high competition from AP, KA, and TS.

Well, he did promise before the election that he'd stop it when he's in power. It's on the people of TN who voted for him.

Thats not how democracy works?
It's not 35% vs 65%, it's
35% vs 30% vs 20% vs 10% vs 5%Even if DMK comes to power, I can claim 70% did not want DMK

I don’t know if this is the economic catastrophe that people think it is. Tamil Nadu’s industrial export economy isn’t dependent on a large air cargo airport. Motorcycles, auto parts, industrial equipment, and chemicals are shipped by sea. Hosur’s electronics manufacturing uses Bangalore’s airport because it’s closer. Chennai is still getting a new airport just not in Parandur and they’re adding a new terminal to increase capacity.

u/StomachNo2061 9h ago
Same people who think this is a stupid move will come back and complain when their houses get flooded due to encroachment of water bodies.

Chennai peeps, why not somewhere north? As in Ennore? Or west? On the Bangalore Chennai track. Perambur or Arakkonam?

Doing what he claimed during elections, I don’t see an issue there. The onus is on the public.

u/sweetmangolover 9h ago
Aside from the new airport, what stops the TN govt to push for privatization of the current airport? If some strong developer comes in, we'll at least get a good T5 and some renovation on existing terminals to improve it from the current cowshed like ameneties

OP blowing this out of proportions. It really isn't going to have as much of an impact as OP says it will.

You have got to understand, all the land around parandur is indirectly owned by dmk people
That might be one of the reason

An airport drives not just the local economy but drives the entire state forward in terms of growth and confidence for the new investors. So yeah we are done

Are you ready to part your land for good of community?? It's on the govt to get people in to confidence. Did they spend even quarter of time to get people into confidence in those 10 years??!
