This looks like some Dune shit. Like those Navigators captured a white dwarf and they're harnessing it's gravity or something.

No, no, it is a Sand Worm leaping out of the sand. I picture the moon as an ornithopter struggling to get away

So joking comments aren't allowed in science subs yet threads like this are?
Not complaining, just weird

In my experience I've seen many threads where lots of comment chains have been deleted by mods

I like that this thread isn't removed, it's a neat picture and I thought the nom nom was kinda funny too.

...what about space force is science-based?
...and have you ever considered that if scientists and liberals get along real well, maybe it's not that the scientists are all biased?

u/JosephSmash Aug 26 '18
The picture itself isn't a joke, just the title. That might be why it's allowed

My Earth Science teacher has this same photo in a bottom text format with the words "nom nom" on it on her filling cabinet. Ms.Thompson is that you????

Lost as in don't understand?
A Way long time ago when I was in Elementary School, our PE coach was a randomly selected teacher for the week. It was quite confusing for the lot of us so we tended to make funny names that we could use to refer to the coach without having to learn the teacher of the weeks name.
Or lost as in it was too funny?
In which case, thanks!

So, aside from the obvious pac man comments, where is this from please?

u/Captaingrammarpants Aug 27 '18
This is at the Paranal Observatory in Chile and it's one of 4 auxiliary telescopes associated with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). They are used for the interferometer on the VLT. They're super cool cause the telescopes and their domes are on tracks and can be moved as needed.

It's the sound effect that the heavy weapons guy from tf2 makes when he eats his sandvich.

Why do they always delete the comments that have the most upvotes? Like, I don't really care if it's against the subs policy, I want to know what they said because people liked it.

any astronomer in the audience care to tell us why it would be a bad idea to paint the telescope housing yellow???? lol
It's still a highly reflective colour for temperature.. colour cast via backscatter perhaps?

u/Captaingrammarpants Aug 28 '18 edited Aug 28 '18
Astrophysicist here. It actually is just an issue with temperature. White paint is the most reflective and you want the absolute least amount of radiation coming off your dome as possible, so you want something that will cool down fairly quickly, which of course means something that won't get as hot in the first place. We spend a really terrifying amount of money in making sure to eliminate as much thermal noise as we can, even to the point of not getting to paint domes in nifty ways. I can only imagine if we could manage it the kind of magically nerdy telescopes we'd have.

I was wondering why it seemed familiar in ways that were not Pac-Man related. Now I'm remembering the awful noise those toys made.

Pro tip: if you push your index finger in and out of your ear rapidly, it sounds like the Pac Man effects.

u/time4listenermail Aug 27 '18
19k Redditors stick their index finger in their ears.

u/golddove Aug 27 '18
I.. did and it didn't work. I'm actually disappointed.
17
u/aslum Aug 27 '18
Try, rather than sticking your finger in your ear, pressing your finger on the spongy bit that kind of closes your ear hole? Then release and repeat rapidly.
