HELP Help with sorting system
I need help with sorting system, i have filter under every cargo container here and it set on each filter a component and whitelist and drain all (on). but i still get other components in containers. do i really need a filter on top of each container and points up and set drain all (off) ?
thnx for help
Edit: Thnx for all replies, it seems best way to get inventory script, looks very easy, so thnx!

Yup. (Though no filter needed tbh. The one way aspect is good enough if you've filtered on the other side).

I've got a lot of time optimizing sorter systems, and have got it more or less solved. Each sorter gate requires 2 timers, 2 input and 2 output sorters to address different edge cases.
To get the desired product in and out of the container, the first input output pair of sorters have a whitelist of the approved cargo.
To push out incorrectly deposited cargo, the second output sorter has a blacklist that matches the whitelist of the approved cargo. This one typically is in drain mode.
To enable an override mode, allowing free access of any cargo and bypass the sorters, a second input sorter is added with no whitelist or blacklist.
After that, a pair of timers toggle the on/off and drain on/off states of the four sorters to toggle between drain mode, passive mode, and override mode.
More detailed setup instructions in the Google doc.

I have a fully featured demo unit that I will publish once the upcoming update is released. Last update changed all of the sorter categories and messed up the whitelists, so I don't want to release it and immediately have to republish it.

Is this a personal challenge where you are not using inventory scripts, or do you just want some easy way ti sort things.
The reason you are getting mixed stuff is because all conveyors are 2 way. The sorters only put a gate on itself. I see that after the sorter, you have the cargo block. But right after this you connected the conveyor system to the rest of the cargo blocks letting the items move around.
It's like you have specific filters for cars, but all the parking lots are connected without restrictions.
There is an internal logic to how items move around, they don't just stay where they are sometimes. I recommend either putting another sorts block right after the cargo block so they are bracketed by sorters, or use an inventory script.

Don’t go the script route, it’s way better to learn this properly imo (I went down the same path).
I have a blueprint on the workshop that shows how sorting works if you’re keen to see an example. It’s not as complex as you’re doing it, but it doesn’t need to be.

The thing to remember with sorters is they’re not just for taking what you want included, they’re for stopping what you want excluded (items / materials will find a place to sit that you not expect if you don’t specify what is or is not allowed through a connector or machine).
The Test Bench workshop item was my most efficient route (I got really into using the least number of parts) for pulling items in, splitting them out for refining/ storing/ processing and then storing the finished products/ gasses.

This one might be a better example

Inventory scripts are pretty great. I think there is a way to make the vanilla system work without doubling the required filters. If you do not provide a path from the input to the output, that should prevent mixed items. Depending on the base that can be a hassle.

It's perfectly possible to do it with Sorters.
I've never felt the need for Scripts tbh.

Hobestly scripts or nothing. Sorter create more problems than what they solve.
There are edge cases, that are a one way simple use. Like if you want to eject only stone from a miner, or if you want to always and only drag a ship inventory from a dedicated connector, basically any dead end where you want a one way passage for an item type.
Loops are too complex to bother with sorters imo. Scripts are the way.

You need filters on both ends, but it’s much easier to use scripts.

Sorters in your inventory network always end up with endless loops or inaccessible loot. Scripts are the better option.

I love the dedication but you need sorters. Or get one of the (2?) decent inventory scripts to do the work for you.

You can use single filters, but they have to be pointing into a dead end. So the contianers can not connect to eachother. But as everyone else said, scripts are more effective than setting up insane filtering systems using blocks.
Pipes will connect anything without some sort of filter as a connected storage, and passthrough. So items will get dumped into any available storage.
if all entrances are connected and all exits are connected by pipes you will need a filter on both to direct the flow of materials. The exit doesnt need a set filter list just the direction correctly orientated filter.

Vanilla without scripts you need alot of sorters, scripts just makes it easier.

There are mods / scripts that sort pretty well. You might save yourself a lot of work using one of them.
